Man inside Brighton apartment building shoots one in chest, now shooting at cops

UPDATE, 5:40 p.m. Randy Moore, is scheduled for arraignment tomorrow on murder charges in Brighton District Court, the Suffolk County DA's office says. The neighbor he allegedly shot to death was 70, used a wheelchair.

UPDATE, 12:53 p.m.: Suspect reported in custody.

17 Ledgemere Rd., opposite Chestnut Hill Avenue. SWAT team, negotiator, additional officers from across the city on the way. The man periodically comes out of his apartment and fires shots. One victim, shot in the chest, is inside the building.

Chestnut Hill Avenue is shut between Chiswick and Jackson.

The building is part of the John J. Carroll Apartments, a BHA complex of garden-style apartments aimed at elderly and disabled residents. The MBTA sent in a bus to help evacuate residents.

I'm on the 57 now, the cops are going nuts. It looks like every patrol car in allston / brighton is speeding there, under covers, bpd, and a few staties

My old apt was right across the street from Ledgemere. Occasionally some interesting stuff happened over there. The location is between the firehouse and Wallingford opposite 99 Chestnut Hill Ave.

Was it in JP? Is someone angry about whole foods? Google Maps has ruined local geography with these made up locations.

Has the right location. Sounds like some folks saw "Jackson Square" and assumed Google knows what it's mapping about.

That's Right Near The Firehouse, No?

It is indeed. The building is part of a retirement community complex.

You are assuming they had jobs in the first place. It is public housing for the elderly.

The globe article now also says "the bulk" of residences on Ledgemere are part of the John J Carroll housing project. Actually, "all" of the recidences on Ledgemere are. Just noticed you can see my 4runner on street view right there.

I know he has the "right" location. No one on earth has ever called that the "Jackson Square" neighborhood. I was both knocking google maps for these made up places and the Globe writers for not knowing Boston. That area is still Brighton Center. You can see the Brighton Center police station from there (looking down winship).

...I used to live near there and NEVER heard any reference to a "Jackson Square", despite it being labeled that way on the map.

I guess it's the "Newstead Montegrade" of Brighton

Google Maps isn't making this stuff up, although it took me a second to confirm it.

That little patch of grass has been known as Jackson square since at least 1899: http://www.wardmaps.com/viewasset.php?aid=8201#
And that area is Aberdeen as well, not the other side of Comm Ave.

William Jackson Ave is also very near to there, and the parcel of land the Brighton courthouse is on now used to be a larger plot of land, owned by Nathaniel Jackson.

It was called Jackson Square, but it is no longer. It has since been renamed after a war vet (if I still lived there I would look it up), and it is also a war memorial now. If you look at old Bromley maps, there was a fountain there too, how cool.

Either way, it is not the "Jackson Square Neighborhood (or area)" as the glob points out.

The area I guess is technically Aberdeen as it is part of the original Aberdeen street naming convention, but it is not what I would consider part of the current Aberdeen neighborhood. Back then it was called the "New Aberdeen Section"

Google maps has a tendency to over do it with the park naming lately. It named my back yard as "Hawthorne/Suan Street". My actual property is included in the area labeled as a park.

It' a Boston Housing Authority elderly/disabled housing complex. It's pretty small - a number of 2 story buildings with apartments. I did home visits there years ago

Yeah, this is about a mile down CH ave. from where I live. Nice.

The guy has apparently already demonstrated that he has little or no regard for human life, so there is no reason to negotiate. That should mean that the next time this guy comes out to shoot at the cops, a State Police sharpshooter will put two in his head and end this nonsense, but somehow, I think the directive will still be to try and negotiate.

This is happening literally right behind my house on Wallingford, good thing I'm at work. I can see all of these apartments from the window in my room, they've always sketched me out...

Sorry to hear that...I used to live a few hundred yards from there until I left for the quieter environs of Brookline on the other side of Cleveland Circle.

It will be interesting to hear the motive behind this. The particularly disturbing thing is the reports that there was a "cache" of weapons. That sounds like one death was not the only objective.

By the way, I thought this was the "Aberdeen" section of Brighton - substantiated by a neighborhood association of the same name? Is that no longer the case?

With all the windy narrow roads. My grandfather hated that nighborhood because they couldnt get fire trucks through the streets.

In the Kinross/Kilsyth area. I thought that might be the case. Thanks.

in MA, this means 1 or 2, if you have 3 or more, I'm sure they call it an "arsenal" or "WMDs"

So the news is now reporting. I thought we had some rules about that sort of thing?

If I had to make a (reckless) guess from my experience with disabled in public houses it would be the Oxy driven drug trade. Massachusetts has an issue with folks who are addicted to Oxycontin Dr. shopping for disability (particularly in the public health centers)and then, in turn, dealing their oxy for heroin as their morphine needs heighten. This has become an increasing issues in disability public housing, and could likely be the cause here (particularly with the "cache" of weapons note).

I heard that CH 7 news stated that "Boston Police and Brighton Police are on scene but that Boston Police was in charge" Huh??? Maybe they meant Boston Housing Authority Police because last time I checked Brighton was part of Boston and didn't have their on Police Department

Ch. 7 also reported that the shooting victim did not have life-threatening injuries, but the Globe says he has died.

Any time you are shot in the chest, it is life threatening.

Channel 7 always says ridiculous things like that. When the Whitey Bulger capture thing was happening, they said he was from "the city of South Boston". They never let the facts get in the way of their reporting.

It sounds like it was a mad scene and all within a few thousand feet of my apartment. I don't know if I'm happy that I'm at work when it went down or sad that I couldn't go get pictures of the scene.

It's a shame that the victim died. I wonder if the 50 year old was sent on a "mission" from the Great Godfather or whatever Russian senior citizen mafioso have for a head of the family.
