Man stabbed to death in parking lot of Jamaica Plain 7-Eleven

UPDATE: Arrest made: Hector Soto of Roslindale.
Boston Police report a 19-year-old man was stabbed around 4:20 a.m. in the parking lot of the 7-Eleven at the intersection of Centre Street and S. Huntington Avenue. The victim was taken to Brigham and Women's Hospital, where he died of his injuries.
Police declined to identify him, but friends on Twitter and Facebook identified him as Kenny "Black" Soto.

given that a convenience store clerk was murdered a mile or so further down Centre Street in 2009.

I updated the post several times during the day. Initially, all I knew was that somebody was stabbed in the parking lot - didn't know who or even that he had died. That's when EM asked about the clerks - because, at that point, most of us didn't know.
No he's right
I see his or her point, the guys who work there are nice though, and it looks like a dangerous job, there are always panhandlers hanging out in the parking lot all night. I like the workers better than the hangers out, what can I say.

no more patch
This is near my house and I was in a prep class all day--got the Patch notification about it during class, and all there was was a link to this post, no other information. Very worrying.
I'm actually going to unsubscribe from Patch over this. It was pretty upsetting to get "news" with so little news attached, no followup, no way to learn more. I come to UH voluntarily--but an alert comes to me. It's not the first alarmist, no-info alert I have gotten from them. I'd rather not get any.

There is no such thing as Canary Square
It is an invention of a handful of residents who conveniently ignore the Welcome to Hyde Square sign right in front of the 7-11 in the block that they call Canary Square (so named because someone noticed a small memorial to William Canary.) Canary Square is a nice restaurant/bar but we should stop making up place names just because some people don't want to be identified as living in Hyde Square. Otherwise we should consider renaming all the other street corners in JP that have similar memorials (http://rememberjamaicaplain.blogspot.com/2008/09/j...).

R.I.P kenny "black" Soto it was great spending those years in high school with you I wish we would of known each other closely but you were a great down to earth person I would never thought u would lv this earth like this but u will be forever missed!!! Inquiring Minds
While we are all no doubt very regretful that a young man has lost his life - and I extend heartfelt sympathy to his family - what I imagine the community wants to know asap is: Is this related to the Mozart Street gang problem? And why does it still exist?
Further, why has the community not responded with outrage and REAL DEMANDS OF THE POLICE DEPARTMENT FOR A COMMUNITY AGREEMENT over violent crime beyond a few paltry, poorly attended, "peace marches?" We sure can get people fired up about grocery stores. Why not violent crime?

it couldnt have been gang related since he was not involved in those type of deals, as for the mozart and other wars really needs to stop.. all of that should be in the past. walking through his house all you hear is his mothere screaming in pain of losing her kid. he was a good guy, and its a shame he had to go that way.

What is a "community agreement over violent crime"? Is that getting the violent criminals to agree not to do it any more? Getting the police to agree to try to find or deter the violent criminals? (They already work on that.) To have citizen patrols in neighborhoods with violent crime?

It is so sad that black is gone. He was good guy with the up most respect. My heart goes out to his family and friends. He will truley be missed. What ever happened to throwing your hands up at least you get to live to fight another day. Im just lost for words. I hope the police get to the bottom of this ... we miss you black.

Lost a very good Kid
This violence is out of control...i swear this world is coming to an end, it hurts to know that Kenny is gone and the way he left hurts evern more.I dont know what gave this murderer the right to feel that its ok to take someones life, that coward why doesnt he give his face and face the wrong that he did! i wish he can read this so he can think of what he did and see the damage he did to his family and friends. Justice must be done here, because if its not then things like this will just keep on happening.
Kenny Soto
Kenny played Regan League baseball right down the street at Jefferson. His playing time was limited, but he loved the game and never complained. He was always cheerful, full of fun, and was the life of the bench on his team. His teammates loved and appreciated him. He was the kind of kid who made coaching worth it. We're glad for the happiness the games and camaraderie gave him in his short life that has now been so pointlessly taken from him.

JT summed up Kenny's contributions to the Regan League perfectly. Kenny's Regan League teammates are holding a baseball game in his honor tonight (Friday) at 7pm at Jefferson Field.
Why?
Do they have the motive for the crime or a suspect? From the board it sounds like a random act of violence and if so I am especially more concerned. I am a recent resident of JP, are random acts of violence common?

Sorry that a young man of color lost his life. The "rise in crime" isn't caused by young people's desire to kill others. Crime increase in JP is the result of gentrification. Rich, white, elitists have moved into JP. Housing prices have skyrocketed. Local businesses that may have once employed a young man from the area are now run by corporations who only hire white, upwardly mobile, affluent people. As affordable housing stock falls and job opportunities diminish for poor and working middle class (of every race), the wealthy white folk sleep soundly in their multimillion dollar homes without a care in the world for the suffering they have imposed upon JP. Young people who are poor and working class peopl who cannot survive would do well to send a clear message to those upper class, rich white folk that they need to be afraid. It's time to transfer wealth by whatever means necessary. Stop mourning the loss of a young man of color and let's rejoice in the future suffering of rich, white folks who create the problems in JP.
