The Herald reports on the looming battle royale between Tom Menino, who wants a casino at Suffolk Downs, and Robert Kraft, who wants a casino next to his football stadium/mall in Foxboro.
I really hope that it goes to Suffolk Downs. Between Menino, The Citizens of Revere, and DeLeo.. Kraft doesnt stand a chance. The news also said that the parking lot where this said casino would be will border a residential community in Walpole, so they'd have to approve it too.
there's already too much going on near Gillette. Ever try to drive down 495 or US 1 when there's a game AND a concert at the Comcast center?.. forget it. its gridlock. Throw in a Casino and it would be just awful.
It'd take some serious pocket lining to allow a casino to be built here. Foxboro already is hesitant to any further expansion of Patriot Place (because it gets enough tax revenue from it already..)
I'm not saying the traffic would be much better at Suffolk Downs, however, its near a subway station, verses Gillette which has seasonal commuter service. Plus Suffolk Downs is near the airport. A Casino near Gillette isn't near anything except 495, and Gillette. It just makes logical sense to put it at Suffolk.
However, you're forgetting one thing. These two casinos were the first in New England. So that was the draw it itself. The ones in MA need to have some sort of draw or easy access. I just don't see that at Foxboro.
I think my point about the traffic of a gameday and a concert day is this. You'll now have a 24 hour, 365 steady flow of people to that casino at Foxboro. Add a patriots game. And/Or Christmas Time (shopping). And/Or a concert at the Comcast center. It'll be total gridlock almost all the time. That area already sucks as is..
Despite the efforts of several legislators to amend the legislation to give neighboring communities a voice in the citing of casinos, the law that was passed deliberately left the yes-or-no ONLY to the community in which the casino wishes to build. Thus, while the proposed site in Milford sits on the Holliston line (and an aquifer which supplies Holliston) and very close to the Hopkinton line, neither community would be allowed any say over whether that project can be developed. Similarly, while the proposed Foxborough site is within eyesight of a South Walpole development, that community will also be shut out.
its called a lawsuit.. they'll sue to stop that casino from going on.
Trust me on this, its not as simple as 1-2-3, build a casino. There's going to be a ton of lawsuits if its forced into an area where it as little support for it.
Plopping the casino at Suffolk Downs is too much of a knee-jerk reaction. I actually think the SBW would the perfect place to integrate a real casino (meaning slots and table games - higher stakes allowed). The SBW has direct access to Logan and could really become a destination rather than a convention center district. Think of the casino in Monte Carlo in the heart of the city. By not placing the casino outside the city in Suffolk Downs, it will attract all walks of life from the high-brow ritzy (who either live here or are visiting on business) to the "take the bus from the retirement home" trips. It also opens up enormous potential for hosting tournaments here and boosting tourism (and revenues - studies have shown tourists shop like crazy in Boston, above the average numbers).
*This would also open up the potential for critical infrastructure improvements to handle the influx, such as the conversion of the Silver Line to Light Rail. Courthouse Station has the ability to handle much larger capacities, as it was extremely over-designed.
With Suffolk, you get people to an area that needs more life, you can build 75 story* beachfront condos, and liven up the boardwalk. And the blue line can get funded to Lynn as mitigation for traffic.
Not a chance. Menino wants to move city hall here. This is his baby of an area, he wont tarnish it with a casino. He'd rather give that luck wish to East Boston..
is a clusterfuck designed to fill the pockets of the local pols and the industry.
It's a rip off of the taxpayer and citizens to create a few temporary construction jobs and fewer, crappier casino jobs.
Image if this much effort was put into rebuilding the decaying university system. Many of the states universities need new building and infrastructure, and they pump a hell of a lot more money and resources into our economy than a casino will.
Yeah but the casinos would be paid for with mostly private money. To Fix universities and colleges would need to require tax payer money (or private grants), hence more burden on the tax payers.
I wouldn't exactly say a casino would provide crappy jobs. Yeah most folks would see a service-level job (hotel workers, housecleaning, etc) as crappy jobs, BUT.. I have a cousin who worked as a Blackjack dealer at Mohegan Sun, and he made hand over fist. He's got the personality for it, and remember, if you win big at a table, you're suppose to tip the dealer. He used to come home making 500-1000 bucks a night if he had a few big winners at his table. Thats some serious cash.
New libraries in Mattapan and Allston (and new wing in Hyde Park, even if named after Himself). Rebuilt Brighton library.
Boylston Street in the Fenway no longer just a dreary stretch of parking lots and decaying warehouses. Ditto for the South Boston waterfront (Vertex, anyone?), if still with plenty of parking lots. Yes, those are private projects, but they wouldn't have been possible without BRA (i.e., Menino) approval.
Revitalized Roslindale Square. Even public schools have gotten better.
Yeah, there's a lot to criticize, but let's not pretend absolutely nothing good has happened in Boston under his watch - and let's not forget that Robert Kraft is not exactly 100% pure mensch, either (remember the run to Hartford? The bridge over Rte. 1?).
I guess it would have been hard in the boom times to say no to everything, when money was free and easy. But so much more could have been done so much better . . .
SB Convention Center is a state project, although by report of the Herald Menino wants it named after him. Did any leader since Saddam Hussein ever name so many things after himself while in office?
Northern Avenue is a sterile corporate park on the harbor. Menino through the BRA insisted on certain architects and contractors being hired, which accounts for the strange uniformity in design. Boylston Street? That's market forces at work - the hospitals and colleges make that valuable real estate, not Menino.
Building a couple of libraries in 18 years in office is not that impressive.

What is Foxwoods near? And
What is Foxwoods near? And how often during a 365 day year do games and concerts coincide?
zip
Its near nothing. Like Mohegan sun is.

Double deck/elevate the
Double deck/elevate the highway, add a full time commuter rail stop, & maybe express bus service?
The good people of Walpole have no say about this

Put it on the waterfront

Foxboro, Walpole residents organize to fight casino

Thanks
as predicted.. :)

Competence vs. Incompetence
Kraft built a stadium and a team that won three Super Bowls.
Menino built a hack machine, fought 100 personal vendettas and dug a hole in the ground.
A tad more to the Menino legacy than just The Hole
South Boston Convention Center.
New libraries in Mattapan and Allston (and new wing in Hyde Park, even if named after Himself). Rebuilt Brighton library.
