Shuttered Mission Hill eatery could become edgy sushi place
By adamg on Fri, 01/13/2012 - 8:17am
The owners of the Ginger Exchange in Inman Square go before the Boston Licensing Board on Wednesday for permission to buy the Savant Project's beer and wine license from the bank that now owns it and turn the 1625 Tremont St. location into a sushi joint that promises to "inject a not-so-subtle element of fun and interest in the pure enjoyment of good food."

Hey memba...
Hey, remember when the last "upscale" eatery in that space closed despite getting a lot of great press and being modestly popular. "Edgy" sushi might work for a while, but the new owners may want to take a look around the neighborhood and consider a more laid-back model that will work for more than two years at a clip.
poorly run
Savant Project was incredibly poorly managed. A restaurant with more adult oversight could definitely succeed in that space.
confused
so are they planning on buying the license only, or are they planning on actually opening something in the old savant project location? or somewhere else in the mission hill area?
also, adam, you have some extra to's in that first sentence. ;)
Smart sushi!
Sorry for that, fixed the post to make it clearer: According to the application, they want to buy the license and use it at the same address (they've even set up a company called 1625 Exchange, Inc., which would be the formal owner of the license).
Other applications on Wednesday (note: some of them are not for new restaurants but for places that are changing managers or which forgot to renew their licenses).

thanks adam! dont worry, i'm about as incoherent on a friday morning as well. ;) this is exciting news...i've never been to the ginger exchange but judging by the website, it sounds like a place i'd quite enjoy. and with something like that in the mission hill area, it would be much closer to me.

I've since moved out of the city, but I had been living in Mission Hill for six months prior. There's a sushi place right down the street. What Mission Hill needs is a nice, affordable, sit-down cafe with wireless Internet that can serve the abundance of students and local residents alike. The old Savant space would be perfect for this.
ERC
Completely agree. Until September I lived on the hill for four years. A roommate of mine worked at ERC and I could never understand they wouldn't open a space in Brigham Circle. It'd flourish.
