Not news, not interesting.
With any luck, there isn't any gas left in the Outrage Machine after the McD's kerfuffle, and this silliness will just blow over.

It's at least interesting, if only to find out what people are willing to defend on these boards. Personally, I also find it interesting to see what sort of stuff advertisers and advertising agencies will apologize for, and how many complaints it takes for them to feel a need to do so.
(Just to be clear: I don't find a problem with these ads, nor did I find the McDonald's ads particularly offensive.)

As these things go, this seems pretty harmless.
Don't parents have to deal with questions like that all the time from their kids?

One of the things in a parent's job description is creative thinking on demand. As in "it is my job as a parent to interpret the world in an age appropriate way and not expect that the world will be Disneyland sanitized for my convenience".
One need only say "A booty call is like a grownup play date where grownups do grownup things like kiss each other a lot" (pause where kid makes face and says EWWWWW!) and "But it's a grownup word and I don't want you saying it, okay?".
The less you panic about the idea that humans have sex, and the more you realize that your kid will figure it out even if you put them in a box and tie their hands or never say anything and hide things from them, the better off you are with this trivial nonsense.

A kid wanted to know what one duck/mallard was doing to another.
The mother said one was giving the other one a ride.
The kid will learn the many meanings of ride. Riding horses. Riding coattails.
Ultimately the meaning the mother meant of riding will be seen to cover the actual act indeed.
Sex, procreation, impregnating. As in the spoof of Driving Miss Daisy as Riding Miss Daisy.
One schoolboy commented on the grass growing sign as being inaccurate. The grass seeds are germinating! But that might not be understood by the primary school children.
I'm old enough to remember the poor parent fielding a hypothetical question of Madonna's song. What's a virgin?
Do Catholic parents have foreboding about explaining who the Virgin Mary is, or the Virgin Birth of Jesus?
I follow Stuart Smalley's course of action to wear slippers rather than carpet the world.

I've seen these ads on the subway in NYC, and I find them strange. Is ZipCar encouraging us to have sex in its cars? And, if so, as someone who might rent the car after said booty call, do I really want to think about that possibility?
Not 100% sure

I'm going to go way out on a limb here and speculate that they are encouraging you to rent their car, drive to your paramour's lodging (or a mutually-agreed-upon central location), disembark, and have sex at your destination.

In the British vernacular, the boot of the car is what us Americans would call the trunk. The pun of the ad is that you rent a Zip Car if you need to transport more stuff than is practical without a car.
But don't let that get in the way of your filthy imaginations... ;)

Why does everything in our society need to be child-friendly?

I'm not saying there are no things that should be unsuitable for kids, but when a society makes everything kid-friendly, it loses its creative edge.
If your kid asks what's a booty call (that is, if your kid can glance up from his or your Ipad/Iphone and stop drooling on himself) then just say "its a grown up thing." Or Swirlygirl's answer above - which was perfect.

I guess its also about being sensitive in our language: we try to avoid certain words that are derisive, because it's deemed morally right. There are things that are well suited for magazine inserts, but perhaps not for public transportation.

Very telling that this girl deleted her twitter after posting that complaint.
Maybe Boston should ban 80% of TV shows, movies, magazines, newspapers, flyers, vanity plates, beer and wine menus, and anything else that might not be suitable for kids. As Swrly said, you can dance around the topic with a kid. I asked my mother what a hermaphrodite was in the 2nd grade because someone was talking about South Park on the schoolyard. Maybe that kid should have been banned from schools for life, unsuitable for kids!

I just emailed Zipcar about that offensive ad, which I saw on the blue line last week. It is disgusting; not respecting company should stoop to this offensive ad. Flood zipcar with your disapproval.
