MIT police officer shot to death at Stata Center
By adamg on Thu, 04/18/2013 - 10:53pm
UPDATE: At 12:07 a.m, Cambridge Police tweeted the officer died.
Around 10:50 p.m. at 32 Vassar St. The suspect, who fired six shots, is described as a Hispanic male in a cowboy hat, might have the officer's blood on him. The officer was rushed to Mass. General.
MIT Police warned students and staff to stay well away from the Stata Center. MBTA police are swarming the Red Line in case he tried to escape by train.

What the hell is going on around here!?
Any word on the cop' s condition yet?
This is turning out to be a particularly violet week around here - this does not bode well for when the real warm weather comes.
There have got to be many camera images of this incident too - lets hope the cops already have some good ones and nail this asshole quickly.
The officer was shot in the
The officer was shot in the left hand and belly, and is at MGH.
The suspect description may be premature; it sounds like that might have been a description of a suspect from another incident, which may or may not be related.
They are looking through security footage in the area
(source: the police scanner that we're all listening to now, because we thought it might have news about the bombing suspects)
Other incident
When they initially gave out the description for the armed robbery of the Central Square 7-Eleven (5'11", 200 lbs, light beard, black top, "bucket" hat), they said it was NOT the MIT description.
7-11
I assumed it was the Tech Square 7-11, right around the corner from the Stata Center? News is focused on the current manhunt, so not many Stats incident details out right now.
Right?
Between Monday, last night in DOT and now this. I don't ask often, but the flying spaghetti monster needs to give us a damn break already.
what's going on: police are all standing around doing nothing...
Cops in the area are either "helping" with the investigation (by sitting around with their thumbs in their asses near the site) or tied up chasing down every Hysterical Betty who sees a piece of trash and thinks it's suspicious and calls 911.
Also, warm weather = crime.
Another senseless death...
They just announced that he died of his wounds at mgh...

Sean Collier presumably killed by one of the terrorist bombers
Jesus Christ, what's with all
Jesus Christ, what's with all the shootings? Don't we have enough awful stuff with the bombing? Can't people lay off shooting each other for one week!?!?!?
Once again, The Onion nails it
And this was written before tonight's shooting...
Twitter > MIT Alert
The alertnewengland/universalhub Twitter feeds that identified the location as the Stata Center was 10 minutes faster than MIT's official feed and 17&24 minutes faster than the MIT Alert messages to my email and phone. I hope I'm not the only one who finds that utterly unacceptable in an active shooter situation.
Hospital
What hospital was the cop taken to? My friend is an MIT cop that was working tonight and I can't get ahold of him.
Mass. General.
Mass. General.
your friend is probably busy doing his JOB
...which is to help find the person who shot his coworker, and is probably annoyed that people keep texting/calling him while he's trying to work, or maybe even shut off his phone because of it.
Or he's in the hospital.
Either way, why do you need to know RIGHT NOW which one it is? Take a deep breath.
You're being snarky to a
You're being snarky to a person who was concerned that his friend was possibly shot? How compassionate.
It was my friend who died
I am utterly heart broken.
I've been a "member" of UH for 3 years. I'm disheartened that someone would make such a crass response.
Thank you Adam for sharing it was MGH. Right after I saw your post I got the call.
Condolences
I'm very sorry to hear that it was your friend, and my sympathies are with you and your friend's family/friends. What a tragic loss.
So very sorry for your loss.
So very sorry for your loss.
ugh
Sorry for you loss.
My condolences
My heart is breaking for you and this officer's other friends and family.
I'm so sorry
Fisher St, for you and your friend's family. How awful.
oh gosh, so very sorry for your loss.
ignore the jackasses, and wishing you peace during these tough times.
Oh my
I am so sorry for your loss.
my condolences
I am so sorry to hear about your friend.
Thanks everyone
I still don't believe Sean is no longer with us. He was such a First Class gentleman, a hot cop (have you seen his hiking photos from Buzzfeed?!), and was going to go so far in life.
There is a memorial service for Sean this Wednesday at noon at MIT.
rest in peace
7 just reported that the officer has died.
:(
Will this week ever end?
I just missed it
First, that photo is gruesome. A warning might be in order.
I was riding my bike down Cambridge St. around 10:30 in Boston toward the MGH red line stop when a whole bunch of police cars went rushing to the entrance of MGH. When on the train platform I watched as cop cars sped back and forth over the Longfellow bridge and as the train crossed the bridge I could see one cop car appearing to block traffic headed back towards Boston. I guess I'm lucky that I was on the last train that went though the MIT stop unimpeded.
Normally I would have been suspicious but with everything in the last week I figured it was just another false alarm. Hard to believe there is this much violence considering the police presence in the city right now.
Watertown
I would be interested in any updates about Watertown. There has been quite a bit of noise here and sirens for the last 15 minutes or so.
