Can we get the army of SWAT
Can we get the army of SWAT cops and the FBI to show up and help free Roxbury from the daily terror from gangs already?
Can you get a geography lesson?
That neighborhood is not gang territory. I suppose it could be a shortcut from one gang turf to a few others, but so could yer mom's house. Beech Glen abuts a park full of yuppies and gay guys with their little dogs and is right in the middle of a bunch of million-dollar houses.
Have you ever even been on
Have you ever even been on that street?
Fort Hill
Fort Hill is to Roxbury what Savin Hill OTB is to Dorchester - mostly middle class, a few yuppies here and there, much lower crime rate than the surrounding communities, with most of the crime committed by those from the surrounding communities.
However, it is "in the way"
However, it is "in the way" of the Heath St./H-block war path, and surrounded by several career criminals on Highland.
Recent Boston gunplay astonishing
The B.P.D. radio lately is sounding like Detroit or Gary, Indiana. How many shootings since the marathon and what's the root cause? On a 50 degree Monday night? When will a reporter get around to asking Stumbles Menino or Ed Davis what the hell is going on? Here's hoping that the pistol-whipped robbery victim on Wildwood (separate incident tonight) also survives. "One City" (Lather, Rinse, Repeat).
The Annie theory
Ive been wondering how much of this recent surge of gun violence is largely due to Annie Dookhan and her marvelous chemistry techniques. It seemed like a lot of people got to walk right out of jail until their re-trial. Old crews trying to get back their turf , reignighting old drug feuds
I'm willing to bet that many of those guys plan to go down like Tony Montana before going back to jail. Just a hunch.
Yeah It is time someone
Yeah It is time someone respected in the community calls for these kids to put down the guns, maybe not Menino though."Stumbles" LMAO never heard that one before.I wonder if a lot of this is folks who were free from the Dookhan cases? There still is probably a lot of them still out there. Shootings do seem to be going of at an alarming rate.nbreami s
conservatives take pleasure in other peoples suffering
I could never understand how conservatives take pleasure in other peoples suffering, and use tragedy to sow discord. They raise apathy to the level of a pathology. "One City" (Lather, Rinse, Repeat).
Yup
Let continue to blame old White men for the repeat violence committed by young Black men. That should help resolve the issue!
Actually...
Violence happens because of racism and poverty, so yes, let's.
Poverty Yes
Racism NO! You trying to blame Black on Black crime on White on Black Hate (I assuming you calling White people racist). Sorry i don't see the logic in your absurd statement.
Racism limits opportunity
Are you going to locate your business there and start hiring people at a living wage?
Why or why not.
Well
im sorry you're absolutely right, these gang members are highly educated and posses lots of marketable skills. Maybe if the white man wasn't so racist Roxbury would have cancer research centers and engineering firms. Because you know all these young men are qualified to hold such positions.
White Guilt does make people say stupid things.
Next question
Why aren't they qualified.
Note that access to educational resources is also subject to racism.
but...
What about all the first generation immigrants living in the same communities and attending the same schools who end up going to Harvard and Yale? Gangbanging and drug dealing won't get you into college, studying will.
This is ridiculous
ENORMOUS sums of money are spent on public education and job training in America. And this has been the case for many decades. I attended a Catholic H.S. for two years, and we did with LESS vs the nearest comparable public school. But our educational performance was considerably better.
And my parents sent me to that school, paying out of their own pockets, because the public school which they helped pay for with their taxes, had inferior performance rates, and was dangerous.
Fort Hill?
Hell yes! Blue Hill ave? Probably not - going bankrupt due to theft and robbery losses or getting driven out as a racist bloodsucker for charging higher prices to make up for theft and robbery losses don't sound like good options to me. Businesses are not charities, they do it to make money. They would not open in a location that is unprofitable, alleged racism has nothing to do with it.
we have a group of people
we have a group of people that have been marginalized because of their race for 200 years--institutionally, economically, socially.
Racism may not have pulled the trigger, but it put all the pieces into place. And there is no quick solution, we are all dealing with our ancestor's mistakes. But to deny that racism plays a role is blindness
If thats
the case, please explain the Chinese, Jews, Irish, Japanese; actually every culture and ethnicity has been marginalized and treated inhumanly at one point; and if i must say FAR worse that slavery in the US.
jews
Since the beginning of time is a bit longer than 200 years, amirite?
Slavery
By going immediately to slavery when someone mentions African-American marginalization, rather than discussing all the current racism that's alive and well today and directly impacting people, you're illustrating exactly how white people think racism is a thing of the past and not something we need to be continually addressing.
Really?
And how exactly are you planning to address it? Also, why haven't you ever said anything about the plight of the Native Americans? Extermination is a bit worse than slavery, don't you think? Or was that not a part of your social work curriculum?
please lets not get into
please lets not get into pissing match between extermination and slavery.....
its not really a relevant comparison, unless you consider that the fact that we largely wiped out the native population may be why we don't have a problem with widespread native-american violence.
For the few natives left, there is certainly no shortage of social problems on the reservations, but it isn't big enough to bleed into our cities.
But neither problem should diminish the other
We????????
Just because im White doesn't mean my ancestors had any part in wiping out the Natives. Most peoples relative immigrated after the extermination of Native Americans and Slavery! That's the equivalent of me deeming every Middle Easterner a Terrorist!
I'll remember that next time
I'll remember that next time I meet someone from "the party of Lincoln"
better to ask a historian,
better to ask a historian, but as a first hunch i looked at the demographic history of the US.... 50x as many blacks as Asians in the 19th century. Over 20x as many into the middle of the 20th century (apparently lots of asian immigration the last few decades though as it is down to "only" about 2 or 3x as many african americans as asian americans). We haven't tracked religious affiliation as long as we have race, but it seems that there are about 3 times as many African Americans as there are Jews. As for Irish, I don't know, but outside of Boston there are helluva lot more Jacksons than there are Murphys.
Beyond just the sheer numbers, you have a group of people that were forced here at gunpoint against their will vs. those that came voluntarily in hope of a new future. And I don't think it has ever been legal to own an Irishman, an Asian or a Jew as a piece of property.
But that's just a first guess. This isn't meant to diminish the struggles of other minorities, mind you, but you asked a question. To that end I'd love to know what your coterie of also-rans faced in this country that was "FAR worse" than institutionalized, legal slavery.
Actually
We have trailer parks full of white trash on welfare everyone loves to laugh at and point fingers; they sell crack on street corners and pump each other full of bullets on a daily basis, right? They're poor, uneducated, marginalized and for the most part well-armed, shouldn't they be murdering each other left and right because there's so many of them? Or does your bleeding heart conveniently ignore all the poor who don't fit a certain profile?
How long did you live in a trailer court?
I lived in trailer courts for seventeen years.
Shootings were not infrequent, nor were drug deals.
Never
heard of violence in the Boston Trailer park! NEVER!
Really?
A white trash welfare town with gun crime rate as high as dot/rox? Citation please ;)
Rural areas have
Rural areas have proportionate to their population FAR LOWER violent crime rates compared to some urban neighborhoods, even though there are plenty of poor people living in rural areas.
The bulk of the type of violent crime and gun related crime America is now famous for is committed in urban areas. To a degree this is now spreading into suburban areas, but they still pale in regards to gun related murders and other violent crime.
Drugs are a problem everywhere, rural, suburban and urban. But much crime related to drug addicts [for example] are larcenies, burglaries, not murders, shootings, etc.,
We have a DEADLY violent crime problem, an epidemic or gun related violent crime, in our urban areas, and have so for the past 40 plus years. It's not an epidemic anywhere else in America.
Have you actually looked at violent crime statistics
from the FBI and DOJ? They clearly show a pattern of young black males accounting for 50% and above all homicides in the U.S., even though they make up around 5-6% [little less than 1/2 of the 13% U.S. black population], YOUNG males even less than that 5-5%. In U.S. urban areas young minority commit the overwhelming bulk of gun related violent crime. In the U.S. as a whole, they commit the majority of violent gun related crime. This is consistent year after year. They are grossly disproportionately represented as regards to perpetrators of violent crime, actually the overall majority of violent crime, in the whole country. If this were young white guys most of the people who complain and call me racist when I give these statistics would be yelling at the top of their lungs about how something at to be done about those white 'boys'. It's true. Fact is white and Asian males are proportionately under-represented, and this includes these violent poor rural whites some refer to [Northern New England is overwhelming white, rural and has a lot of poor people; it's also proportionate to population the safest region of the U.S.]
And I'm not saying all black guys or people are violent, criminals, act 'ghetto', etc. I didn't say that at all. Some people will also retort with comments about 'poverty', economic issues, etc., Trillions of $ have been pumped into our War on Poverty since LBJ declared it. We still have a problem? Trillion + dollars + for a country that in 2013 has 315 million people, the number who constitute living in poverty far less than that? We have a problem here that goes far beyond pure economics. And it angers some people that others get mad about this situation and the status quo? Year after year, decade after decade, same old, same old. Maybe we need to try a radically different course of action. Einstein said Doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results, is a good definition of insanity. Many of the social and economic policies that date back to the 60s and 70s and are still in use in one fashion or another don't work. We are insane to continue following them.
Not really, the people
Not really, the people killing each other are of the same race. In fact the problem really seems to be why young men are so willing to off each other.
Yes, exactly
Why are so many young Black men living in poverty turning to violence and crime? Because so many don't have the kinds of opportunities where they're surrounded by people who are successful and ethical and they get the message that most people like them have a successful future ahead of them that they'd be stupid to throw away. Why don't they have these opportunities? Systemic racism.
For you young kids
this shit has been going on for at least 40 years. War on poverty, reforms, midnight basketball, more money for schools and the children, outraged Baptist ministers, candle light vigils, take back the night, take back the streets, Nation of Islam, community policing, community outreach programs, free medical clinics, masshealth, food stamps, section 8, public housing, tax credits for new job hires, crazy checks for the kids, Americorp...I've seen it all. Roxbury strong, rinse-repeat.
yup
...you'd almost think that it was a huge multigenerational societal problem that is woven into the fabric of our economy, governmental structures and very culture which refuses to be budged by underfunded, short-term one shot solutions that fail to address the systemic issues underlying the causes of all this.
Thank god we can just blame the Negroes for it all.
Nah, the systematic
Nah, the systematic elimination of responsibility for oneself has worked wonders for increasing criminal behavior by remove the stigma and personal cost of failure to become a productive member of society.
This is why the inner city has the same problems as stereotypical rural trailer parks. Same mentality, same problems, different setting.
Sure. Personal
Sure. Personal responsibility. That's all that's missing here. These gang-bangers would surely be upstanding fine young men, if only they'd take some responsibility for their station in life and pull themselves up by their bootstraps. I'm sure they'd have no problem overcoming the physical and environmental impediments of poverty, and would magically be granted access to homes free of domestic violence, parents who know how to guide their kids through the local schools and streets, streets where they don't feel threatened, teachers who don't write them off as lost causes, and schools where they'd learn the skills they need to go to college and get boring white-collar jobs where they could post hilariously tone-deaf arguments on the internet while they're supposed to be working on the client proposal.
...oh, sorry about that, I just typed "fuck you, you ignorant piece of shit," and autocorrect must have caught it and swapped in my normal response. Keep living the suburban dream, anon; I hope that picket fence is nice and tall!
I grew up in a shithole and
I grew up in a shithole and was smart enough to know not to crap where I ate. It's about time more young men figure that out for themselves. The neighborhood was a dump because the residents allow it to be one and when enough of us started picking the place up it stopped being a shithole.
Careful there buddy
Your bleeding heart is about to create another biblical flood.
Well then?
What is your solution, Mr Genius? I heard lots of buzzwords that get people elected, but that's about it.
Who Cares
by the time people stop posting on this thread someone else will fall victim to the daily gun violence in Boston.
