What a shame. His column was one of the few
remaining reasons to pick up the Globe.
Another adult leaves the building. Brace yourself
for more cheese makers and garlic scapes.

And how was today's noon time chat with the resident
Psychic? Anybody attend?

Let's see - continue at the Globe and be sent off to write about inane lifestyle stuff in sections of the paper where it doesn't belong ...

OR ...

Move to a major global megacity and get paid a heck of a lot more to take a more global view for a very highly regarded global news organization.

I wish him all the best and I'll set my google news feed to pick up his work at Bloomberg.

He's one of my favorites, with knowledge of the city that is not easily replaced.

I'll definitely miss reading Bailey's work in the Globe, but he's on to bigger (and better) things at Bloomberg. Good for him!

Seth Gitell reacts and recounts:

When I told my mother, a lifelong reader of the Globe of Bailey’s departure, she said "he was the last of the best."

Dan Kennedy: His voice comes pretty close to being irreplaceable.

Please, please God, spare Peter Hotton.

They don't want Hotton to leave, since his pension is likely more than what they want to pay him at this point.

My husband grew up next door, and husband ain't young himself.

Actually he already took a buyout, I think the first one offered.

Maybe you can find an "underbridge" style trap? Bait it with some noisy kids or pesky neighborhood off-leash pets and you'll do fine!

Joe Keohane explains why Bailey was so important to readers:

... When someone like Bailey hangs it up, it doesn’t just hurt the paper he works for, it has the added effect of denying the public entrance into those backrooms where big decisions are made—the same backrooms he showed a practically magical ability to get inside. It's like a door closing for those of us in the dwindling paper-reading population. One that won’t be reopening any time soon. ...

Baily was easily the most intellignet voice on Finneran's morning show.
