No more Bob Lobel or Joyce Kulhawik

Think they'll just ride off into the sunset, though?

The Outraged Liberal, himself a recovering journalist, explains why this should matter beyond not having a familiar face on the tube every night:

... Nothing against bloggers (one of my best friends in the mirror is one). But as we discussed long ago, while journalists can be bloggers, bloggers are not necessarily journalists. Neither are radio and TV yak show hosts. Look no further than the one being hosted by a convicted felon who used to run the state. ...

I'm not sure why but this makes me sad. I pretty much lost all respect for Lobel after the *issue* between him and the world that occurred after the BCN river rave. He's just a yucky old dude. Joyce though, I really like her. throughout her struggles she has remained on point and pretty.
I guess they are both a loss, I remember watching them when I was very small. This seems bigger than Chet & Nat, I wonder if they will get a chronicle episode out of it?

What was the "BCN river rave" and what did Bob Lobel have to do with it?

The river rave was this big concernt from the radio station wbcn. Lobel often was on the show talking sports. Back in the day of Nick Carter they had women flash them. On stage, Lobel went up and asked girls to flash him and some ~14 yo girls in the front did and he got in trouble. Thats the vague remembrance. basically: Lobel=idiot

It's all about Bob (age 64) who WBZ wants to buy out of the remaining two years of his contract. Is it usually the case he'll get less than he would if he were working over that period?

I'm not particularly enamored with Bob's style, kind of a cliquish and smirky insider sports coverage but he was a professional on air.

Here's to hoping we don't get another Joe Amorosino in Bob's place. No Joe, but I'd love to see Wendy Nix take it unless she's already outgrown Boston.

i guess so if you consider being half in the bag professoinal.it seemed like lobel would disappear for long streches and then come back tanned and rested.hmmmmmm.then he would begin the slide into that rouge faced, slurring marble mouth.i will admit i tuned in. i was always amused when lobel would finish his sporstscast and then and then try to have witty banter with the anchors.sometimes he made no sense at all.liz walker used to help him out on bad nights but the newer anchors just stare at him and wonder why they cant get drunk at work.

i think they should hire all of steve burtons brothers to be the sports-team.those guys are great.

We all know Bob Lobel wasn't drunk, just tired.

i have watched this guy for the whole twenty years and im going to bet that he was more than tired on several occasions. lets say he was allegedly more than just tired? and if the patriots went deep into the playoffs, and played a saturday night game, he was completely tiredfaced.

"My feeling with Bob is not looking for the next five years,
but for the next 10 or even longer," says Julio Marenghi, president and general manager of Channel 4 and UPN38. "He's one of a kind."

As for Lobel, he says he's not ready to leave, but he's also
realistic. "They call it 'sunsetting' in this industry: They 'sunset' their talent. I don't know how they're going to sunset Lobel. But I hope we all know ahead of time, because there really aren't that many happy endings in this business."

Lobel was good... a generation ago.

Joyce? When she started the "Here's the designer gown I'll be wearing to the awards ceremony", it was time to go. Somehow, she started thinking she was a star, rather than a script reader. Go away, Joyce.

i never saw lobel in there but i know he has been. i did see john henning come in one night, slammed back two shots of something and left. about twenty minutes later i looked up and there he was on WBZ. allegedly.

Me? I'd be out after a beer. But John Henning must be a two-fisted journo from back in the day and so made of stronger stuff. It's not like he was flying a plane or operating heavy machinery.

And even if Lobel does show up in bars, by itself, so what? Plenty of people have taken advantage of these establishments following Repeal.

Fire all but one of the FIVE meteorologists. Stop buying Doppler radars:

Sell the countless weather computers you've collected on ebay and go old school with magnetic weather maps. This will actually allow you to budget more money on real news reporting and less on Dr. Mallika Marshall's lip gloss and makeup products.

do we really need it shoved down our throats every 4 minutes? do i really give a f#$% that harvey and dick are working together?i dont even check the weather from october until patriots day. im a beach person.

I've had the pleasure of working with Bob Lobel on a couple of voice-over jobs, as producer/engineer. He is a consummate pro and a nice guy. He deserves nothing but the best.

Consummate pro? You must have missed all the times he went on air in a daze. Ole' Bobby could barely get a word out.

"Ummm.... yeah... ummm."

The phrase "party like a Kennedy" comes to mind. He seems to have shaken it off recently.

Well, I didn't say I worked with him on-air. He came in to read a script on a couple of different occasions. He was prepared, made no flubs, gave the right intonation, etc. My experiences with him were all good.

Martin: Lobel was a fun guy to watch, and I'll miss seeing him on the air.

Will Ng: In recent years he's become more entertainment than sports, but it was always good to see a familiar face on TV.

Teddy Kokoros notes the prominence with which the Herald played the story:

... It was a case of a dying institution (the local news paper) reporting on the death on another institution (the local Sports Anchor) I don't write that with any glee or satisfaction. I was a sports and news nut from a young age and grew up reading the Herald and the Globe (Jackie MacMullan is reported to be leaving that paper) and watching Lobel. ...

Art Hennessey says farewell to Lobel and Kulhawik:

... Bob Lobel and Joyce Kulhawik are really some of the last remnants of newscasters for my generation's childhood, but I guess that brand has outlived its usefulness, finally. The next generation will always have Maria Stephanos's skirts and boots to remember. ...

was constantly trying to justify her existence. Giving her airtime was a waste of bandwidth. I can't remember the last time I saw her, but the feeling afterwards was always "Who cares??".

Lately, I've been wondering when Lobel would fade into the sunset, but I actually kind of like him. He's got enough experience and knows enough people, so that he can sometimes come up with good stuff.
Example: When the Sox won in 2004, all the TV reporters were on the field trying to get people to talk with them on the air. I was flipping thru the channels. Mike Lynch was absolutely useless, like a lost puppy out there. It was comical trying to see him try to capture the moment. Lobel was actually entertaining, very comfortable in the situation, and added to all the fun that was going on.

Not a big fan of theater or cinema? She is/was the Arts correspondent. She also beat cancer in a tough fight for her life.

I think she did her job quite well, and she was a class act overall. She even got a stint with the national media, as I recall.

Personally? I thought she was annoying - but I'm not the classical music/ballet/showtunes type. My finding her annoying doesn't mean she didn't have a place or merit airtime.

It's too bad for the arts and entertainment community that Joyce is leaving. She is a class act and the only arts and entertainment reporter who lasted this long. Unfortunately, the museum openings, school plays, movie reviews, concerts, etc. will now go unreported or be reported by someone who does not know what they are talking about...

the new gm at wbz doesn't know what it means to run a BOSTON network.

tonite, on the Brattle Street Alert over on WGBH.

And you would think that neither of these two
self-absorbed "personalities" had ever heard
the phrase lay-off before. I guess that just
happens to the little people, their viewers.

They're practically chanting "Oh the Humanity!" at
each other.

Memo to Bob Lobel, et al. The only person in the
Boston area with a job-for-life is Tom Menino. The
rest of us have to watch the jumps and deal with the
bumps. Welcome to what happened in the IT world
during the dot-bomb correction. Suck it up and
move on. Self-pity is bad box office.

I thought it was good TV.

Emily kept after Bob asking the questions, is this a sea change? what is the future of the business?

Neither one of them wanted to say it... "Fox 25" style vapid youth-oriented people stories is the future; fast, loud, user polls, teasers and little substance.

I recall watching both Bob Lobel and Joyce Kulhawik for many years growing up in the Boston area and enjoyed both of them. While I am more of a sports person than an art person, they both provided unique perspectives.

I had an opportunity to be interviewed by Bob Lobel at the 4th of July Esplanade activities in 2007. We discussed golf, the Red sox, the war in Iraq and many other topics. He participated in shooting several salute artillery rounds during event and was a gentlemen. Bob was a consummate professional and I enjoyed meeting and speaking with him.

I was in recovery from surgery with this narcissistic piece of trash when he was in recovery as well. He was rude abusive and disrespectful to the nurses. On air, te guy couldn't keep his eyes open enough to read the teleprompter. He's a drunk, and drunks have no place on TV. Hey bob, I guess we will call this "Last Call".
