Boston Police report a man officers spotted running down Talbot Avenue with a gun pointed the loaded weapon at them before running off.
With a growing number of officers chasing him, Shavea Ferguson, 19, was eventually arrested without further incident on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number and multiple counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, according to police and the Suffolk County District Attorneys office.
Police say the incident started around 6:50 p.m. when drug officers on patrol on Talbot Avenue near Dorchester Avenue "observed an individual sprinting down the street with a silver-colored firearm in his hand." Police say the officers got out of their cruiser and ordered him to stop and drop the gun:
Upon seeing the officers, the suspect initially pointed his firearm in the direction of the officers and then, reconsidering his decision, took off on foot. Officers quickly gave chase in an effort to apprehend the suspect. Despite repeated commands instructing the suspect to drop the weapon, the suspect refused and continued running. After a lengthy foot pursuit, officers were able to chase down and apprehend the suspect. A search of the immediate area, retracing the steps taken during the foot chase, enabled officers to locate and recover a loaded firearm that had been discarded by the suspect as he attempted to elude officers.
Ferguson is scheduled for arraignment in Dorchester District Court today.

It's a firearm that gang members usually stash somewhere inside of their community. When someone needs it they go and grab it. When they are done they return it to a hiding spot.

Maybe I'm missing something but why is a guy from Roslindale part of a gang from the Ashmont area? Or is the idea that the gun is a community gun for Roslindale gang members and that he brought it into the Ashmont area to commit a crime?
Which leads me to my next question: WTF is up with all the gang violence across the city this year? Roslindale, Jamaica Plain, Roxbury, Dorchester, Mattapan. It's like they're going to the mattresses or something.

Nothing says he's affiliated with a gang from Ashmont. Judging from the story, if it's factual, the suspect was seen running with a firearm in hand & that's when they pursued him.
So he was likely running after someone or away from someone while holding a gun in his hand.
I'm guessing its a community gun from wherever he is affiliated with. He likely was in ashmont to commit a crime. That's just me piecing together information and making a guess.

When a gang or "cummunity" shares a gun. This gun is stashed in a location where only the gang knows (under a bush, in a brick wall, under a house, etc). When one of the gang members needs this gun, they get it and return it to the location.
This does two things, it makes one gun available to a larger number of people, and people don't have to carry it around all the time and worry about getting stopped with it.

Ya they should really follow the policy of "get shot first, capture suspect later." Last time BPD KILLED a suspect was after being shot at by a unemployed low-life during the middle of the day. I feel its safe to assume, you're not the most productive member of society.

Can a gun commit a crime by itself? I am just so tired of hearing officials tout the fact that they have "one less gun on the street that will harm someone". Don't get me wrong, one less gun is a good thing. But maybe if the courts got on board we would have "one less scumbag on the street that will harm someone". Yes, illegal guns are a HUGE problem, but so are the career felons who are allowed to continually walk free after repeat offences.Does anyone think for a second that this was Mr. Ferguson's first violent offence? . . . or his last? He will be back out on the streets in no time. Cops should keep an eye on him, young Shavea is likely to be a good source of illegal firearms in the future. and the beat goes on.

It would be very easy to claim the suspect "pointed a gun in the direction of the police", as once we hear this he is "bad" and cops are "good". It seems like the kind of added detail meant to make the suspect extra unsympathetic. Why would someone who wanted to run away point a gun first?
An MBTA bus driver accelerated on the gas as I stood directly in front of the bus this morning, attempting to board. It was an outrageous and aggressive act, and I am leaving out much of the "color", but I called MBTA police aftwards, completely shaken, and was even more disturbed to be treated with hostility, like an interrogation. The officer I spoke with cut me off repeatedly, trying to rephrase the story to make it seem as though I, not the driver, was in the wrong. Gave me quite a taste of the extent to which those in authority will go to protect their own. So this unproven detail in this firearm story makes me bristle a bit.

Per the DA's office, which says that's the amount it requested. Should Ferguson, a.k.a. Shavea Fyffe, make bail, he will have to wear a GPS device, stay inside between 5 p.m. and 9 a.m. and "stay away from the three Dorchester men with whom he was associating just prior to the incident" while his case is pending.

Fortunately he didn't breach the invisible walls of Ashmont Hill where he might have found himself on the receiving end of a strongly worded letter of reprimand from the HOA. Actually, that'd never happen. More likely he'd have been welcomed in for tea as a sort of curiosity, a la Six Degrees of Separation. Seriously, it's amazing how much trouble there is in Ashmont with the politically connected association leaders so close by. But as long as you don't disrupt their dinner parties, the people of that neighborhood couldn't care less what happens around them.The only thing they know about Dot is what they see out their car window on the way to Cambridge. They treat AH like a bedroom community with an 02124 zip code that gives them street cred at wine tastings in JP. That neighborhood is so annoying.

They pay their taxes, they don't trash their neighborhood, they don't bother anybody, and most importantly they don't run around with illegal firearms. Dorchester would be a much better place if ALL of it was like Ashmont Hill. Or would you prefer to see it as a dirty, crime-infested shithole a la Grove Hall or Bowdoin/Geneva?
