T says South Station problems not their fault, riders go 'Oy, gevalt!'
The T and Keolis say Amtrak's signal system failed on the Northeast Corridor this morning, and since Amtrak and the T's commuter trains share some of the same tracks and stations, that led to massive delays and exhortations to riders that they just get off at Back Bay or JFK and ride the subway into town - with assurances their commuter-rail passes would get them onto the Orange and Red Lines.
A Keolis spokesman explains:
A little before 6 this morning, there was an systemwide Amtrak power failure, impacting inbound and outbound commuter rail service at South Station. Power was restored about an hour later. In the interim, because trains could not get into or out of South Station, passengers were switched to subway stops along their respective lines to keep their commutes going rather than wait for the issue to be resolved. Still, we have residual delays and train cancellations along some lines. 30-45 minute delays on average.

No, they didn't say that
They said it was Amtrak's fault ...
They booted us off the train
They booted us off the train on the Framingham/Worcester Line at Yawkey this morning (which luckily is my stop anyway). Ended up getting into Yawkey about 10 minutes late (7:20).
I can't help but think if it had been MBCR's call, we'd still be sitting on the tracks somewhere in Newton. At least people could walk to Kenmore and continue their commutes.
I agree
.
Because unlike MBCR, Keolis is smart enough to do something like that!
Now, can we get Keolis
to take over the Green Line as well? Because they'd likey recognize that the way to deal with "switch problems" at North Station (which have happened at least twice this week) is to lock the switches in the normal position and run the C's to Lechmere, instead of forcing C passengers to board already overcrowded E trains and transfer at Park Street.
Hows that
The conductors are the same, the engineers are the same, even the dispatchers are the same. Not sure Keolis had much to do with the decision.
Then why in all the years of
Then why in all the years of MBCR operation was something this sensible not been implemented as a standard contingency procedure?
It was....it's the same I've
It was....it's the same I've been seeing for the past 4ish years while commuting on the Old Colony Line...they'd drop us at whatever Red Line Station was closest. What used to irk me was when it wasn't communicated to the Red Line personnel...I use a 10 Ride, so now I carry a charlie card with extra money on it just in case. I've just never seen anything to this extent...
Makes you wonder if the bag
Makes you wonder if the bag searches at Forest Hills this morning were to protect riders from bombs or from decaying infrastructure.
