Two shot in Charlestown

Shooting scene in Charlestown

Main Street remained a crime scene well into the night. Photo by Christopher Kiertz.

UPDATE: One of the two victims, Ryan Morrissey, died.

Around 9:40 p.m. outside 274 Main St. At least one of the victim's injuries were severe enough to have the homicide unit called in, just in case.

Police are looking for two men who fired the shots, one white, one black, both about 5'10" to 6' and both wearing hoodies, who ran onto Salem Street, then jumped into a dark green sedan, partial plates of 101KK. John Duffill reports the car was driven by a white man.

The car likely has major rear-end damage, because in his haste to escape, the driver backed into a car at Salem and Pearl. It might be either an older 7-series BMW or a newer Ford Taurus.

I thought we didn't do that sort of stuff so brazenly here anymore. also explains why the Fox 25 News Van is camped out on my street.

When the cretins are found and it turns out they were driving a BMW, they'll be pissed it was confused with a Taurus. Might as well drive Yugo.

Bangle Butt is very Fordesque in a lot of ways. Similiar to the Astonification of cheaper Fords

As of 6:45 this morning, there were two squad cars at the scene, one of each side of the street. Officers didn't seem to be doing anything except standing talking to each other. Maybe deterring retaliation?

This stretch of Main Street of charlestown has been plagued by loitering by shiftless teens, ex cons, junkies and drug dealing, despite the fact that families and school children must pass by. The residents of this section have been begging for help from the City and BPD to deal with the people who hang around here, menace residents and deal drugs. The police and political leadership, while not exactly dismissive, haven't dealt with this area in a serious way. This was bound to happen.

and while they're at it, perhaps they could do something about the double parking situation that happens all. the. time. in front of Toni Ann's EVEN when there are spots -- there are people double parked there. it is mind boggling to me.

I think curbing violent crime is a little higher on the list of priorities than your "UGH!!! DOUBLE PARKERS AGAIN! WHAT'S THIS WORLD COMING TO" crusade is.

Main St. has been problematic since I was a kid, and my pa still tells me about the 70s when there was a different gang on every corner. I think it is way better than that era, and moderately better than it was in the 80s-90s. No matter how many upwardly mobile people move in and make pleas for help, delinquent behavior will probably persist.

It will persist unless we collectively evolve into a more sociably equitable society where the families of these kids can have better access to the same resources that are limited when living in poverty and/or stable conditions. That we seek to create a society where disparities in wealth and class are reduced. The polarization of wealth and poverty in C-town has bred resentment ever since the Townie diaspora started when the Navy Yard shut down.

The only 'resource' that is unavailable to those that perpetually loiter on this section of main St is parents that should have (or should still be) instilled a somewhat acceptable level of morality at a younger age.
It does not take any ability of 'upward mobility' to know that nothing good could come from spending your days and nights hanging on a sidewalk.
Let me ask, did your 'pa' let you get involved with whatever crew was hanging there in your day? I bet not.
This has nothing to do with the differences of the haves and have nots financially and everything to do with the expectations of what is acceptable behavorial tendencies and what aren't. The 'delinquent behavior' shouldn't have been accepted regardless of the tax bracket of those partaking in it.
The idea that old Charlestown with the blue collar, hard working people of the navy yard goes hand in hand with this crap behavior should be an insult to what the neighborhood claims to have been.
If what goes on there everyday is acceptable townie behavior, I will take the toonies/yuppies any and everyday.

My first question to you is. How long have you lived here? These "punks " as you like to refer to them as are far from punks. They come from working class families who bust there ass on a daily basis to give their kids a good CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATION. They both volunteer their time at the boys and girls club they are both active in charlestown sports. They were INNOCENT BYSTANDERS. Your outrage ,should be that such an act does happen not just here but all over the city. I understand that hanging on a street corner is not going to garner these kids any loyalty from the likes of you, but before you decide to bash people KNOW YOUR FACTS OR KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT. For the record I myself hung on main street corner of Sullivan and main). Today I've been a nurse (just like one of the victims mother's) for the past fifteen years I even raised a daughter here who also hung on those streets who is now in law school. My advice to you be outraged at the ACT OF VIOLENCE STOP POINTING THE FINGER AT THE VICTIMS. SHAME ON YOU!!!!!!

when I pass through it on the way to Boston.

I'll admit that I haven't stopped around here, but that's because there isn't really anything here to stop for -- no shops, bars, restaurants, etc.

The part of Main Street right outside of the convenience store is probably one of the busiest places in Charlestown. Within 100 yards you can find a yuppie Whole Foods, coffee shop, baby store and normal, townie nail salons, papa ginos, and a little farther along three places to have a beer if you want (99, WT, and a Thai place). Do you have your eyes open when you drive through ?

I came through there around 6:15 on my bike and there were a couple of cruisers in the area.

Most evenings I see at least one cop car in that stretch, or, cops swinging through the Medford Street areas if I cut over that way.

From the looks of it, they assign at least two cars to cruise between Main and Medford Streets, cutting through the small streets here and there.

I wonder how heavily it is patrolled after rush hour, though.

Clarification needed - I thought the description that went out was for 2 men - one wearing a dark hoodie and one wearing a white hoodie. I believe one suspect was white, but I'm not sure if the other man was black ?

Additional information on: (1) status of victims, (2) (non)cooperation of one victim, and (3) status of police investigation (not random shooting).

The kid in bad shape is not a druggie or dope pusher. He comes from a long line of the best Townie stock ever to grace the town. He is just a kid who enjoys hanging out with his buddies. YOU DO NOT MENTION THAT IT WAS A HISPANIC MALE WHO DID THIS ACT. They come down from the bunker hill projects and decide to shoot whoever is around because they are racist haters of whites. there was no white kid with the Spanish kid--the media fed that one so no one would accuse the poor minorities of being racist--WAKE UP

Aren't there whites closer to the BH projects that this guy could have shot if he just wanted to scratch his "racist" itch? I don't know the victims or if they were involved with drugs, but your theory doesn't hold the first drop of water.

I'm appalled by some of these comments!! Are you people seriously blaming the victims for being shot because they were outside???? How does that make any sense!!! It shouldn't matter if you're outside hanging with friends, walking your dog, running an errand, smoking a cigarette - you should be able to exist outdoors without getting shot. There should be no victim blaming, no racism, no assumptions & stereotyping... none of it - everyone should be praying for the poor kid laying up in a hospital fighting for his life and praying that BPD finds the people who did this and work to get the illegal guns off the streets for the safety of ALL!!!

Who is blaming the victims?

I don't think anyone is disagreeing that we hope the police find the shooters and the DA punishes them. I also think that a lot of people are trying to make sense of this, which is difficult given how little information is out there.

Calm down.

Rob, my comment isn't directed at you but if you scroll up and read other comments you'll see what I mean.

I'm not trying to come off as hostile but its just sickening to me. I understand trying to make sense of the situation, I think we all are. and I agree there is very little information available which makes it harder to come to terms with what happened. Unfortunately, it seems as though more people are calling into question why these kids are hanging outside as opposed to questioning who and why there are men running around with guns, shooting people... Many people think that closing down a convenience store is the solution - rather than focusing on getting guns out of the wrong hands (which is being mentioned on other threads). Hopefully I'm wrong. But judging by this comment thread and many others I've seen on other news articles regarding this shooting, I'm not too far off in my opinion here.

I'm glad we agree on hoping the police find the shooter but it's a shame we can't all agree on hoping and praying for the recovery of the two victims.

I'd love to calm down but I find it hard to be calm when there are two boys laid up at MGH suffering from gunshot wounds and the shooters are still out among us.

We agree the police should be hunting down the shooters. (Although I've read on the CBS website that the police say the 19 year old refuses to cooperate with them. What's that about?)

We also agree that we're all hoping for a quick and full recovery for the victims. No one should be gunned down on the street. Where does anyone suggest differently in the comment section?

But people are also expressing frustration with what they perceive to be an ongoing problem with criminal activity in front of A-1 Convenience. The existence of that discussion actually shows that people care about Charlestown and want to fix the problem so more people are not shot. We can try to improve our community while also hoping for full recoveries.

The level of criminal activity in front of that store is minor compared to the projects. It's just that "newcomers" wouldn't dare walk through the projects day or night. so all you ever hear people complain about is the "junkie" "punks" "without parents to guide them".

My only response to that--a HUGE eff you to that.

Since many seem to know it all....ever think it's connected the murder of a 19 yo who just tried to break up a fight 18 months ago. COMPLETELY INNOCENT. ....i remember when "you" had something to say about him too. Apparently, the hispanic family and friends of the convicted scumbag are mad at the kids who testified or spoke out on behalf of their murdered friend. That gives them carte blanche to leave the sanctuary of the bricks and go shoot a 17 yo BABY -- who by the way is involved with the substance abuse deterrent groups in town, a volunteer for any association needing help, coming from 2 parents who are MARRIED and OWN their own single family home just blocks away. Could POSSIBLY be the reason the 19 yo victim in this shooting is hesitant...RETALIATION AGAIN.

I'm so sick and tired of people complaining about these kids. Generations of us hung on all those corners......what produced? Yes, some tragedies. But more successes than not. We are police officers, fire fighters, nurses, teachers, lawyers, activists, politicians (or politically involved), homemakers, corrections officers, union members who build your homes and office buildings, doctors, professional sports athletes, volunteers across the board of all different organizations, business executives, support staff, IT professionals, child care workers, city/state/federal employees, of ALL branches of our US Armed Forces - most deploying multiple times for YOUR freedoms......to b*#×h and complain about kids hanging out.

I agree with the previous poster - OUTRAGE doesn't begin to explain how I feel about these forums and your comments.....but I did it to myself. Because I KNOW if I came here, it's exactly what I would see. I hope to GOD nothing ever happens to you while driving down to Whole Foods, or a dinner at Tangierino....because your new neighbors will take to this board and say how you had it coming to you......DISGRACEFUL. EACH AND EVERY COMMENT that says otherwise.

BHA and other housing authorities have no backbone. They rely on the Boston police and their 1 housing officer in Bunker Hill to address situations in their property, and usually then its already a bigger problem than it had to be.

People are allowed to move in and then they go crazy like its their own personal party house. They have this idea that they can disrupt neighbors and ruin quality of life and no one will care. No warnings or consequences are given to new tenants signing a lease that address for instance, parties, guests, violence, etc. NOTHING. The biggest thing they push right now is about smoking cigarettes since now they have a no-smoking policy. Big whoop. There is no anonymous hotline for residents to call about problems they see, and if you report someone in person, just hope that the office doesn't tell them that it was their neighbor complaining.

Aren't landlords expected to be held accountable for their lack of security and out of control tenants? Graffiti, broken locks on doors, and lights out, any property manager doing a walk through would notice that. But nope not with BHA, unless someone reports it, sometimes multiple times before its fixed, it just stays the way it is. Ever hear of the broken windows theory?

I am not saying that the BHA projects are the sole problem because they aren't. But they do play a role, all of the housing developments do because people tend to congregate near or in them weather they live there or not.

How do I come up with these opinions? I am here. In the middle of them and see and hear it with my own eyes and ears. There has been shootings and gunshots, and what is done? Nobody will be there to protect residents who want to live peacefully and report problems. Good people in the projects aren't really welcomed with open arms either around here. Its an isolated feeling being at the mercy of the Occupancy Department, hoping they don't place criminals in the next empty apartment. The police and fire come to clean up, and move on. Its too late then. Why should this kid talk to the police when clearly they can't protect you once someone is emboldened enough that being arrested and put in jail isn't a deterrent anymore?

This problem transcends Charlestown. And its not the only issue that leads to senseless violence, its just a piece. A beautiful child has lost his life and there is nothing that can fix that. How many more have to die, how many families have to grieve before respect for life is DEMANDED instead of gently and meekly requested?
