It's bad enough when some yahoo writer from New York can't tell Southie and Dot apart, but when some local writer can't?
Memo to every writer everywhere who would write more than one sentence about recovering thug Mark Wahlberg: HE'S NOT FROM SOUTH BOSTON and he did his maiming and rock throwing in Savin Hill, which is in Dorchester, which is an entirely different neighborhood.
Last week, we had some Columbia Journalism School graduate at the Daily Beast proclaiming Wahlberg grew up in "the rough Dorchester section of Massachusetts, otherwise known as 'Southie.' "
Today, though, it was Boston Magazine, of all news outlets, proclaiming
The Internet backlash against Wahlberg’s pardon request is evidence enough that there are some out there who still don't think he should be cleared by the State for what happened years ago in Southie.
They've since deleted the Southie reference, but, of course, nothing ever dies on the Internet.

code words
It amazes me that the news media has made this story about a man seeking redemption for crimes committed when he was a teenage thug into a tale of racism complete with the code word for white racism 'southie'
The media should do a story on the attacks on the Vietnamese community in Dorchester that occur daily in the Boston Public schools. I was told by the bother of a city councilor of vicious attacks at Savin Hill station and JFK station where young Vietnamese girls were beaten senseless by other students
corrected that for you
You're welcome.
Let's be totally honest
I'm not a particular Wahlberg fan, although think he's a good actor, but: This story has legs because it involves a white guy (teenager / kid) who was a thug who jumped and robbed people in an urban neighborhood, including 'people of color'. He behaved like an asshole, same as the black, Hispanic, and Asian (yes, there are Asian punks and thugs, or did you think they're all international students at MIT?) who did and do engage in similar activity. But the huge publicity is because he's white. There are many well known black rappers (for example) who also jumped and robbed people on the street (and you can absolutely bet some of them where white, and that racial epithets were used; some were undoubtedly also Asian), yet very little outcry, especially from those who like to call themselves 'progressive', especially white progressives. Similar violence within the Asian community(s) is also common, almost always aimed at other Asians.
Whalberg didn't grow up priviledged, didn't grow up middle or upper middle class in Newton or Lexington. He was a product of his environment. He shows zero signs as an adult, as being the thug he was as a socioeconomically deprived teenager, in fact he is a high functioning and very productive member of society who has an established record of giving back and helping others less fortunate. If the gentleman who was assaulted and robbed gives his blessing, than the issue should be settled. Of course, those with ideological and political motivations that revolve around keeping 'racism' (that should read white racism; most non-white racism is ignored or forgiven by white progressives) alive and the base angry and radicalized.
Bill Cosby called
He'd like to hear more about your theories on how only white guys are oppressed these days.
What is the racial angle
with Cosby? I'm not aware of anyone making a fuss over the fact some of the women he allegedly assaulted were non-black. My issue with the Wahlberg incident is it's part of the latest meme regarding 'racism', and how it's being overblown and used primarily for ideological and political purposes, as I previously described.
I have zero issue with anyone, regardless of their so called race or background being called on for bad behavior, real or alleged. I do have a problem with how some (when I mention progressives previously, I should have prefaced with 'some') routinely play up any example of white racism, imagined or real, but also routinely ignore non-white racism unless they absolutely, possitively can't ignore it.
Nothing he said indicates
Nothing he said indicates that he believes only white guys are oppressed these days.
No, the huge publicity is because he's a famous celebrity
Exactly
And if somehow he turned his life around and so on, but only became known in the town or neighborhood where he was from, this request would not be that big of a deal. With one caveat, being that Gov. Patrick has been loathe to issue pardons.
Back in the 1950s this was a common practice. I once read the annual pardon list where the guy's list of offenses took 3 pages, but they were all when he was 15 to 19 and all for relatively minor offenses. Of course, back in those days pardons were easier to come by. In 1938 Raymond Patriarca got paroled on a pardon after spending a few months behind bars. Of course, in the end a Governor's Councilor got impeached for helping him out.
If one of those rappers had asked for a pardon...
...and they got it, hey, you'd have a point, almost. But that's not what's going on.
We're not saying that Wahlberg is an irredeemably bad guy. Nobody notable is calling for a boycott or anything like that.. But he doesn't deserve a pardon, no matter how much money he wishes to make selling hamburgers.
Adam, what about all those movies and tv shows?
The world knows that if you're white, talk with that kind of accident, and are involved in a racial incident you MUST be from SoBo!
Nope
no. you must be from Southie.
If you are a Yuppie you are from SoBo.

Read a repeat of the Corgi story.
As long as he doesnt buy the Roy Estate in the 02025, he's ok I guess
But Honestly, why do we fellate the likes of the Kennedys and the Wahlbags?
People worry about what the physical nature of a "world class" city will look like, and its an engaging discourse but in its obsession with "things," it omits the collective mindset of the City, which is still colloquial at BEST.
Resume.
You're equating the Kennedy
You're equating the Kennedy family with the Wahlbergs...? And, for good measure you throw in the tired old 'world class city' BS that only suburbanites and people who despise Boston whine about. Okay buddy, calm down and have another cup of coffee.
So the Kennedys, some of whom
So the Kennedys, some of whom dedicated their lives to public service (even if you didnt like them or their politics) are the same as a bigoted thug from Hollywood? Did you mean Reagan is the same as the Walburgs? That would be more appropriate.
Letting a girl drown and
Letting a girl drown and refusing to help her is a lot more reprehensible than what marky mark did.
Not all Kennedys
There's more than one Kennedy so it's a little ridiculous to tar them all with the same brush and them place them on a scale against Mark Wahlberg.
The bootleggers, wife beaters
The bootleggers, wife beaters, NAZI sympathizers, deadbeats, baby sitter diddlers, rapists, drug addicts, drunk drivers, and alcoholics in the family didn't help their reputation either. The Kennedys have a really BIG family which means a greater number of bad apples/cousins to provide sources of embarrassment.
According to "Last Call",
According to "Last Call", Daniel Okrent's history of Prohibition, Joe Kennedy was never technically a bootlegger, in the sense of illegally smuggling in alcohol. He was in the alcohol business at one point, but mostly post-prohibition. He did import alcohol near the end of Prohibition, but it was under a legal medicinal permit and there is no evidence that he ever sold any in an illegal manner. Now, my understanding is that by the time he made the import, it was clear that prohibition was likely going to end soon, and that his intentions were to lay in supply before the rush and not to actually sell medicine, but none of that was actually illegal. He did plenty of other dodgy stuff, but he wasn't a bootlegger.
Why does this remind me of
The Beverly Hillbillies
A small point...
...I believe a diver found her right side up in an air pocket. If true, she suffocated...
That makes it even worse.
That makes it even worse. That means if Ted had called for help they could have saved her. He's even more complicit than I thought.

I don't think the maiming
I don't think the maiming part of the story is still valid. The victim said in an article yesterday that he was blind prior to the incident.
Use Yah Blinkah
We're all from Southie, cause Southie is soooo cool. But don't worry soon it will be Chelsea. That's the new Southie anyway.
Anyway, according to "news" sources the guy was blinded in the Vietnam War. So Marky Mark probably didn't do it unless he was hanging with the VC when he was a baby. Also the victim says he should get a pardon so as far as I'm concerned, desk jockey, couch riding court rooming is done for me.
BUT I do firmly believe that Mark W owes us all and apology for Planet of the Apes.

Boston Magazine, not surprised
I've also gotten the sense that Boston Magazine was written for "people from somewhere else" by "people from somewhere else." I' surprised they didn't call him a Townie from Southie.
The reason the Dorchester
The reason the Dorchester section of Southie is so tough is they think they're from Southie and have to fight themselves all the time.
Don't even mention the Dropkick Murphys.
Bo Mag is nothing without
Bo Mag is nothing without Bernstein!
That's old news
How about all the national news outlets yesterday who didn't know (or learn about) the difference between the State House and the old State House? Google "Time capsule".
What's even worse is when
What's even worse is when they spell either one the 'Statehouse' - it's the State House.
For that matter, how about all the
national news outlets that actually consider a time capsule from a building in Massachusetts to be a newsworthy story for their audiences.
Then again, perhaps it's no different than the Washington Post breaking a story about the New England Patriots.
Too many assumptions
Just another example of the inaccuracies that prolifeeate our news media. I'm glad we have those who stop to question assumptions. Thank you Adam!
Would have helped to have seen more of that in the Michael Brown and Eric Garner coverage.
But I do have to ask, didn't Walberg attend South Boston High School?
Nope. Snowden. Thanks for
Nope. Snowden. Thanks for playing.
re: didn't he attend Southie High
No.
u people suck..
Sobo, who ever created that should be tortured, this town has become something other than Southie, the real southie had a community atmosphere, the stolen cigarettes that fell off the truck, and whitey running the town keeping herion out..thats the southie i know and who ever said chelsea..good point its getting there..the whole country will be chelsea...

Is that a joke? Whitey was a drug lord moving drugs INTO southie (and many other parts of Boston). He was/is also a terrorist and a racist. Ok you are right, he's the embodiment of southie.
Boy the way Glenn Miller played...
Good times, huh? That Whitey, he was just a saint on fuckin' Earth, wasn't he? Good fuckin' times.

The 1980s called
They want Boston Magazine back. Seriously, that thing still exists?
I'm confused
do you mean to tell me I bought a luxury condo in Dorchester?
Walburg is from Ashmont, not Savin Hill
And I'm almost positive the attacks occurred near Ashmont Station.
I think he trashed the Boy and Girls club in Savin Hll, though.
Court records show that
Court records show that Wahlberg lived on Peverell Street on Jones Hill near the old St. Margaret's Hospital- which is close to Savin Hill— at the time of these incidents in the mid-late 80s. The family later moved closer to Ashmont before bouncing to Braintree. The store we he beat/robbed the one gent and then punched out the other poor fellow whom he happened upon is on Dorchester Ave. near Savin Hill Ave. He was not far from home. He spent a lot of time at the Boys and Girls Club, which is basically a 3-4 minute walk tops from his old house. He was eventually banned from the club — although he's now a board member and important donor.
Savin Hill
I remember this from the unauthorized biography Don't Call Me Marky Mark Baptized at St. Margaret's, but the family moved all the way to St. William's.
Family lived in Ashmont in 80's
I knew them. Wiki says parents split and Mark spent time with both. Father must have lived near St Margeret's.
There you go
The worst thing, aside from the crimes, is that I publically stated I read that book. It was kind of interesting. The author seemed okay with the youthful indiscretions, but less so with Wahlburg's seeming homophobia.
