When did they replace the South Boston snow farm with a coal pile?

Most of that dark material was originally soot that was in the air and settled on the pile afterwards. Hydrocarbons love water and when they encounter it they tend to stick and form even bigger, yuckier molecules in a matter of days, if left undisturbed. That's right - some pollution grows if left alone!
So the pile just makes visible what's constantly happening on wet surfaces in industrialized areas. If anything, the stable ice provided more suitable surface for the creation of nth-generation hydrocarbons. I really wouldn't be surprised if it turned out that the negative environmental effects were greater by letting the stuff lie around rather than melting it right away.
Yes it's much better that
Yes it's much better that they burned thousands of gallons of fuel to melt the snow instead of dropping it in the harbor where the gravel and dirt and salt might damage the ocean floor.

Do you think there's no soot in the ocean? In rivers, lakes, etc.? How 'clean' do you think the ocean should be? What about NATURALLY occurring 'pollution'? The ocean is HUGE and would easily filter it out.
Our society has become very sanitized and sheltered from reality of nature and life (and death). Our world is a fascinating place, but it's also rough and pretty unforgiving.
Because they didn't dump it
in the harbor, and let the snow pile up in the streets around the City, is why there are still mounds of dirty snow on my street the first week of April. On another note, the City Council just last week said the the purchasing of snow melters is too expensive. Jeez!

Makes you realize how much
Makes you realize how much crud our roads put into our environment. There has to be a better way to treat roads or road surface that doesn't produce all this particulate waste.
This gunk in our air and water cannot be good for health or ecology.
The windows on the front of
The windows on the front of our house are filthy from all the car exhaust and salt and road grime kicked up by cars this winter, and we don't even live on a busy street. The windows on the rear side stayed nice and clean.

I've been to the Hyde Park farm this week
Not horrible, but I don't think the skate park will be rocking for a while to come, and who knows how spring lacrosse is going.
My goal tomorrow is to track down the snow in Franklin Park. The tough part is that I have no clue where it is.
The snow pile at Franklin
The snow pile at Franklin Park is right at the clubhouse for the golf course. When I went by on Sunday, it was still about 15 feet deep where a front end loader had cut a couple of paths through the pile. Maybe they're breaking it up into smaller piles so it will melt faster.

So much snow
I don't think I could have avoided the farms at Franklin Park today. Lower golf course lot (the cut through was cool and probably 9 feet tall), upper lot by Blue Hill Ave, that Circuit Road (technically Jewish War Veterans Drive) lot where CB people used to hang out, the lot by the back entrance to the zoo (lot's of families celebrating Good Friday), but none in that lot beside the zoo.
The Hyde Park farm is at Reservation Road Park, across the tracks from the Renaissance Charter School, more or less. The park consists of an AstroTurf field for football and lacrosse, a skate park, and an odd park area adjoining the Mother Brook. Basically, the snow takes up the parking lot.
The Franklin Park snow is
The Franklin Park snow is located at the far end of the parking lot by the golf clubhouse. It looks like a trash dump. There was also snow put in the parking lot along Circuit drive just past the entrance to Pierpont road.

It looks like the city has spread black sand on the snow pile. It'll speed up melting and is not environmentally unsound.

Global Warming/Climate Change?
People can deny the effects of pollution on the climate if they like, but how can you deny the effect on the atmosphere on which we all rely to survive? Your lungs don't exactly THRIVE on that black junk, nor does the rest of your body. It isn't just the snow that's magically making it appear, you know. It's there 24/7, 365 days a year, and it's going right into you, when it isn't decorating snow mounds, that is.
After being exposed to black snow I feel injured.
I hope I can find an attorney that can get me whats rightfully mine.

Sorry the pile is not designated for condo development but
will instead be used to make slushies for Olympic visitors in 2024.

I've seen them
Got to most of them yesterday.
For the most part they are on asphalt or in parking areas. I stopped at the far end of the golf course parking lot for a bit and noticed that cascading water from the melting piles. The water was safely collected in the gulleys and ran into the storm drain.
So I severely doubt that any of the snow will "kill" any trees. That said, the Parks Department will have to eventually work with the Public Works folk to get a good sweeping in when the snow is finally gone.
