Linehan blocks quick action on possible Boston 2024 subpoena
City Council President Bill Linehan today blocked a vote to force Boston 2024 officials to show up with secret documents related to Olympic financing - until at least the council's next regularly scheduled meeting on Aug. 12.
Although council proposals rarely get voted on the first time they are formally proposed, a majority of the council indicated today they would support suspending the rules to back Councilor Tito Jackson's request for a subpoena for Boston 2024 - and a demand that officials there bring with them the two chapters of their initial bid to the USOC that they have refused to make public. The chapters relate to financial and political commitments for the proposed 2024 Olympics.
Councilors Matt O'Malley (West Roxbury, Jamaica Plain), Ayanna Pressley (at-large), Michelle Wu (at-large), Steve Murphy (at-large), Josh Zakim (Back Bay) and Charles Yancey (Dorchester) said they would support Jackson.
But Linehan instead ordered the proposed subpoena sent to the Committee of the Whole - a committee that includes all council members - for review. Linehan chairs that committee and will decide when the matter comes up for consideration there.
After the meeting, Jackson said the council rule cited by Linehan to block action today "says this will be taken up at the next meeting. I believe today that we could have put the rule aside and actually expedited the process but it's my expectation that we will take it up at the next meeting."

Hmm
Just saw this on twitter.. not sure how factual it is.. but certianly makes you go "Hmmmmmmmm"
PS - NOT happy Michelle took a 100 bucks but she is for the people so we'll forgive her for that.
No Olympics for Boston please
No Olympics for Boston please.. just think how many Boston Police officers they have to place on detail during the games. Placing a Boston police officer on detail cost big bucks it will come out of the taxpayers pockets. Bankrupt the city!!!!
Olympic Security Costs
The "2.0" Boston 2024 plan put total security costs at $1 Billion.
Externalized cost of security
Three to four weeks of unemployment benefits for everyone who works in the "secured" area.

Unemployment benefits?
They can all just spend a month on the Vineyard instead of their customary two weeks! - what the organizers seem to actually believe
I know, right?
Particularly when the cost of vacation rentals in the region will skyrocket due to the money flowing to those lucky enough to have houses that they can rent out.
Renters will be totally SOL.
Except
The IOC puts limits on what one can charge to rent their own property.
What Boston City Council
What Boston City Council President Bill Linehan did today was obstruct an attempt to get financial information about the bid for our elected leaders and the public.
It's important to know that the host city agreement Mayor Walsh signed (which he claimed he read and then claimed he didn't read) is a contract that obligates Boston taxpayers, via the City of Boston, to pay any and all budget risk (cost overruns) without limit. Wuuuuut?
So Councilor Tito Jackson, recalling the last Boston2024 city council hearing when Rich Davey showed up for a hearing on "Venues and Finances" without finances, at which Tito asked for chapters of the bid that had not been made public and recalling that Rich neither declined to provide them nor agreed to provide them but said he'd take it under advisement, figured out he was getting the bums rush from that well-financed organization. Tito said to himself and colleagues, we have the power of a subpoena let's use it to get information for the people of Boston.
That was about just before June 29. A few days later Boston2024 delivered bid 2.0 to the governors office to make good on Baker's deadline. 2.0 included financial information but left a lot missing including velodrome and aquatic center and other items.
If you live in Boston, take a moment to realize that the city council that is supposed to represent your interests is working to keep information from you, presumably information Boston2024 doesn't not want made public.
Boston2024 will release complete winning bid.. in a week. 4real
Translation
"Don't ask for facts, figures, or even try to estimate the damage here ... THIS IS A SALES JOB!"
I mean, you don't ask your car salesperson any questions, WTF are you doing here?
Linehan may have taken $1250.00
but he'll always be nothing more than a five dollar whore.
Also
You're kind of a quarter dollar dick.
Gee, John...
planning on running again? By the way, where is your real estate office located again? Whose district is it in?
No harm intended
Sorry, but I found your comment crass, that's all. There are other ways to call someone an a-hole, I'm sure you (and I) can be more creative.
PS. I don't have a real estate office. I'm a real estate broker (licensed) but I'm hardly in the business - haven't done a deal since last... October? I live La Vida Loca in Provincetown, if you must know.
PSS. Yes, I hope to run again. I didn't run this year (b/c, see "La Vida Loca", previous comment) but lord knows I wish I had. District 2 could not do worse than being represented by Mr. Linehan.
Accepted, but
these buffoons are undeserving of anything resembling civil criticism. They bank on uniformed voters and low turnout to keep themselves in their positions and should be called out for the lowlifes they are and that is why I use street language when writing about them.
If you do run again, you can certainly count on my support financially.
Yasss.
You want salty language, you should meet me in person....
And, thank you.

Council Pres Linehan obstructed an attempt to obtain information
It's going to be embarrassing when Cambridge City Council subpoenas the missing chapters of the winning Boston2024 bid before Boston.
Brookline Town Meeting and Cambridge City Council have both passed official measures opposing hosting the Olympics in 2024.
I tried
I put in between 600-700 hours as a volunteer on Suzanne Lee's two attempts to unseat Linehan. Came pretty damn close the first time (97 votes) but not so close the second time. Somebody out there must like him but I can't see why.
well
how much did lee lose by the second time around
This state is funny
We have hacks at every level of government and yet our schools, laws and economy are much better than the average US state. I don't know how good governance occurs without out good government officials, yet here we are.
My state and local representatives include:
McCarthy (Consalvo 2.0., decent guy, not much juice)
State Rep Sanchez - total hack who represents Winthrop/Deleo more than 02131
State Sen Rush - DINO patronage hack
Mayor Walsh - Democrat who represents construction unions
Gov Baker -
Bob Ryan ups the derision ante.
He was on a CBS sports talk show with a pithy summation of team 2024.

The list of Council President fails.
This is the same Boston City Council President that failed to distribute detailed Council District Maps that clearly illustrate the Names of Boundary Streets and Names of Split Boundary Streets between Districts.
Seriously
A quality electorate would have tarred, feathered and run him out of town on a rail for that egregious behavior.
