Somerville mayor to Louisiana governor: Come at me, you low-rent Barney Fife
By adamg on Mon, 08/03/2015 - 1:08pm
Joe Curtatone doesn't hold back when talking to the Herald about Jindal over illegal immigrants and "sanctuary" cities such as Somerville.

Its sound like
Curtatone is using his White Privilege to attack a POC.
Sorry bud
Wrong color - that particular shade of brown, along with yellow, us not protected by the bleeding heart poc act. Quite the contrary, it's being penalized for being too successful.
Nope!
There are plenty of Desis who are not millionaires, myself included.
It sound like he's not at all
It sound like he's not at all doing that.
What?
Did you miss the Mayor's comparing Jindal to famous people of color Barney Fife and Gomer Pyle?
Don't remind Jindal he is a
Don't remind Jindal he is a POC, he's worked so hard to forget it.
You mean he attacked our Senior Senator?
When I heard that Curtatone went after an Indian and a person of color, I figured it had to be Liz Warren.
(No subject)
Good for him
While I have my own issues as a Chelsea resident with sanctuary cities, good for Curtatone. Jindal is an ass. I cannot believe some of the anti-illegal immigration crap that comes out his mouth, considering his parents are immigrants themselves. I wonder what his parents think about all of this.. if we had tougher laws like he and his GOP buddies are proposing, his parents probably would have never immigrated here.
Then again I can't believe some of the hatred and angst that is coming out of most GOPer's mouths these days. And their followers.... are lapping it up like a cat and a spilled bowl of milk.
??????
"if we had tougher laws like he and his GOP buddies are proposing, his parents probably would have never immigrated here."
His parents came here legally, you know by following our immigration laws. Most people are upset about the individuals coming here illegally, which is a felony.
Two things:
We've now made it extremely difficult to come here legally, first through the law, and secondly through a million tiny impediments. For example, you can't show up at the immigration office at 7AM, take a number, go to work, and then come back at 3PM when your number is called; you need to physically stand in line.
While Congress made it a crime to enter the country illegally, they chose to not make it a crime to be here illegally. A large number of immigrants arrive on a tourist or visitor visa and then overstay. They have committed no crime in doing so. Don't like it? take it up with your elected reps.
Check into a hotel and
Check into a hotel and overstay your booking. See how quickly the hotel has you deported from the premises.
You do know...
...that hotels are not immigration authorities, right?
How was it harder in 1970?
The Jindal's entered the United States under the provisions of the Immigration Act of 1965, which is basically the law in effect now. The only difference is the post-9/11 (you remember, 20 guys came to the US illegally, learned how to fly planes, then succeeded in crashing the planes into 3 buildings) security clearances. The fact that there are more people who want to be in the United States accounts for lines, like anywhere popular.
Getting a visa from India is the same slog whether you are going green card, H1B, or tourist visa. I could totally see how an immigrant who jumped through all the hoops, or is in the process of jumping through the hoops, would be annoyed by someone who does not establish themselves in the United States legally.
Once upon a time, there were
Once upon a time, there were more H1B visas available than people applying. When I worked a summer for Al Simpson in the US Senate, I had to read all this background information about how the government needed to cut back on the number of visas, because they were no where near fully subscribed under the cap limits back in the 1980s. (I mention Simpson because he co-sponsored a bill that led to the use of the I9 form; I don't think the cap limiting move worked back then).
Read up on H1Bs
Current annual cap is set at around 65,000. Lottery is typically in May. And in most recent years, it takes less than 24 hours for all those visas to be gone. Our senior senator, who "supports comprehensive immigration reform" seems to have no position on a current proposal to increase the cap. I suppose that Markey would vote 'present' given the chance.
Of course, all those visas are taken by hardworking individuals from abroad. With names like Cognizant, Oracle, Infosys, Tata. Who farm them out at starvation wages (grabbing 50% of the skim) to the actual workers, who come here and live in "guesthouses" provided by the Visa sponsors, at the mercy of the same.
The H1B program stinks like a fishpier at low tide.

Yes, I know all about H1B
Yes, I know all about H1B visas as I've been in high tech recruiting since 1990. The lottery is generally in early April.
It has good points and it has bad points, as many companies do use the program legitimately.
My comment was simply that the system has changed over time and was once controversial for its lack of use.
"Facts are stupid things" - RWR
"All of them entered the country legally on a temporary visa, mostly tourist visas with entry permits for six months."
Well noted
Okay, they entered the United States using visas under false pretenses. That they had visas has made it harder for people obtaining visas for legal purposes today to get them, due to the further hoops required.
That was kind of my point about visa difficulties today.
In any event, most people illegally resident in the United States (i.e. working without authorization, staying beyond the term of their visa) entered the United States legally.
Something to consider: laws aren't perfect
In the period leading up to and during World War II, the United States never relaxed its quotas to accommodate refugees trying to escape the Holocaust. Not until 1944 was there any action, at which time it was simply too late for many. The law was not perfect then and it's not perfect now.
What would you do if you and your family were in a country where your life was in peril because of your ethnicity, your religion, or your political beliefs? Chances are, you'd be screwed, at least as far as help from the USA is concerned. Will you look at people in such a state and simply shrug and say "Not my problem"? Sure, you didn't put 'em in that situation, but if you can help...? See this link.
Anti-illegal immigration ≠
Anti-illegal immigration ≠ anti-immigration.
I didn't say that
But the way he talks, he's just against it regardless of status. And many of these comments from him and his GOP buddies, aren't very welcoming at all to any immigrants, regardless of their status. I think if they had their way, we wouldn't have any immigrants at all.. legal or illegal.
He just looks like a fool who is another lapdog for the tea party and the GOP.
He's not a person of color
Jindahl's official portrait:
He clearly self-identifies as white. This makes him out to be about five shades of foundation whiter than what I'm currently sporting.
Not the official portrait
Allegedly, that portrait was at the statehouse, but had been "loaned by a constituent." The official portrait is still light-skinned, but not nearly _that_ white.
Beat me to it
That said - I think enough of our power pooh-bahs have been taking advantage of this system for years - looking the other way while the illegal immigrant population grew to 11 million.
I think most sane people would agree - legal immigration is fine and illegal immigration needs to be stopped, especially of those that truly are criminals. The differences are partly on what we do about the illegal immigration coming in and mostly on the more difficult problem of treating those that are already here that we've been winking at as "illegals" for years and even decades, especially if they have spouses and children that not only are legal, but have only known the US as home.
Easy
Pay taxes, work, and stay out of trouble? Put them on the path to citizenship.
It amazes me that 90% of the arguments against immigration, legal or otherwise, are xenophobic arguments against capitalist economics. We need to keep population growing as a function of capitalism to keep this whole show going. Immigrants having children are really the only thing keeping us moving forward on that account.
Economics isn't zero sum, but most of the arguments against immigration outside the argument of crime appeal to a zero sum system.
And if we are in a zero sum system, game over. We got bigger things to worry about.
thank you
I've always thought the system is just broken anyways.. it should be easier to get a green card, not harder. I'm apart of the camp that finds Jindals comments to be obnoxious and just plain stupid. If you think (like trump does) and building a wall with mexico is going to stop people, you're just senile. It won't. So why not make the process easier, especially if people are staying out of trouble, have jobs, and are productive members of the community. We are a nation of immigrants whether we like it or not, and trying to stop that goes against the grain.
you're missing the point
Can you name any other modern industrialized countries with such open/lax borders as the US? Wander down across the mexican border and see what happens to you. Also, "We are a nation of immigrants" is a bit of a stretch and is some talking point created by a think tank. The United States didn't exist when people first moved to this country, it was created by settlers. The people who founded and created this country settled here. While Jindals comments were a bit ridiculous, the issue of sanctuary cities should be troubling to people. What type of precedent does it set? Can states or cities just start ignoring other federal laws they don't like such as abortion, Obamacare, religious laws? Who should be held accountable if Mayors don't uphold federal laws?
No, I'm not missing the point
Yes I'm well aware that we are a nation that has lax borders, but you're missing my point also.. you can't just say "let's build a wall" without changing the policy and/or laws surrounding it either.
The GOP likes to rattle off the "send'em home" and "let's build walls" mantra crappola they like to say to pander for votes, but when immigration reform comes down (serious immigration reform), they all pissed and moan and do nothing about it.
You can't do one without the other. Yet these politicians haven't figured this out yet.
Really? I'm not even going to touch this comment with a 10 foot pole because I could take it down in about 30 seconds in many different ways.
Did you see my first line of my first post? I never said I approved of sanctuary cities.
Why not? States do it all the time.. even right here in MA. Hello.. Medical Marijuana. The whole stated said FU to the fed on that one. Even Colorado went on to legalize it, that's an even bigger FU.
And things like Obamacare... hello. didn't several states decide not to take part in the exchanges for the ACA? (that's a form of defiance)
Regardless, when states do this, it forces the issue on a federal level either in the courts and/or in Congress to act on an issue now. Please if we waited for Congress without states pushing the envelope on issues, we'd still be living in the dark ages.
The bottom line is, we need comprehensive immigration reform NOW, not later.
Picking and choosing?
Let me guess - when AZ decided to enforce immigration laws that the Federal government was refusing to enforce - you were aghast. But when Mass and CO flouted pot laws, you lit up in celebration.
there's a lot of middle ground in this debate - sadly - nobody cares to occupy it because it doesn't get your name in the paper or let you call the other side names.
Constitutional versus statutory
I suggest you check on the difference.
Thank you Justice Swirly
I suggest you check on the difference between principles and legal nitpickery.

Sure
Spain, Italy, France, Greece.
There's a good map here if you're not familiar with the location of those countries.

The pattern is pretty consistent.
Have-nots from afflicted places flee to escape war, famine and destitution. Those of us here in Haveland object even though, in the case of the US, the Iraq War and the pauperization of Meso America by dumping corn below cost were major triggers of the mass migrations in the EU and here.

The campesinos farming economy was destroyed, so they come here to find work. If we stop dumping agricultural commodities to prop up agribusiness for its crop management failure, the campesinos get to stay home. It's like a collateral damage effect from another kind of corporate welfare.
How fair is that
Millions stand in lines and endure the process. Others jump the line, come in here under the radar - and stay there - and they get a "path to citizenship"?
No easy solution - can't just kick them all out - but I think that if you want that path - there should be some penalty for being here illegally. Otherwise - everyone will just ignore the law and eventually say "oops - sorry. Wanna stay. Here's some taxes." Thanks for the green card.
There is no easy solution. Contrary to your opinion - I've never heard a single national politician argue against LEGAL immigration. They all seem to preface their criticisms with "illegal" immigrants frequently enough to state their opinion clearly. That's a left wing canard that doesn't fly.
I have heard some argue
I have heard some argue against specific legal immigration programs. The H1B and L1 programs have come under their fair share of scrutiny and have supporters on both sides of the argument.

Do you appreciate the difference
between legal vs illegal? How many countries in the world tolerate massive levels of illegal immigration, which has severe negative impact on legal citizens of lower socioeconomic backgrounds? How many countries in the world actually have supposedly responsible elected officials who actively attempt to allow illegal immigrants to be allowed to vote?
On top of the massive level of illegal immigrants, the U.S. takes in more immigrants per year vs any other nation on Earth, including the E.U., an amalgamation of wealthy, first world nation states.
And the Somerville mayor is disingenuous when he claims Somerville would have done anything different than S.F. S.F. did exactly what was expected of it as a sanctuary city and by throwing the ball into the federal government's court. Both the federal government and City of S.F. are equally at fault for this man being on the street, and indirectly, that woman's murder.
No, he's not.
Unlike SF, Somerville is small. It is a heck of a lot easier to have an automatic check on a database when you only have one police station, and that check is somebody's job.
A city with 10 police stations, who did not have a "check the immigration 'hold' list" as part of their intake procedure, will far more likely miss a bad guy.
I suspect that any city much larger than Cambridge would have a tough time being both a sanctuary city and making sure that any arrestees are checked against federal and immigration databases.
Immigrants
My wife came here legally many years before I met her. It took her many years of hard work to become a citizen. Dude, you don't even want to know what she thinks of illegal immigrants.
Gomer?
The Gomer Pyle comment doesn’t fit. Gomer was naive but not mean spirited. He always turned out to be a lot smarter that people gave him credit for, and it only took him twenty-three minutes each week to prove it.
Is Curtatone's skin darker than Jindal?
What with all the tanning he seems to get in? Has lots of fancy suits for the mayor of a city of low income immigrants. Kinda reminds me of the pomp of banana republic dictators dressing up. Vain. King of Assembly Square!
Um
Whut?
Giving Trump a challenge
Curtatone has an inflated ego and sense of self importance, just on a smaller scale than Trump.
Um
Whut?
as do literally ALL
as do literally ALL politicians.
Somerville is a city of low income immigrants?

What about his oath
Curatone took an oath to uphold the laws of the USA and the Commonwealth. His word is worth nothing and he should be put into the penitentiary.
Are you quite sure...
Are you quite sure you know the exact details of the Somerville mayor's oath of office? Or are you just making an assumption based on overdramatic television?
When he's done something legally actionable, you go ahead and get right on that, Mr. District Attorney. Better pack a lunch while you're waiting.
This land was made for you and me.

Never mind illegal aliens, worry about Curtatone's brother
Sure, MS-13 is raping the women of "Sanctuary City" Somerville, but what about Democrat Curtatone's brother? Credible accusations of rape? Perhaps he can take Bill Clinton's place in the Democrat Hall of Fame.

You forgot to accuse O-Fish-L
Of including non-NPR news sources in his web surfing. Oh, the Humanity!
He might actually (gasp!) read the Herald, in addition to the Globe. Attacking the person and not the idea is Swirly SOP, so at least you're consistent. But try disproving the MS-13 citation around Foss Park when you want to do a Big Girl Post. (Foss Park is in Somerville, btw, but somehow it never comes up in undocumented immigrant stories in the New York Times.)
I heard that O-Fish-L accepts money from the Koch Brothers while fellating cops. Yeah, that works. Stay with that, stay in your comfort zone.

immigration debates
These arguments are SO tiresome. We never address the why of the issue. It's just a given that everyone wants to leave their family, their decent climate, their culture, their language via a route which nearly guarantees robbery, beatings, rape, and highly probable death to come to a country where they can work three jobs cleaning toilets and cutting lawns and endure the righteous bullshit, ignorant arguments of self-righteous fuckwits who will cry to the heavens about the rule of law while breaking it wherever possible in their daily lives and have no clue that the standard of living they enjoy has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO FUCKING DO WITH HOW GREAT MOMMY SAID YOU ARE and the wonderful fantasy meritocracy you mistakenly think you live in and everything to do with the fucked-up situation in these people's countries of origin which forced them to migrate in the first fucking place and which is maintained by OUR GOVT'S SHITTY FOREIGN AND ECONOMIC POLICIES that not only fuck over some campesino in the mountains of Central America but are increasingly turning us into an equivalent third world hell-hole of our own making in the name of cheap underoos at fucking Wal-Mart.
SO FUCK YOU ALL TO HELL.
