Three injured when driver goes through fence and into mud at the edge of Boston Harbor

Boston Police are continuing to investigate an incident early Sunday in which a car wound up in Boston Harbor mud at the end of Sumner and Marginal streets in East Boston.

The driver and two women, both sitting in the back seat, were taken to Mass. General with non-life-threatening injuries, a police spokesman said this morning, adding no charges have yet been filed.

According to a police report, the driver told police he went straight rather than turning where Sumner and Marginal meet around 2:30 a.m., did not realize there was a fence there and so drove his red Camry through the fence and into the harbor.

Boston EMS Incidents reports that, fortunately for the three occupants, it was low tide at the time, so the car wound up stuck in mud, rather than sinking under water.

A lot of people driving extra recklessly around Eastie as of late. A lot of screeching tires, blown stop signs, and speeding.

A guy I was talking to at brunch yesterday showed it to me. I was going to ask him to send you a copy, but my daughter had just gotten back from overnight camp and really wanted to go home and take a nap. I'll see if I can track down the guy and get you a copy. It's amazing. The guy was driving on rims and dug in to the pavement. He went down Marginal to the boatyard by KO Pies, then turned around and went down Sumner.

Hi, where did you see the video? He lost one of his shredded tires in front of our Uncles house.

I heard the crash at 2:26 and turned on the police scanner while I watched fire trucks zip up and down Sumner. The crunch sounded like it was right outside my window about a block from the water, maybe only because that was the window that happened to be open.

Next morning I saw some black plastic debris in the street right in front of my house that looked like pieces of someone else's fender. My guess is drunk fleeing the scene after bashing a parked car, although it could be coincidence.

It was no coincidence. Him driving on rims dug into the cement and it was very easy to track where he had driven from.

I figured as much but tend to hedge against declarative statements on the internet when I'm not 1,000% positive. Just don't have the energy for slapfights with the uninformed contrarians anymore.

After checking the JP facebook thread... Sigh. Of course the plastered driver was able to get out and blunder around under his own power, while his passengers paid the price. I feel for people who make dumb mistakes, but impaired driving is not a mistake. It's a calculated decision, and this guy decided his convenience mattered more than at least three lives. Glad the other cars he struck were unoccupied.
