The MBTA reports workers busy upgrading the Blue Line platform at Government Center recently
Made an interesting discovery in a small, hollow section of concrete that was poured more than sixty years ago. What you see in the photo was found rolled up in a ball. Despite these ghoulish garments, the work at Government Center Station remains on schedule, with the re-opening set for the spring.
A spokesman says the masks were attached to the costumes and adds:
It's like a sarcophagus down there.

it's obvious you bust your @ss to get your readers recent and relevant content...people will live if a picture doesn't direct you somewhere else, at least it doesn't error out or send you to something awful like boston.com ...keep up the good work!
Clarity needed.

Bicentennial costumes of what bicentennial? 60 years ago was 1955.
Did I miss something? What kind of bicentennial has costumes like this?
The only bicentennial I found celebrated in 1955 was Ft. Ticonderoga.

Formally incorporated in 1754: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boston_Marine_Society
I'm intrigued, and thinking more locally, here.
The Masonic Lodge was built by the 1730s, so that's out. Ditto Paul Revere's birthday.
Then there's the Big Quake in 1755
Note that there didn't seem to be a lot going on or being built at the time - probably because of the French and Indian war starting in 1754.

And then there's the possibility that there might not be a spring in 2016, but just ETERNAL WINTER!
Bue Line on weekends
By anon
Tue, 10/27/2015 - 1:25pm
The Blue Line is now running one track only on weekends for an undisclosed period of time. Regardless of what direction you are going in you have to get off at Maverick and switch to the other side. This slows things down considerably. I asked an employee about it and she told me it was so "Government Center could reopen in the spring". I don't recall this partial shutdown of the Blue Line as part of the deal, but I am willing to bet the entire Blue Line will shut down to complete the project as the spring gets closer.
um yeah no

Uh.. remember what's on the lower level of Government Center? Yeah the BLUE LINE.
That part of GC is being re-done also so track closures are to be expected for them to work along along the platform's edge and in the track well.

and they will quietly decide to not reopen the station.
The MBTA has quietly stopped doing what they've always done since 1964 and when asked steadfastly insisted restarting whatever they stopped as "impossible".

riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. Yeah they'll close a major stop in downtown Boston that they've already done millions of dollars of work on. Not.
seriously where do you people get these ideas from? It's time to just say no to drugs.

not right now at least, but the Greeen Line Arborway and Watertown Square closures were both "temporary", so the T has established a precedent. However they weren't sinking millions into glass houses and replacement glass houses like they are in Government Center, so I'm guessing the station will in fact reopen

became permanent because the MBTA management (who obviously were decendants of the founders of National City Lines) didn't want to run the service. Towards that end, they convinced local businesses into believing that return of streetcar service would mean runiation for them, and convinced the environmental lobby into believing that return of streetcar service would cause the earth to fall off its axis.
Two of the most monumentally shortsighted and idiotic decisions the MBTA ever undertook.

If it being a major project and already putting in millions of dollars of work means it won't be scrubbed, how do you explain the talk about the GLX, Crosstown Buses 1-8 stopping at 3, heck if you're counting millions in planning and lawsuits and investigatory committees then throw in the Urban Ring, Red/Blue Connector, Rapid Transit to Dudley, North/South Rail...

The decals the T started positing in stations the last week in September about the grand re-opening say Spring 2016.
Of course, why is the T even promoting the re-opening seven months in advance, let alone posting fancy decals in every station? If only we had some sort of review board to question this type of unnecessary and wasteful activity.
And, judging by the progress (or lack thereof) I can see passing the station westbound every morning, it's highly unlikely they'll make late Spring 2016 at this point.

Yeah you can't go by that. Look at the progress pictures on mbta.com, there's alot of progress. Looks like most of the big work is done, and they've moved on to finishes. And finishes is easy work. Even the replacement glass panels were being installed last week.
I do think March is aggressive, but I do think it'll be open by mid-spring (like April).

Dibs on April 11, April 12, and April 13.
That's because Patriot's Day is April 18, and it would be really handy to have it open before the yearly monsoon of fleet-footed visitors.

I do agree that it will be open before Patriots Day. It would be nice to 'show off' a nice new station to many people who do not normally ride the T.

on the T's site look almost exactly like what I've been seeing passing by on the train.
And they have started to apply some finshes at one end of the Green Line westbound platform - solid white tile. Looks like a glorified mens room.

They've put up lots of that ugly bathroom tile on the Scollay Under platform. It'd be great if it helps it stay clean, but who wants to bet it won't still smell of urine?
