BRA board to vote next week on proposed condos at old gas-station site on Roslindale/West Roxbury line

The BRA board of directors meets Tuesday to decide, among other things, whether to allow construction of a 16-unit condo building at what is now the decaying Weld-American gas station at Weld and Centre streets.

Residents and City Councilor Matt O'Malley say they appreciate the chance to rid the neighborhood of an eyesore, but say the project, which will also include a ground-floor space for a professional office, is too large.

Residents who live behind the parcel in particular say that it will have more of an impact than it might seem at first because it sits on a rise above their homes. Following the last public meeting, the developers agreed to remove a roof deck from their plans.

The board's meeting starts at 5:30 p.m. in its ninth-floor hearing room in City Hall. Members of the public will not be allowed to testify.

What the heck is wrong with a roof deck? It's not like it needs more parking spaces.

These articles never mention that the BRA vote is non-binding. The real vote that matters is the zoning board of appeals.

In this case, it's because they don't need to go to the ZBA - the proposal conforms with the zoning for that parcel.

Knowing the BRA's track record on going against neighbor' and abutter's wishes, this will fly through with approval. Abutter's meetings are a farce and joke.

If abutters don't want meetings to be treated like a farce, they should try having less farcical complaints.

been to a neighborhood meeting where there isn't at least one "crazy" neighbor who you wish would just be quiet. But they never are. It goes with the territory, I think.

The BRA has had multiple meetings for abutters/neighbors to express opinions about the proposal. Each time, the developer has come back with changes. Frankly, I thought the roof deck was a better option than the individual balconies. But the abutters were so very focused; I hope they don't end up regretting having a balcony for each unit.

Everything about the proposal falls within the guidelines of being able to move forward. I hope the BRA does vote to allow the developer to move forward.

My problems with the plan were not actually about the site of construction, but of proposed traffic and existing sidewalk configuration. Each is being addressed by the City - albeit very slowly.

I've seen the city come through with plenty of stupid proposals, but lets be honest that the stupidist thing the city does it restrict building in general. If we could stop spending five years reviewing every single project, we'd be in much better shape.
