Walsh: BPS needs districtwide look at race relations
By adamg on Mon, 01/25/2016 - 1:31pm
The Herald reports Mayor Walsh is vowing an in-depth probe at race relations in the Boston Public Schools system following last week's Black at BLS campaign by black students at Boston Latin School.

What happens
When they find that white neighborhoods are under represented in BPS and have been greatly overlooked for new charter school?
Or what happens when this stupid horse and pony show reveals that the racial makeup of the staff doesn't reflect the student body? Walsh won't go after the Union!
Damnit, anon
Damnit, anon, if you're going to start playing buzzword bingo, you've got to give me a 20-minute head start to make cards.
Joke's on you, though, because "REVERSE RACISM!" is the free space. This one isn't getting you any closer to the matching luggage set.

Off to a great start!

Honestly...
Twitter is the last place I would go to discuss any complex, sensitive issue like this, especially once you have the same characters on there who seem to jump on every issue and try to make things as divisive and inflammatory as possible. Anyone who is already saying things like "I stand with..." on an issue which has barely been explained or explored is creating sides, not taking one.
You think racial issues in
You think racial issues in Boston public schools have"barely been explained or explored"? How many kids do you have in BPS, Im guessing none to have never heard about this.\
You're hilarious.
My kid went through four different BPS schools, including six years at BLS. I was also a BPS student for many years, as were my siblings. My grandmother graduated from Girl's Latin. I'm not--duh--talking about "racial issues"--I'm talking about this recent kerfuffle about #BlackatBLS, specifically whether student concerns were ignored by the administration. And I'll say again--I think that Twitter is the last place that Marty Walsh or anyone should go to have a productive, nuanced conversation about race issues in the BPS.
Sally.....
It appears the students tried to deal with the issue without using twitter and social media, and their concerns were not met (According to them). These same groups will argue that conversations must happen on these networks, because the issues will be ignored and covered up without them.
I don't think it's a bad place to start
the conversation but it's a terrible place to continue it if your goal is to improve communication, better understanding and the honest, productive exchange of ideas rather than snark, one-liners and accusations.
I agree.
But these issues don't always have people involved who want to have an honest, productive exchange of ideas.
wow
They are eating him alive in that thread...
Mostly caulkthewagon
who I first got to know as a Twitter handle during that whole insane BLM freakout after Angelo West was shot after he shot the police officer in the face. It seems to be the same group of Twitter-happy folks who rush to every lit match with a can of gasoline.
About caulkthewagon
I got to know her because she was one of the tweeps who helped stopped the ridiculousness that was the Boston 2024 bid.
I'm not surprised to see that she has a dog in this fight. She's just one of the many people who use twitter as a conduit to get the message out in public to elected officials, other activists, casual observers and the media.
Agreed on the ridiculousness
of Boston 2024 (though I'm of the mind that given the tepid reception city-wide, the bid would've crumbled on its own without the Twitter-verse) but why should anyone without a complete understanding of what's going on at BLS "have a dog in this fight?" Why is it considered a "fight" to begin with and why try to make it one unless you're the Herald trying to sell newspapers?
Without Robin and Jonathan
Without Robin and Jonathan of No Boston 2024, and Chris and Kelley of No Boston Olympics, and Prof. Zimbalist of Smith College, Walsh may well have succeeded.
Walsh didn't pull the plug, the USOC pulled the plug, and they did so because Walsh told them in January during his presentation that there was no opposition. WBUR pegged opposition in January at 33%.
Walsh didn't pull the plug, the USOC pulled the plug in July, but Walsh had a heads-up and got his rush presser done first so it looked like he was running the negotiation and sided with the people on budget and cost overrun guarantees.
Walsh had no reservations about taxpayers taking on budget risk, construction cost overruns and record tax abatements for the post-Olympics Widette Cirle neighborhood called 'Walshtown.'
If Walsh doesn't like the
If Walsh doesn't like the terrible race relations in BPS, he should move. Bad race relations at BPS are a TRADITION. How dare he criticize something in Boston or suggest it could be better.
Everything you EVER write
Is pure knee-jerking!
You do realize BPS are minority majority! And if you didn't here.

You have an error in one of your lists
The "white non-Hispanic" population of Boston is 47%. That also doesn't factor in 2 or more races.
What about Madison Park, Mahty?
Or Walsh can take the initiative to fix our sub par education system. Race is the last thing wrong with our education system. We've got schools that rely on antiquated material, curriculums based on a national scale as oppose to a district, and alot of inner city kids who need support. But yeah, let's all blame race..
Why are you fixated on this?
Why are you fixated on this? So do you attend public race relations related meetings or just constantly post about how you feel violated from all the "racism"?
Oh, it's all clickbait, of course
Because I know people like you just can't resist the temptation to click and leave a comment asking me why I keep posting about this. You don't know how many thousands of extra dollars in income I've made, so thank you from the bottom of my heart. Keep it up!
Oh, by the way, have you noticed that this was a link to a story in the Herald, which has now written about this issue for five days in a row (four with headlines on the front page)? You should go ask them how many millions of extra dollars they've made from people like you.
Acknowledging you post click
Acknowledging you post click and bait, finally. Are you finally becoming a man?
Bigger man than you'll ever be, sonny boy
Now run along, I hate the sound of whiny children when they discover they've been trolled.
Ouch Adam you are so witty.
Ouch Adam you are so witty. And I doubt you are making a high income from posting about race relations and space savers. Cheers
What we need
Do you know what we need? We need a national conversation on race. Wait. Scratch that. We need a local conversation on race. What's that? We're just going to have shouting, protests, and headlines? I'm in!!!! That should fix it!
PS
PPS I can't believe dictating busing from the hills of Wellesly didn't fix all the racial issues in Boston. I thought that was an airtight plan.
