Thieves down with expensive Canada Goose coats favored by BU elites

BU Today reports thieves are targeting the coats, which can run up to $1,300, and are finding good pickings in locker rooms at the campus fitness center - which are not equipped with surveillance cameras. Police note that, unlike iPhones, the coats have no serial numbers.

and can afford it. that is all the reason anybody needs. when i go shopping i don't shop based on somebody elses wallet- i shop based on my own desires and income.

Obviously they can afford it and want it. One questions if they want it due to the fad or if they just find the coat comfortable and would be just as happy buying the same one without the red armband.
These are the sorts of questions which keep advertisers and product designers up at night.

I know someone with a Canada Goose coat (she got it as a gift, lest you worry that I have snooty friends), and she says it really is the warmest coat she's ever worn. Worth $700-$1300? I don't know. Quality? According to her, yes. She wanted it because she knew how useful it would be in the winter. These children may want it just as a status symbol. Who can say.

I love my $200 down hiking jacket, but I only wear it when it's below 20 or it's snowing, otherwise it's too damn hot. These people pay for the patch. They would not pay that much money for 'the warmest coat out there' if it didn't have that giant patch.

But guess what, someone else may want to wear their really warm coat when it's a little warmer out. Maybe they have thin blood. Maybe they grew up in Hawaii. Maybe they just like to be warm. Regardless, some people like nice coats, other like nice cars, others like nice food. Stop bitching about what people decide to spend their money on.

They are of a high socioeconomic background (what many would describe as 'rich'), and have no problem blowing $800-1200. on a coat marketed towards those attracted to a pretentious fad. In plain English, they're 'rich brats'. Not that there's anything wrong with being a spoiled, rich brat. Boston is full of them.

Most likely their parents, freaked out about sending their kid to the frozen tundra of Boston, made sure they had a really warm coat.
That and a t-pass are way cheaper than a car.

People that are so concerned about what other people spend on clothing, cars, etc... baffle me. If you have the means to buy it and it has personal value then I don’t see the problem. But hey, everyone should live like a pauper because you can have a coat just as warm for only $200.

When I was an undergrad we used to play "Spot the Californian" on the street on the first cold day of fall. They'd be in ski boots, down jackets, hats, scarves, and gloves when everyone else was in maybe a fleece jacket at the most.

I'm at FitRec daily and see quite a few of these coats on hangers in high-traffic areas; I was thinking just last week that they were ripe for lifting. Students can get a free lock for a day locker at the gym if they don't have a permanent locker, it takes just a few minutes to pick one up.
Te story reminded me of the young entrepreneur who a year or so ago was selling 'American Duck' patches for $5 that looked nearly identical to the Canada Goose patch. As I recall there was a Cease and Desist order served...

Should not matter how much the coat cost, or how much money you do/do not have, it still does not give somebody else the right to steal your stuff.

Some people have valuable
Some people have valuable belongings stolen from them and U Hub commentors jeer them ? How do any of you casually tossing out pejoratives know that the victims of these crimes didn't work to earn what they have, material or otherwise ? I can think of quite a number of possible expenditures that might make me question a person's judgement or taste. A nice warm winter coat in Massachusetts in February is not one of them. This blog comment space is becoming a cesspool of negativity.

You must not be familiar with BU students. I worked for BU for about 4 years, way back in the 1980s. Even then it was known, in general, as a school for very wealthy kids who did not have the grades to get into what was considered a better school. I don't think that aspect of the BU student population has changed very much. Aside from that, do you really think a college kid at BU is going to be working at a job to make enough dough to afford a $1,300 coat? Perhaps but I think the financing is coming from the Bank of Mom and/or Dad.

As concerns the socioeconomic bracket of those attending BU, in fact, it's more likely to be true than ever. Just look at the tuition.

while you're there, why don't you also look at the stats of the incoming freshman as another user has posted already, amount of need-based scholarships awarded in the past academic years, diversity of the student body, etc.
Looking at the tuition alone is simply a shallow observation, it tells us nothing considering tuition has been on a steady rise in pretty much most 4 year private universities around the country. Considering that Harvard and MIT's tuition for 2015-2016 is not that different, I guess they too are full of rich spoiled kids by your standards.

Well......
This was no winter coat. This was a $1,300 winter coat. That means this person probably isn't on the streets freezing because he or she doesn't have his coat anymore. I'm not going to say I'm happy that some thief or their family who actually needs a warm coat now has one, but I think it is natural for people to feel less sorry for those who have luxury items taken from then than from those who have necessities taken from them.

I know kids who went to BU. These kids did not come from rich families, they worked through school, have debt and were grateful for the education.

Why and When Canada Goose Parkas are a Big Deal
The brand is well loved by people who spend a lot of time outdoors in arctic conditions, and with good reason: excellent construction, great technical performance, and lots of nice features. They are pricey because they are trendy, but also because they are actually made in Canada by workers with good wages and benefits and because they are top of the line in terms of performance.
I know someone who has a jacket that is over 25 years old, survives regular trips through the laundry, and is still warm and very functional (despite the lack of convenient pockets for things like cel phones). However, she lives in Northern Manitoba, where it matters. She bought it after getting stuck in a ditch in her car in a storm for more than a day and hasn't regretted it.
That said, very little of living in Boston, even the past two winters, justifies having one for its technical merit. If you work through the winter on top of Mt. Washington, you are going to want one. If you work outdoors all winter at a ski area north of the 45th Parallel, you might want one. If you are planning an arctic or sub-arctic expedition, they are great for that. Multi-day snowshoeing trek in the White Mountains or the Rockies - sure. Moving to Winnipeg? Might be nice.
