MBTA trains are no different than us - they don't like going out in subzero temps, either. At one point this morning, the T announced "moderate" delays on the Green Line due to "multiple disabled trains." The Red and Orange lines also had delays due to "track" issues. Ari Ofsevit notes the newest cars in the T fleet, on the Blue Line, ran fine - as did the oldest ones, on the Mattapan Line.
The cold proved a problem at Logan, as well. J. Jahn reports:

Around 7am the Orange Line had a dead train at North Station. Waited about 20 minutes and gave up and just had a very cold walk to the office.

any train (or bus) with overhead wires will face speed restrictions once it gets well below freezing, as the wires become brittle in the extreme cold and become prone to snapping.
I once spent an afternoon on a very delayed Amtrak train up from New York in 2004 or 2005 due to extreme cold temperatures. It has nothing to do with the MBTA and everything to do with the metal the wires are made of.

i'll gripe about the MBTA but i'm not going to disregard the causes either. similar to how i would point out a bullshit cause, i'm not going to ignore it if there are extreme circumstances.
when its so cold that its dangerous to go outside- in a place that its not unheard of for it to be 100 degrees- mechanical failures are bound to happen.
