Funny - I thought it looked familiar (it should! I worked on that block for a total of more than 15 years!) But the only building that remains is the Fisk Rubber building. The Century Tires building on the left was Copy Cop for several decades, until it was torn down and replaced by the Apple Store glass box.
Next to the Copy Cop was a gas station, if you can believe that. The old Paris Cinema was also on that block I think. And the building still standing next to the Apple Store was the old New England Music City, a great record store where I bought many classic albums when they were new in the early 70s. Years later it became Zoundz a used record store. Downstairs was the Bulkie, a great deli of the old style. Sometimes hookers would congregate there at night. The place had a lot more character before that bland Apple glass box.
The gas station was actually to the right of the Fisk Rubber building, closer to the corner of Fairfield Street. The Paris Cinema was a few buildings off to the left, where the Walgreen's is now.
Strawberries before it became Zoundz. And one of my favorite haunts on that section of Boylston Street in the early 1980s was Olson Electronics. Olson was a national chain similar to Radio Shack, but had a greater variety of specality parts, and usually at lower prices, than R/S did.
The Strawberries was on the previous block, closer to Boylston and Exeter. Pretty much where the Crate & Barrel is. The square footage of the Strawberries was much larger than the NE Music City/Zounds location. The building where Strawberries was, or right near it, had previously been a record store called Soundscape. It's long forgotten, but it was great.
Boylston St. -- as the previous commenter said. These posts are among my favorite at Uhub -- keep 'em coming! Thank you Boston City Archives for the great work.
This stretch of Boylston was across from the railyards and had a lot of early car-related biz, in fact I think the Century Tire place to the left (Apple Store site) had been one of the first car dealerships. Great exposure as rail passengers and workers went by.
This picture was taken the same year. If you look at the large size you can see the same buildings sort of just left of the center of the photo. From the topic photo you don't get the impression of the chaos you see in this picture.
