Deer rescued at Nantasket Beach

Deer and Massachusetts state trooper at Nantasket Beach, Hull

Neil the roving UHub photographer reports a deer emerged from the ocean at Nantasket Beach this afternoon - possibly after running into the water near the comfort station at the north end of the beach.

State Police kept a close watch - and prevented any selfie situation by keeping people away. At first, troopers were looking for somebody to come tranquilize the doe so they could bring her somewhere safer, but then:

Deer made it to secluded cove on south end of beach. With a police boat escort and fans following on the boardwalk.

Looked like MSP and rangers cleared that area and there's a lot of ground cover close by and plenty of deery terrain nearby so looks like Bambi of the Sea is OK.

First photo belies deer's state. It wasn't chilling on beach. It was trembling and looked very stressed.

Before authorities got situation under control the deer had swum quite a distance and had no safe place to come ashore as crowds were following her along beach.
Looked like she came ashore near ramp as it was only visible escape route or bit of cover to be found on beach.

She got a good rest under protection and then seemed to make beeline for greenery and rocks at far end of beach.

Deer are good swimmers and she probably would have had a great day in the water if it wasn't Memorial Day wknd.

This is completely inaccurate! We were there. The deer was completely surrounded and scared. People were all crowded around on the beach and the deer had nowhere to go but toward the water and looked frightened. The police did NOTHING other than stand there staring at the deer and keeping people from getting super close, but not making them back away. I approached the police and told one of them I am a biologist and if you clear the beach the deer will have a path to exit. He responded by scoffing at me, telling me that everyone had a solution and they had it under control, someone was coming with a tranquilizer dart. It took them over an hour to "solve" it. The solution was the deer swimming super far out off the beach and swimming in the cold water for a really long distance. Rather than the police clearing a beach path for this poor animal, it was forced to swim the entire beach length to safety with annoying swimmers chasing it. I'd hardly call the police boat an escort. No one helped this poor animal escape, I'm sure they made it worse, scaring it to swim further out. I can't believe this representation. The police were far from heroic in this case.

Not everyone who claims to be a biologist at the beach is one.

I completely agree with this individual and her comment. I was there as well. I first noticed the deer while my partner and I were eating at the Ref Parrot. It seemed to just "appear" in the water!

It was painful and upsetting to watch. The state troopers did very little (perhaps that was their role?). Evacuating the beach to allow the deer to roam free and figure out its travels outside of the bitter ocean would have been a better solution. Unfortunately that did not happen.

Animal control and the Department of environmental services were no where to be found. One woman had enough sense to swim behind the deer to push her toward the beach (this worked).

Clearly the deer was frightened and hurt but after 3 hours of in and out of the water, it bolted back in the water at the ramp and headed for the south end of the beach the coast guard watched and did nothing.

The long swim took over 35 minutes. The deer manages to get to the rocks and on land. The department of environmental services had finally showed up. We left after 25 minutes of them standing around. At this time I am still wondering what happened to the deer.

Thank you Danielle.. Im that woman who had enough sense.lol The cops got paid all day to sit there and do NOTHING but threaten me for helping the deer. Them state police just dont know what they were doing.. If it was was of their dogs or other officer out there struggling I guarantee they would have wanted my help then.. But hey thats what I get for trying to do my job off the clock..

up
Voting closed 0

Thats not true.. I was the woman in the water that dove it and swam and forced the deer to get to safety. It was also me who told the cops that were NOT doing anything at all that the deer was going through hypothermia.. And was going to die.. They are not ment to swim from 9 am to arkund 5 pm when I got to him.. And this police in this picture is the one that threatened to arrest me for helping get it in to shore.. Them dumb officers got paid alll day for doing shit.. But they threatened me.. Someone who was worked with wildlife and knows what I'm doing.. So ALL THEM STATE POLICE DID WAS KILL THAT POOR ANIMAL.. THEY DIDN'T HELP AT ALL..

The deer didn't know you were there to help.

YES BC I DID THEIR JOB FOR THEM.. ALL THEY NEEDED TO DO WAS CALL AND GET ANIMAL CONTROL.. BUT THEY COULDNT EVEN DO THAT RIGHT... SO I MADE THEIR JOB EASIER. GOT THE DEER TO SHORE.. BUT THEN SINCE 9 am THEY STILL DIDNT CALL ANYONE.. AND JUST FYI.. NOBODY WOULD HAVE THESE PICTURES IF WHAT I DID WAS SOOOOOO TERRIFYING... THE ANIMAL COULD HAVE DROWNED .. THEY CAN SWIM BUT NOT FOR 8 HOURS... SO SAY WHAT U WANT. I DONT REGRET WAT I DID.. SO ENJOY THE PICTURES YOU HAVE OF THE DEER ON SHORE BC OF ME.. YOUR WELCOME

How do you know animal control wasn't called? Did you check with Troop F or the Revere police to see who was dispatched and when? If you knew anything about animals like deer, you would know that someone swimming or even going near them for any reason would probably cause more stress than if the deer waited there and kept its heart rate at a normal level.

So yea, thanks for killing that poor deer you murderer!!!!

And no, a State Trooper's job is not to stress live animals out, unless you know the State Police policy on animal control, which you don't.

I think you meant Hull police and some other barracks.

Man, though, do people scream at you all the time like this woman did here?

up

Yes. All the time. They scream and yell and fight.

When we are called to a house, we aren't usually dealing with the most rational people. No one calls the police when they accidentally made too many chocolate chip cookies and they don't know who to give them to. They call when there has been a complete break down of societal norms.

Imagine the oness that call repeatedly.

This picture was taken shortly after animal came ashore. The first pic in the post shows the deer protected and fairly isolated by MSP after they responded.

It was an unusual event that ended well. What heroics should have occurred? It's a wild animal on a beach not a baby in a burning building.

Talk of clearing the beach is crazy. First the beach was packed. Second there is a sea wall and/or riprap along the whole beach, EXCEPT where deer finally came ashore.
Were troopers supposed to clear the beach and somehow corral the animal up a ramp or flight of stairs?

Then what?

Close Hull Shore Drive and Nantasket Ave to all vehicular and pedestrian traffic?
Close the side streets and G. Washington Blvd. so deer can make it to Worlds End in Hingham?

Sheer nonsense.

Also that area is well developed. I can't think of a safe place for a deer to hide along that whole stretch and I know the area well.

Deer are good swimmers and this animal didn't look hurt in the least. It swam at a good clip to a safe refuge when it went back in the water.

Woman who chased it out of water should have left it alone and it probably would have made it there a couple hours quicker and may have prevented the stressful situation on the beach.

MSP aren't wildlife control and it's certainly not their fault that those personnel weren't available quickly.

Finally the boat stayed fairly far away from animal, probably to avoid frightening it further. It did use its loud speaker to warn people away. Looked like a few kids tried to swim behind it towards the end of its swim. They were warned off and stopped.
The sensible thing to do when you encounter any wild animal is to simply leave it alone. MSP and DCR Rangers managed to ensure a huge and excitable crowd did so.

I didn't see every event that transpired but did follow deer's situation down the beach over the course of a few hours.

The situation was well handled by authorities.

by all the people and being the center of attention. It just wanted to safely escape the situation. When they get very anxious and stressed they just freeze. This is where the 'deer caught in the headlight' phrase comes from.

The person claiming to be a biologist is crazy. The MSP did a fantastic job securing the beach and the deer eventually made a safe retreat.

The so-called biologist's plan to evacuate the beach would have been disastrous and caused unneeded panic.

Let the professionals of the MSP handle the situation. Great job MSP.

up
Voting closed 0

Actually, I happen to know that that "Crazy" biologist who I was with at the beach is a professional Biologist with a PhD from Boston University and her specialty is Animal Behavior research, that is clearly more of a Biologist than the ignorant police that probably doesn't know more than high school Biology and can not accept any feedback or advice from a professional. They would rather feel safe with their egos, like this article shows.

up
Voting closed 0

They have a specific procedure while they wait for the proper authorities to arrive. You're right they're not trained wildlife biologists; it's not part of their job. That's why they secured the scene. It's also not within an academic's purview to coordinate evacuation of a beach or allocate public safety resources. of course the trooper scoffed at them...they sound like a nutty and completely full of themselves.

up
Voting closed 0

An academic expert on animal behavior KNOWS what needs to be done, that Biologist wasn't of course going to give orders to the people to evacuate, BUT was telling the police that that is what they should do if they wanted to help the animal, the police can easily give an evacuation order, but this proves the police's actual FULL OF THEMSELVES attitude, because it challenges their idea of "Power" by a more knowledgeable voice giving them advice. . If you all people who insult that swimming woman who was trying to help the deer get to shore, please ask yourselves what were YOU doing to help in the meantime while she was putting herself in danger in order to help this animal.... Weren't you making it worst by crowding and watching the animal and taking photos to put on your facebook and show your friends? Im sorry but if you weren't actually trying to help nor were self-aware of how your acts and presence could have affected the life of the animal, don't say anything. ALSO, if you were not there, your opinion of what happened means nothing in this case.

... is what happens when a large mass of humans (aka wildlife with cars) are told to leave an extremely popular public beach with one way out.

As said above, Nantasket is a tricky place. It can be a tricky surf on a storm tide because there are not a whole lot of ways out.

I DONT CARE WHAT YOU SAY.. THAT DEER NEEDED A BREAK.. AND I COULD TELL SHE WAS GIVING UP.. WHEN I GOT HER TO SHORE SHE WAS LICKING HER WOUNDS AND LAID DOWN AND WAS GOING THROUGH HYPOTHERMIA AND HER BODY WAS STRESSED BEING THROWN AROUND IN THE WATER FOR 8 HOURS. I DO KNOW THAT THEY CALLED THE ANIMAL RESCUE BUT THE COPS SAID THEY WERE CLOSED... THERE'S ALWAYZ A PERSON THATS ON CALL FOR SITUATIONS LIKE THIS... SO I WANTED THE DEER TO GET TO SHORE AND ATLEAST GET A BREAK FROM BEING THROWN AROUND AND SWALLOWING WATER AND EVENTUALLY DROWNING.. YES DEERS CAN SWIM BUT THEIR FEET ARE NOT WEBBED SO ITS HARDER AND THEY ARE USING MORE ENERGY... SO YOU CAN SAY WHAT YOU WANT.. BUT DONT BE MAD THAT A PERSON THAT ACTUALLY WORKS WITH WILDLIFE TRIED TO HELP THIS DEER... THE COPS DIDNT DO ANYTHING BUT YELL AT ABSOLUTELY EVERYONE AND THREATENED ME.. SO PLEASE YOU WEREN'T THERE FOR THE WHOLE THING.. YOU CAME AT THE END AFTER I ALREADY HELP THE DEER GET TO SHORE.. SO PLEASE SHUT YOUR MOUTHS BECAUSE I DONT CARE ABOUT YOUR COMMENTS... I WILL DO IT AGAIN IF THIS EVER HAPPENS AGAIN.. I WOULDN'T CHANGE A THING EXCEPT FOR ALL THE COPS THAT JUST STOOD THERE LOOKING DUMB I WOULD CHANGE THAT.. THEY SHOULD HAVE WENT AND DID THEIR JOB.. NOT SIT THEIR AND BARK ORDERS AT PEOPLE THAT ARE TRYING TO GIVE THEM SUGGESTIONS.. IF THEY CANT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT THEN WHY WERE THEY EVEN THERE.. BC OF SITUATIONS LIKE THIS.. WHEN A RANDOM LADY HELPS PUSH THE DEER TO SHORE BUT THEY GET CALLED HERO'S.. THEY TAKE CREDIT FOR DOING ABSOLUTELY NOTHING...THATS WHAT THEY ALWAYS DO...SO IF YOU WEREN'T THERE FROM THE BEGINNING YOUR DUMB COMMENTS ARE IRRELEVANT. SO THANKS HAVE A NICE DAY. IM DONT WANT TO BE CALLED A HERO AND THATS NOT WHY I DID IT.. IM AN ANIMAL LOVER.. AND I WILL SAVE ANY ANIMAL BIG OR SMALL WHEN EVER I GET THE CHANCE..

Judging by that and your grammar and punctuation, I would say that your average state trooper might be better equipped to handle an errant deer.

No, it's not how someone who is basically an animal sociologist thinks they are a vet. It's how did someone get a PhD without being able to write.

Thanks for the support, man.

up
Voting closed 0

FYI: The PhD biologist is not the person with the grammar mistakes, maybe learn to read?
Also, An animal behavior specialist is not a vet , BUT knows why animals behave in certain ways and therefore what is best for them to do in situations like this. She knew the animal was scared and that if people didn't back up that the animal would have swam further and deeper in fear of the crowd and probably risk his own life.

up
Voting closed 0

The other one got easily conflated with the PhD, since she was shouting loudly, both here and I am guessing at Nantasket Beach. Still, I would rather have an animal control person running the scene, since in a place like Hull I would bet they were trained specifically on how to deal with deer.

up

So what are the chances that at least one of the people concerned about the deer on the beach hit and killed one with their within the last few days and the only concern they expressed was for possible damage to the car.

The police academy offers very little (if any) training in animal control. For wild animals, the rule of thumb is always "leave them be" unless they are obviously trapped or injured. It seems to me that this case was handled well. The Department of State Police doesn't have animal control and I doubt the Town of Hull has anyone with deer training coming out on a holiday weekend. Even the Environmental Police, who have a boat station down the street in Hingham, attend the same police academy as the locals and Transit. They have specialists in the Large Animal Response Team (LART) but this wasn't a bear or moose nor would they be tranquilize a deer in the water. I remember a panicked 911 call for a "seal on the beach." A senior officer responded with me and radioed back, "Yes, there's a seal on the beach, where he should be. All units clear." A job well done by MSP.
