My ancestors died in the Civil War too on the union side. Flying the confederate flag is spitting in their face.

Today is the anniversary of the bloodiest of Civil war battles. The houses are flying both flags. The historical context is entirely appropriate.

Just like it's a mere coincidence that the Dome of the Rock happens to be a top the site of the Temple. Etc...
Sorry, when I see people flying the confederate flag, the more likely explanation is dog whistle racism than arbitrary commemoration of a civil war battle.
I wonder what Civil war battle this guy is commemorating?

A 'not welcome here' sign

I sometimes teach a course in leadership in coastal North Carolina, where it's pretty common to see the flag of the confederacy flying. One particular class was roughly half black and half white, and we talked for about an hour on the topic. The overwhelming consensus of my black students was that they view the flag as a very clear 'blacks are not welcome here' message and avoid people and businesses displaying it. The white students were surprised at this for some reason.

If the Confederate flag honors Southern Americans
By anon
Fri, 07/01/2016 - 11:45am
who fought in the Civil War what is wrong with flying the German flags of WW1 and 2 when they want to honor their ancestors? For obvious reasons flying a flag with a Swastika would be roundly condemned. Yet a flag that represents the defense of slavery, a social system that also constitutes a crime against humanity actually has defenders?
The argument that the Confederate flag represented all Americans fails because the premise is that the Southerners were Americans as in citizens of the United States. Once Southerners seceded they were Americans only in the sense that Canadians were Americans. By seceding they proclaimed that they were citizens of separate states. Whether Mr. Lincoln and the Union Army acknowledged the existence of a separate nation is irrelevant. The Confederacy had set itself up as a separate nation and then began a war against a the United States by attacking Fort Sumter.
To fly the Confederate flag dishonors the men and women who suffered because of the traitorous actions of men and women who supported a social system that was one step less in its horrific tragedy than outright genocide.
Good for them for flying the flag

While we should all be grateful for Republicans like Lincoln for abolishing slavery, people should be able to fly any flag they want. In fact in 1987, then-Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton signed Act 116, reaffirming the state’s language that honored the stars on the Arkansas flag as commemorating the Confederate flag.
I often socialize with African-Americans. It is beyond funny when white liberals begin trashing Donald Trump, assuming the blacks forget the tawdry, racist history of the Democrats/Clintons. One of the African-American women (extremely attractive) waits for the white liberal nonsense, then informs she is a Trump donor. The reactions are priceless, especially in Cambridge!
As Hillary would say, "I don't feel no ways tired."

...the African American woman is "extremely attractive." Because as you know there are many ugly nappy-headed ho's out there, but this is one of the good looking ones. Thank god for those few slave owners who took one for the team and laid down with some of the chattel in an effort to improve the race.

Rights act the Southern Democrats began a mass exodus from the Democratic party to the Republican party. The Republican Jesus, also known as Ronal Reagan, embraced Southern racism as did GHWB 1 and every Republican Presidential candidate since ensuring a solid Southern red state, white Republican majority voting block. With only slick Willy bucking the trend. Yeah history is really neat.

Why bless your heart, Fish! I do declare, socializing with African- Americans! Where in the hell-fire did ya'll learn to such a thing?
Now do tell me, sir, how does one go about socializing with those people if one was so inclined?
Is like you just walk up on them and say: "Ya'll folks mine if I hang out for awhile and just socialize a bit?" Or do you just kinda s-l-i-d-e slow like up to them and wait for them to ask you a question?
And while we're all on the question, is this something you just go and do when the spirit moves ya or do ya'll half a special day of the month you call "Socializing with the African-Americans day?"

the 1960s happened, and Republicans became the party of racism, and the Democratic Party the champions of civil rights.
You're right: the Democrats have an awful pre-1960s history on race. Republicans have their most recent 55 years to be ashamed of.
Do you really believe that bringing up Lincoln's memory is a helpful comparison for the modern GOP? Then I have a course on how to get rich selling real estate I'd like to sell you.
