Curt Schilling: Why do Jews support Democrats?

Curt Schilling: Jews so stupid, amirite? No, really, why are they so dumb? he asks.

The way the Left depicted Schilling here is really dull. Schilling makes a valid point: why does a religious group continue to promote a party that allowed Iran to hold nuclear programs despite being so hellbent on wiping out Israel? He's not being anti-Semitic. It's more or less of a frank realization but these days, anything from the hair on your chin or free speech, will offend any Leftist PC nun. By the way, I'm not a big fan of Schilling either after the Rhode Island scheme.

Barry Soetoro might agree with you, but, well, Schilling (and ahab) may have a valid point.

Its like 2008 & 2012 all over again.

All thats missing is a few Rasmussen polls showing McCain or Romney in the lead and Karl Rove having a melt down over Ohio.

I thought it kind of sounded like Curt might have been asking out of a place of sincerity. However, I'm of the opinion that if he was really curious to know more, he could have chosen a better time and venue to ask a Jewish person he knows personally with more left-leaning views the same thing without putting Tapper in a seeming "gotcha" type position.

is assuming that all Jews, especially American Jews, are automatically supporters of Israel.

I don't know many American Jews who want to see Israel wiped out or anything like that, but I know plenty who have serious reservations about and criticisms of the Israeli government and its actions.

Schilling can't seem to wrap his mind around the concept of someone who is culturally and/or religiously Jewish but doesn't automatically agree with the politics of Israel. This isn't a tiny subtlety or fine distinction in some obscure aspect of Judaism, this is a reality for a large number of American Jews.

You have to go back to Israel for the rapture to happen. Get on with it.

Are you implying the Trump trusts Jews more than he trusts, say, the Irish?

So, what would Barry Soetoro say about the Jews and Israel? About the Palestinian question?
Please have Mr. Soetoro explain to us how hemmed in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard will be when they have the disadvantage of a couple of nuclear weapons.

We agree. His game commentary wasn't too stupid. He was too stupid to realize that as a public figure and ESPN employee he couldn't spew his bullshit w/o consequences. And if I recall correctly he had plenty of chances to just do his job and not be an ignorant opinionated douche on social media.

Nope, the only evidence comes from his meme infected brain.
Just one example. Foreign aid to Israel has been about the same under Clinton, Bush, and Obama. At approximately around 3 billion dollars a year, and about a third of the total foreign aid budget.

Just sayin...maybe a short temper...

"she called Paul Fray, her husband's campaign manager at the time, a "fucking Jew bastard".
Now, I don't want to libel the lady, after all, she's under a lot of pressure and kind of frail, but that lefty bastion of excellence, The Guardian has a bit to say on it:

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2000/jul/18/uselections2000.usa

"Those present at the inquest into the defeat were Mr Clinton, his then-girlfriend Hillary, his campaign manager Paul Fray, and Mr Fray's wife, Mary Lee. Neill McDonald, a campaign worker, was just outside the room and claims to have heard everything. "

And for those in the Nile (heh, pun. Get it? denial?): Fray took a lie detector test and passed it.

For those that claim Fray isn't Jewish, but Baptist...well, absolutely right. He's 1/8 Jewish. That, apparently was enough for Hillary.

On the other hand, maybe she's just a spiteful, hateful bitch that hates everyone.

I was talking about her husband's campaign manager.
So, tell me, do you still have your "Palin is a _unt" tee shirt? Clue, the missing word is a four letter word meaning "a woman".

The missing letter is "A". Aunt.
Anyway, there have been a lot of stories written about how Madame Secretary is the worst human being on the planet.
Don't search for it, just live in your own little world.

This somehow became an "issue" in her campaign for the U.S Senate against Rick Lazio. Remember, after Rudy dropped out for "health reasons"? Guess what? Hillary won. Because she was infinitely more qualified than Lazio. Because she was and is a great public servant. And because nobody with half a brain believes she is an anti-Semite.

But please, go ahead, keep trying to justify your original anti-woman slur with an even worse one. You're making my argument better than I ever could.

Curt Schilling wouldn't be my first choice but he raises a valid question and I would support him over the Fake Indian any day. As promised, Israel will likely be blown off the map under John Kerry's disastrous Iran nuke deal, supported by Warren, so Jews voting Democrat are sealing their own fate. When Obama had the leader of Israel visit the White House, he was made to exit via the Dumpster door, overflowing with trash. Shameless. Kerry himself is the son of Jews named Kohn, but quietly changed to an Irish name for political purposes. Kind of like Caroline Kennedy Schollsberg dropped Schollsberg during her embarrassing Senate campaign. The faux, shocked reaction by the African-American reporter introducing the piece was more comical. CNN is the same network that called blacks rioting in France "African Americans" even though none had ever been to America. Just black Frenchmen rioting but CNN couldn't say that. What a joke CNN has become.

up
Voting closed 0

Alt-right is being used to label any Republican to the right of Charlie Baker. Meaningless term.

up
Voting closed 0

First, I doubt Baker has ever been seriously referred to as alt-right.

Second, it's not a meaningless term. It's how a specific group of people refer to themselves and their beliefs. I think they're abhorrent, but they're absolutely real. It's like saying pro-life is a meaningless term, or progessive, or any political category.

Seems you're just trying to deny reality or deflect criticism. How very Trumpist.

up
Voting closed 0

They weren't talking about calling Baker alt-right. They said anyone who falls to the right of him. But a more accurate portrayal would be anyone to the right of Neocons like Bill Kristol, Karl Rove, Dick Cheney, et al. That's where you start getting into alt-right territory. Even Bill Kristol, of all people, made a push to defeat Trump this election in the "Never Trump" movement.

What a horse's ass. To me at least, he knows exactly what he's doing campaigning as "Aww shucks, I'm not PC, I'm just a regular guy asking a question" candidate which is the only strategy he has to win a senate campaign in MA. The barely concealed smug expression on his face is telling--he was probably waiting the entire interview to spring this one. The only credit he deserves is taking Tapper by surprise and trying to get him to say something he can point to in a Senate campaign about the liberal media bias. Thankfully Tapper doesn't take the bait. I feel as though the shocking things said during this presidential campaign give a mouthbreathers like Schilling a chance to ride in its slipstream and say pretty much anything that makes him look like a populist as long as it's not outright racist or rapey. Unfortunately, I think we'll be seeing more of this in the next few years.

that forbid anyone in the news side of the house from publicly endorsing any candidate or party, though of course voting is allowed and an entirely private matter, as it should be. The same rules generally don't apply to the business side of the house. Apparently the former managing editor of the Washington Post (not sure on the detail, heard it on BUR Friday morning) also did not vote, in order to keep a clear heart in terms of journalistic integrity and not picking sides, even in the privacy of the mind.

I think it shows an amount of integrity to put aside your rights in order to further democracy by providing the best impartial information and assessment that you can.

up
Voting closed 0

If you've ever read Freakonomics, they talk about how economists don't vote (or, at least in presidential elections), because they view it as a futile exercise, for the most part (where it usually doesn't come down to a single vote so they can feel good about sitting it out, or something close to that). But, as a journalist seems a bit different. Of course, if there were a means of publishing a journalist's voting record it could, in fact, prove some sort of bias. But, I believe that sort of record is considered a private right, as far as "privacy" and the constitution are concerned. As a journalist, you've likely researched a lot of, if not all of, the facts enough to the point where you can vote in good faith and still provide accurate journalism to your readers.

Then again, I'm not a journalist, so I don't try to talk myself out of such civic practices. It'd be interesting to hear them pressed on the issue further.

And in both cases pigeonholing a reporter on his ethnicity isn't the best thing to be doing.

I just think it's oblivious and totally like Schilling to be asking, paraphrasing, "Shouldn't all Jews believe in a party that strongly supports Israel" when there's a lot more to being Jewish (and a Jewish person in America, or anywhere else in the world for that matter) than a single foreign policy. Curt's kind of alluding to he knows what's best, or thinks he knows what should be best, for Jewish people to do when it comes to politics and voting. NBC sat on the Trump tapes for decades and they only come out after the conventions. Plenty of mutterings about Trump's excesses with women too about a year ago, but only in full force after the conventions.

Why? So that now when some knuckle-dragging rube complains about border and immigration enforcement or the like, you can tar him as a sexist, racist, comboverist argle-bargle blah blah blah.

Same thing here. Now if you question the Dem's middle east policies, you're an anti-Semite, racist, drunk, whatever.

up
Voting closed 0

As MC points out, you would maybe have an argument to make if the GOP hadn't literally trotted out a fascist who hates minorities and women as a presidential candidate. Advocating against him isn't a symptom of insidious liberal bias, it's the bare minimum response any literate person who took 10th grade civics should have as an American. The fact that tens of millions of people support him suggests that public education policy has badly failed, and maybe it's just time to write off a whole lot of people as lost causes. Clutching at your pearls and insisting on the absolute necessity of journalistic integrity, in the face of the single most dangerous man to ever seriously vie for the presidency, suggests that you are one of them.

Trump's about to take a historic beating, but if you survey your friends for what they want for dinner, and 7 of them say "Thai food" and 3 of them say "let's kill and eat a drifter," democracy has technically prevailed, but you still have a big problem.

up
Voting closed 0

and comprehension of time was (will be?) a close second.

I didn't say Trump can't be called out on his bullshit because 'impartiality', I said the liberal media's blatant bias created the conditions under which a

You libs like to accuse the right of deliberately undermining government and claiming that it doesn't work. Well, right back atcha: the liberal media has deliberately undermined journalistic integrity, a key pillar of civil society, creating the conditions for alternate news and views, and now claims that civil society is broken. "As MC points out, you would maybe have an argument to make if the GOP hadn't literally trotted out a fascist who hates minorities and women as a presidential candidate."
**Trotted out? Are you kidding me? Did you not watch any of it? Trump beat everything the GOP could throw at him. They tried like hell. Even now, there are goppers that won't back their Presidential candidate.

"Advocating against him isn't a symptom of insidious liberal bias, it's the bare minimum response any literate person who took 10th grade civics should have as an American. "
**Why? I'm calling simple BS on that one.

"The fact that tens of millions of people support him suggests that public education policy has badly failed, and maybe it's just time to write off a whole lot of people as lost causes. "
**I see. If they don't agree with you they are 'neck breathing mouth beards', neanderthals, racists, misgoyinewhateverthehellthatwordis, and we must revamp the educational system because it isn't fucked up enough already.

"Clutching at your pearls and insisting on the absolute necessity of journalistic integrity, in the face of the single most dangerous man to ever seriously vie for the presidency, suggests that you are one of them."
**Sorry. Trump is a creation of the progressives in this country. Note I didn't say 'liberals'. Classic liberals would be shocked at what this nation has become. The political class is a kleptocracy, running up insane debt and not giving a damn. Politicians leave office and become lobbyists for everybody in the corporate world that wants to bend (or write) a law their way. One of the candidates for President has wikileaks coming out every week that would have destroyed any candidate that wasn't as manipulative as her.

"Trump's about to take a historic beating, but if you survey your friends for what they want for dinner, and 7 of them say "Thai food" and 3 of them say "let's kill and eat a drifter," democracy has technically prevailed, but you still have a big problem."
**Nope. Look, a lot of this country is not doing as well as you. Bad for them. Their jobs went away, probably never to return, they are scared of the future because they see nothing for them. They want jobs. They want a decent life for their families. All they see from you is a palpable disdain. They aren't stupid. They know how you feel about them. They voice complaints and get called racists, neck beards (oh, I've seen that one here once or twice), mouth breathers, all kinds of insults.
They believe in fixed results because they've seen it. Andrea Mitchell (MSNBC!!) alluded to the Kennedy-Nixon 1960 Chicago fix. Last week. Wow. So, the FBI is investigating (for what it's worth, we've seen the email brooming) a bunch of voter 'irregularity' cases, but hold out no hope for justice.
All the people west of 495 see is corruption and greed.

Trump got a standing ovation in a church in Detroit. The election is not over yet...

Alt-righters want to believe what they do because they are largely nationalist if not also racist (you can clutch your pearls if you'd like, but I'd venture a guess there's a decent correlation there). So when something doesn't fit to their worldview, it's not surprising they say to hell with Occam's Razor and just lazily call the "MSM" biased, untrustworthy, and flat out liars. It's a lot easier to do that than it is face facts and reality that doesn't line up with the way you think the world should work, according to you (generally, not you specifically), and the way it actually does. And it's why when I double down on people who claim corruption I always get nebulous responses if not totally vapid ones. Quite honestly I don't think your retort offers much out of line from that, either.

So, here we are; QED. It's why we have the Becks, the Breitbarts, the Jones', and so on. They offered people narratives that sounded appealing in theory but had little basis in fact, but boy do people want to believe.

Someone doesn't buy into my world view, therefore they're probably a racist homophobic sexist superstitious nut. If that's not the wall of a lambda/10 echo chamber, I don't know what is.

Facts are facts. Sacred cows aren't.

Open borders or closed borders aren't a physical law or a fact; they're a choice. So is trade policy. So are tax rates and labor laws. So is just about everything else the self-described "progressive" set likes to put its favored versions of on a pedestal with the Bill of Rights, the Declaration of Independence, and the Ten Commandments.

Nobody running for president, no mainstream politician, nobody. Seriously, as soon as you drag out that tired boogie man, your argument loses any credibility.

(and please don't bother trotting out the latest Trump lie, twisting Hillary's quote about open energy markets. It's not the same thing)

don't trip over yourself.

At least one politician running is advocating (in public at least) for closed borders and is getting a ton of crap about being a racist for it. And if I said we should build the wall and deport the illegals, you'd tar me as a Trump-loving racist too.

The sitting President tried (and failed) to use executive authority to water down immigration enforcement for a certain segment of illegal aliens. And was hailed as a progressive hero for the effort.

For the record, I'm for free trade and easy immigration with reasonably wealthy places and absolutely against free trade and easy immigration with not-so-wealthy places.

What wealthy country did you come from?

Was it wealthy at the time?

If not, why the new rules for newer people?

Oh, wait ... you were different because you are special!

has spent the last 60 years promoting and exploiting the exact same kind of racism, misogyny, homophobia, religious bigotry, xenophobia, and science denial. They're just embarrassed now because the new crop of candidates has traded the old dog-whistle for a bullhorn. Trump and Schilling are direct descendants of everything the GOP has stood for since the early Sixties.

More recently, the Republicans have benefited from the construction of a right-wing propaganda bubble that makes stupid people stupider.

no one could possibly believe in free market economics or limited government. That's just the fig leaf excuse they give in polite company so that they can indulge their white-hood fantasies at the ballot box.

Of course one can support the Republicans' "Strangle government in its crib" and "Don't mind the free hand of the market hovering around your ass, it knows what it's doing" policies and not be a bigot.

It's just that ordinary working- and middle-class people used to grasp that the GOP only truly works on behalf of point-oh-one-percenters and big business, so of course the only way to get them voting against their own economic interests was to whip up their fear and bigotry. Been working pretty well for Republicans since the Civil and Voting Rights Acts passed.

But Trump gave away the game, and will go down in flames. He'll hang onto his hardcore 37% all the way to Trump TV, taking boot-licking toadies like Hannity, skinheads in blue blazers like Steve Breitbart Bannon, and scary nutjobs like Alex Jones with him. And the right-wing propaganda bubble will sink to a new low of fact-free conspiracy-mongering and loathsome incitement of hatred and ignorance.

By that same logic, the Democrats have been the party of "strangle American business in its crib" and "Don't mind the very visible hand of state bureaucracy tightening around your nads...we're experts" ever since they stopped being the party of segregationists and klansmen.

See, I can fling shit too.

Bill Clinton led the largest economic expansion in the last 50 years with big government policies. Sorry if that's inconvenient to your baseless ranting. And let's not forget that his tax policies also availed us of the largest budget surplus in decades and included the only multi year national debt reduction since the advent of the national debt.

In case you're wondering Bill Clinton is and was a Democrat.

Bill Clinton was forced into adopting welfare reform and a balanced budget by a Republican Congress. He'd've run away with his big government otherwise.

Where are the awesome gains from today's Republican Congress? Where's the budget surplus, where's the Medicare and Social Security reform?

If I have selective memory you've got selective cognition.

Obama hasn't sat down with Congress since 2009 when he told them he was going to dictate terms so tough shit. Doesn't make for good leadership. Clinton and Gingrich got along a whole hell of a lot better than Obama and Boehner did or Obama and Ryan do.

Plenty of blame to go around. Hillary might be better...but she's no Bill. Trump...hahahahhaa.

His tax increase in 1993 increased taxes on a lot of folks. It was the 1997 tax decreases that actually led to better economic times.

"The Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997 (Pub.L. 105–34, H.R. 2014, 111 Stat. 787, enacted August 5, 1997) reduced several federal taxes in the United States.
Starting in 1998, a $400 tax credit for each child under age 17 was introduced, which was increased to $500 in 1999. This credit was phased out for high income families
The top marginal long term capital gains rate fell from 28% to 20%, subject to certain phase-in rules. The 15% bracket was lowered to 10%..
Roth IRAs were established, permanently exempting these retirement accounts from capital gains taxes.
The act permanently exempted from taxation the capital gains on the sale of a personal residence of up to $500,000 for married couples filing jointly and $250,000 for singles. This exemption applies to residences the taxpayer(s) lived in for at least two years over the last five. Taxpayers can only claim the exemption once every two years.[1]"

Yes, he was a Democrat. He signed it. Good, but I wouldn't begin going all Monica on him for it. It was a bill backed by all Republicans and about 80% of the democrats.

Right-wing media makes people stupider on economic issues, climate science, women's issues, gay rights, voting rights, and Taliban-like assertions that Fundamentalist Christian values should be enshrined in law.

If our great experiment in democracy crumbles, you can lay a big chunk of the blame on a right-wing media empire that profits from making people feel good about ignoring basic facts, history and science. They have been huge Trump enablers, Fox News alone giving him a couple of billion dollars worth of free media exposure, to say nothing of the hate and ignorance promulgated by Breitbart, Drudge, AM hate radio, et cetera, et cetera.

Maybe a nation with half its citizenry living in a bubble of frothing ignorance and willful stupidity deserves its decline into fascism. I'm not feeling optimistic about our prospects given Trump's inevitable post-loss move into creating a media empire fronted by unspeakable assholes like Steve Bannon, Sean Hannity and Alex Jones.

Part of my horror about Trump is that he clearly is not driven by ideology, any deeply-held beliefs. He just has this infantile id that a lifetime of privilege has led him to believe deserves to be endlessly satisfied. He doesn't give a shit about his supporters, or America, or any global good. He just craves adulation, will do anything to curry the love of the screaming masses to feed his juvenile, unquenchable ego. He's a monster, a giant sucking Little Shop of Horrors Audrey. The planet can go up in a nuclear fireball, as long as enough idiots at the end of things are responding to his relentless bellowing of "Feed me!".

But it seems highly unlikely that the GOP in MA would let Schilling become the nominee if they want any chance whatsoever of reclaiming the senate seat.

The state GOP will hold primaries, unless they want their base to turn on them. The same bunch of people who gave Trump a win in the MA primaries are still out there, merrily polishing their gun barrels and reading Breitbart stories about how Hillary is already organizing the FEMA death camps. What makes you think they won't vote for the dumber, more anti-Semitic sports hero over an establishment Republican?

1) The party will recruit a more palatable candidate in the Scott Brown/Charlie Baker mode
2) Those voters who supported Trump have (hopefully) learned a valuable lesson by now
3) The whole Rhode Island mess is close enough and recent enough to detract significantly from the now-distant sports hero thing.

Scott Brown supports Trump. Charlie Baker emphatically does not. Not sure they are of similar mold.

That did not stop Trump from getting nominated. Or Bush Jr. for that matter. So not holding a lot of faith that any future candidates would be affected by similar foibles.

He totally screwed Rhode Island with 38 Studios and he just generally sucks. To be fair, his question did appear somewhat sincere but he's a sketchball. Schilling for Pres? God help us all.

At 67, Elizabeth Warren should retire and enjoy her golden years, especially since Native American life expectancy is shorter than other Americans. As for Schilling's comments, the question has been asked for years, why do Jews continue to vote Democrat? He said nothing that hasn't been said before, including by many Jews themselves. As for Trump TV, I'm amazed it hasn't happened already, ratings would be off the charts. Trump is filling sports stadiums and Hillary can't even fill an elementary school auditorium. With the likes of Megyn Kelly, Britt Hume, Chris Wallace etc. attacking Trump, Fox has become more of the same. Great to see Sean Hannity now consistently leading the ratings, the only person at Fox who has been strong Trump.
