Talk about timing: Boston holds racism forum

WBUR reports on Mayor Walsh's racism forum yesterday - which had actually been in the works for a couple of years.

The city of Boston has a lot of work to do to truly address its racial divisions - that's a clear sentiment that emerged from many people taking part in the opening session of a city-wide dialogue on race organized by Mayor Marty Walsh.

You can watch a video of the forum.

I have to give the mayor and the organizers credit for discussing the third rail of politics namely race. Does anyone know how the poor immigrant woman is doing after being brutally beaten at Savin Hill station last week in a violent hate filled attack?

invite any racists?

I mean if they were going to have a forum on women's issues, it would have been a scandal if there were no women speakers. If they were going to hold a forum on LGBT issues, it wouldn't be right if everyone talking was a cisgendered male...

Have fun.

Well, you weren't there, but you WERE invited, so I guess the answer is yes.

From Boston Herald report on Walsh's racism forum

-- Earlier this year, the Brookings Institution released a report that found Boston tops the list of the country’s most unequal cities.
Next year, Boston will release a resilience strategy, which will include policies to address the city’s race issues. It will also connect race to issues including climate change and housing, he said. --

Connecting climate change to race issues.. hmmmm..... I am beginning to see why Boston/Massachusetts went so overwhelmingly for Hillary and why Boston tops the list of the country's most unequal cities.

That must explain why most red states are poverty shitholes and why Massachusetts is one of the healthiest places in the US for children, elderly, etc.

But I'm beginning to wonder if constantly talking about our differences helps or hurts. Seems like the more we point to our racial/ethnic/religious differences the worse it gets.

Maybe if we just had biracial forums on solving things like drugs, poverty, health, education etc. We might figure out we're all in the same boat and focus on real problems, not blaming everyone "else" for our problems.

And keep in mind for the next 4 years, one big reason you have to say President Trump is because a lot of white people, especially men, feel like not only have you forgotten about them, but you think the mere fact that they are white and male means they don't have problems.

How can white men feel forgotten when they are on almost every channel, are head anchors on all major new programs, own almost all US news stations. They run almost all Fortune 500 companies, are overwhelming in control of every almost all government agencies and Congress. Basically they control almost everything.

And honestly, if white men are feeling forgotten in this white male controlled country, how in the world do you think non white males feel?

until you shoot yourself in the ass with your own identity politics.

One white man is not all white men. Just like one black man is not all black men. Just like one woman is not all women. Just like one Jew is not all Jews. We've been saying this at you for decades. You still don't seem to understand.

The biggest issue about RACE especially in the city of BOSTON is that people especially people in position of power in diferent sectors in the city, do not feel like they make an impact.

Every time theres a mention of racism by a person of color BLACK OR LATINO ESPECIALLY, they are told to STOP COMPLAINING. How do you move forward, if you cant have a a GENUINE conversation about a current issue?

Im WHITE and i feel embarassed when i come on a website like BPD, UH, or NEWS SITES and there reporting a shooting in the inner city and there are LARGE NUMBERS of BIGOTS whom i can easily assume are WHITE and not be wrong. Theyre commnting on a another persons death as if, they were the law of the land. Going as far as to looking in to the DEAD PERSONS past , in an attempt to justify the victims DEATH. The CLEAR DISREGARD for another life, especially those of BLACKS & LATINOS is the reason why we as a city cant TACKLE THE ISSUE THE RIGHT WAY.
