from the mark wahlberg historical fiction movie Wicked Sleddin', Kid
Sleddin'?
That's for babies. Big boys skidhop/bumper jump!
Gotta have a scene where the guys rob a bank and then grab onto a snowplow and skid on their boot soles to get away!
As for the date? It may be that 1958 storm that is 11th all time or the 1960 storm that is 10th all time.
You're both way off base
This would clearly be a Ben Affleck film.
Can't be the blizzard of 1978
because by then, Esso had become Exxon.
In a classic car only colony
Those cars are vastly older than what was around in 1978.
Codman Square?
My guess is Codman Square with the Esso gas station in the background.
location
Morton Street, looking east, toward Norfolk Street.
Morton Street by Norfolk
Morton Street by Norfolk Street . 58 Chevy at curb, Plymouth Valiant, maybe in drive lane.
ha ha!
I know the answer because I saw this posted somewhere else..
I'll give it a few hours to see if people get it before i post it :-)
Morton Street looking towards
Morton Street looking towards Norfolk Street and the District 3 police station
Wow, you nailed it
Here's the view today. Looks like the Esso has become a "Wave". I'm surprised to see that there was such a huge highway sign in the middle of a neighborhood back then.
I was wondering that, too
That big sign on the left, facing away from the camera, looks like it belongs on a freeway, announcing the next exits.
'58 Chevy narrows it down
March 6 or 7, 1960 it is!
Not a highway sign
But the back of a pair of billboards. See the enlarged photo linked in the City Of Boston archives post below.
Beat me to it
Current view.
Yup
You're right. However, Swirly should have stuck with 1958.. as it was 1958
(My apologizes to Boston City Archives.. saw this posted by DoB a few hours ago)
B3 is the other way though
Blue Hill Ave is behind photographer, right?
Anyways, I nailed this one too, and I never get them. That school is a pretty distinctive building.
School at 801 Morton Street.
School at 801 Morton Street.
School building is still there
Anyone know what happened to the large brick building on the right?
Think it used to be the
Think it used to be the junior high school that served the Jewish kids from Mattapan , not sure what it is now.
Thanks for info on the possible junior high
It's a memory now. I've been driving Morton street since the 80's and don't remember it.
Think the junior high was
Think the junior high was used as a Hebrew school too,not totally sure. That area . of course , went through major changes , so some places are just faint memories seen on the path of Morton street that leads to Gallivan boulevard, and the land of many parishes,
Large Building On the Right?
That was in the mid-70's called the Pauline A. Shaw School annex for the newer (well 1930's) Shaw School across the street (not pictured). I do remember it being in tough shape in the 70's. It was previously known as the Roget Wolcott School and has to be a late 1800's construction.
The building was torn down in the mid 70's as were the similarly built Mary Hemenway School at the corner of King and Adams, the Minot School on Neponset Ave, and the Gilbert Stuart School where the Lower Mills Library is now. The Wolcott School lot remained vacant until Walgreen's was put up in the early 1990s.
The school on the left was a Hebrew School for years (because Mattapan was a huge Jewish working class neighborhood then until everyone left for Randolph, Milton, Newton, and Sharon) and then was city used for a while. It has been a SDA school for probably 20 years now.
Here is a better picture of the school:

What is an "SDA school" ?
Some sort of charter?
Picture
Beechcroft St. in Brighton. The Mary Lyons and Garfield Schools. I attended both.
Nevermind! I spoke to soon.
Nevermind! I spoke to soon. Need to wear my glasses more.
The answer...
Thanks for playing everyone!
For those of you who guessed Morton Street, you are absolutely right! The photograph is not dated but was included in the Mayor John Collins records, so we believe it was taken in the 1960s.
