Cambridge City Council to consider Trump impeachment

At their regular meeting on Monday, Cambridge city councilors will hear reports on improving the audiovisual system at the city senior center and whether the city can reinstall a stop sign at the intersection of Green and Hancock streets, vote on a request from the Cambridge Arts Council to string banners across Mass. Ave. and JFK Street for an upcoming open-studios weekend and decide whether the council should go on record in favor of impeaching President Trump.

A proposed policy order would have the council resolve:

That the City Council call upon the United States House of Representatives to support a resolution authorizing and directing the House Committee on the Judiciary to investigate whether sufficient grounds exist for the impeachment of Donald J. Trump, President of the United States, including but not limited to the violations of the Foreign Emoluments Clause and the Domestic Emoluments Clause of the United States Constitution.

The proposed order, sponsored by councilors Marc McGovern, Jan Devereux and Leland Cheung, lays out the case for impeachment:

WHEREAS: Leading constitutional scholars and government ethics experts warned Donald J. Trump shortly after the November 2016 election that, unless he fully divested his businesses and invested the money in conflict-free assets or a blind trust, he would violate the Constitution from the moment he took office; and

WHEREAS: On January 11, 2017, nine days before his inauguration, Donald J. Trump announced a plan that would, if carried out, remove him from day-to-day operations of his businesses, but not eliminate any of the ongoing flow of emoluments from foreign governments, state governments, or the United States government; and

WHEREAS: On January 20, 2017, Donald J. Trump took the oath of office and became President of the United States; and

WHEREAS: From the moment he took office, President Trump was in violation of the Foreign Emoluments Clause and the Domestic Emoluments Clause of the United States Constitution; and

WHEREAS: These violations undermine the integrity of the Presidency, corruptly advance the personal wealth of the President, and violate the public trust; and

WHEREAS: Our democracy is premised on the bedrock principle that no one is above the law, not even the President of the United States

The council meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. at Cambridge City Hall.

but i don't think this is a particularly good idea

the city council can stand by the people of cambridge with its actions more so than words, imo. the man got a pitifully small minority of votes in cambridge. just keep being a solid place to live that is accepting of all people

but hey i don't live in cambridge, those are just my thoughts if my own city was considering the same

blatant emolument violations, multiply-corroborated stories about Russian interference in the election, placement of Russian intelligence assets in the Cabinet, and churlish incompetence of such breathtaking scope that we're collectively reduced to likening the president to a toddler without a nap who's been told he can't watch Dora The Explorer... and they haven't breathed a word about impeachment. But I bet a strongly-worded letter from the People's Republic will kickstart the proceedings.

Shouldn't have to say that upfront, but we are living IMO through another McCarthy witch-hunt type era.

I'm tired as F hearing about Trump and his team collaborating with the scary Russians. Fr what I've seen, he and they did nothing unusual in this regard, and, in fact, there are Democrats, like HRC, who have done the same and worse with Russian companies and the mainland China, both the PRC communist government and Chinese companies, which exist, of course, with the blessing of said government.

What is unusual is the sheer loathing the elite, both Republican and Democratic, 'progressives' and multinational corporations, the elite in academia, business, government, have for Trump.

and, in the context of X City Council, i do not care. at all.

you know what I want MY city council to worry about? the landlord of the vacant/under construction lot that doesn't maintain the sidewalk during snow storms despite the fact that per the bylaws that particular section MUST be cleared out

since I told the police about it and nothing happened and i called the town and nothing happened, again, I suppose perhaps they'll have better luck if they DID venture into national politics.

what a few city councilors from the Peoples Republic think. Talk about attention seeking, but then again it probably plays well into their base of social justice comrades!

I'm glad the Cambridge City Council has solved all the city's other problems and has time for this nonsense. I'm sure none of the council members has any sort of inappropriate financial relationships with their Lords, Masters, and Mistresses at the universities and high tech companies which essentially rule Cambridge through influence.

Love you all but I don't think anyone commenting here should be judging how anyone else spends their time.

Look, I think the resolution is not a great idea. It's City Council's job to run the city, and this is off-topic at best. Besides, everyone knows Cambridge is liberal, so this doesn't tell anyone anything they don't know.

On the other hand, this is a nonbinding resolution. This is the equivalent of the city council publishing a letter to the editor, not the city council actually impeaching anyone.

And Cambridge does have a long tradition of sternly worded nonbinding resolutions about international and national policy. It's about as significant as naming an official city chocolate bar, but then again, if they wanna name an official chocolate bar, get it over with and let's hear from the traffic department about that new crosswalk.

..then what is it called when the congressional GOP passes a bill to repeal ACA (Obamacare) 70 times when they know the president at the time (Obama) will not sign it but once they have a president who will sign, doesn't? An incompetent harrumph?

I reacquainted myself with the chain of command in the US Federal government.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_presidential_line_of_succession

After Cheeto, we'd have Pence, then Ryan, then apparently Senator Orrin Hatch (not Turtle after all), and then I believe it would be the head of Exxon aka the Secretary of State, who "never wanted to the job in the first place".

That's OK, Rex. I haven't forgotten that "corporations are people, too" and it's been noted how exhausting your find your current position is so whoever is up for the job at Exxon I'm sure will make a *WONDERFUL* leader for America.

Although I think given the list of the above, I'd rather have Rex then the rest of these potential replacements.

Just cracked up at the off-handed way you mentioned "Cheeto". That's awesome!

I can understand resolutions supporting particular groups. I can understand resolutions condemning violence. Moments of silence for random world events. Resolutions standing in solidarity with groups. What I can not fathom is why a City Council would waste its time yelling into the wind about Donald Trump. Complete waste of time.

If the leadership of our larger cities (and Cambridge is one of the larger cities in the US) begins expressing support for impeachment, then that builds political pressure on our representatives to make it so.
