Pilotblock noticed this sign on a tree in an alley off Pembroke Street in the South End today.

hmm, where was that 311/citizen connect person at
that was complaining about the smell of marijuana? is this perhaps some sort of clever misdirection?
Pot and skunk smell
I never got that marijuana/skunk correlation. Pot does not smell like skunk.
pot skunk smell
not all but some weed smells very skunky.
Have you been around much growing pot?
When cannabis flowers, it gives of a distinctive skunky smell. It's not as noticable once it s dried and processed, but fresh plants smell VERY skunky.
I have the right to not
I have the right to not answer that question. I'm pretty sure it's a trap...
:)
Pro tip:
Tomato juice is messy. Massengill works better, and is not messy.
For what it's worth, tomato
For what it's worth, tomato juice is an old wives tale. You will just smell like skunk _and_ tomato juice.
Yup
Thankfully I never had to test it, but I was prepped for such an event with:
1 quart hydrogen peroxide
¼ cup baking soda
1 teaspoon dish-washing liquid.
Using water, wet your dog’s coat, work the solution through the fur. Let the solution sit for about 5 minutes (good luck - some dogs don't like just hanging out in this state). Rinse thoroughly.
The only thing that will
The only thing that will break down the skunk odor are enzymes. There are very small amounts in tomato juice, but it takes a much higher concentration to eliminate the odor.
I *have* had an issue where a skunk sprayed into a vent in my basement. That smell doesn't leave easy, and olfactory fatigue makes tracking down the source a futile event. To those who are shocked to see skunks, I say "welcome to the city". Not sure if the correlation is strong, but the neighborhoods with skunks tend not to have many rats, so it's six of one and a half dozen of another.

tomato cans
I read the headline too quickly and thought it was another Shaughnessy column.
Same smell.
Same smell.
Great neighbor, though
Great neighbor, though, as I'm sure dog-walkers -and every other neighbor for a few blocks- would agree.
PS- Kinda brave nailing that sign to the tree, though.
Voice of Experience
White vinegar (pretty cheap), diluted with a little water if you like, works well, same reason tomato juice (and Massengil) works, acetic acid does the work. Not perfect, and if you handle your sprayed clothes etc. you have to start over. I got skunked as a kid, got into mom's car, 2 months later the car still smelled.
Prevention is better than cure
All these supposed remedies for getting skunked, and no suggestions to avoid the problem in the first place? Number 1, remove food sources. Stop putting out edible garbage, pest-proof dumpsters, etc. If the pickings are better elsewhere, the skunk will move on.
good idea
ill also enforce these rules for everybody else i live near
Worth Harming the Tree?
Hate it when people nail notices into the trees..
