Angry tough talker smashes beer bottle, attacks man with it in Fort Point bar, police say
A guy asked to stop talking trash to a woman at a Summer Street bar reacted by getting enraged and smashing a beer bottle with which to stab the requester last month - after first getting on a stool to confront him and then, after the man briefly subdued him, biting him in the chest to free himself, a Boston Police detective told the Boston Licensing Board today.
It was the lowlight of an unusually fighty October in Boston bars, which also saw a woman punch her ex in the head in a South Boston bar, a bouncer at downtown bar begin swinging a pair of scissors and trying to fight off police, a loud couple starting a brawl at a concert and a woman charging at another woman at an Allston bar before being taken down by a bystander.
According to BPD Sgt. Det. Kenneth O'Brien and the victim himself, the trouble at Lolita Cocina and Tequila Bar, 253 Summer St. began around 9 p.m. on Oct. 19, when a guy, later identified as David Fernandez, 32, of Dorchester started being obnoxious to a female friend of the victim.
The victim said he asked Fernandez to leave her alone. In response, Fernandez got up on a stool and started demanding to know if the man realized who he was and added "I'll stab you in the head!" the victim said. Fernandez then punched him in the left side of his head. The victim quickly got the better of him and got him in a hold, locking Fernandez's hands behind his back.
But then Fernandez freed himself by biting the man in the chest, the victim said. Fernandez grabbed a beer bottle, smashed it and began slashing the victim. The victim said the only reason Fernandez missed his neck was because the woman whom the guy had earlier been harassing managed to grab the Fernandez's arm, diverting the broken glass to the victim's forehead instead.
O'Brien said that Lolita staffers moved in quickly and managed to subdue Fernandez until police arrived. O'Brien said he refused treatment for a possible head injury by an EMT who also arrived on the scene - and then threatened to sue police for not taking him to a doctor. O'Brien said that Fernandez yelled at them he would have them all fired and that he was a higher up in human relations, and, well, the cops should know who he and his father are.
"Lolita staff performed admirably" in dealing with the situation, O'Brien added.
Addressing Lolita's attorney, Dennis Quilty, board Chairwoman Christine Pulgini said "You should have a list of people who should just not be allowed in establishments, and he should be number 1 on the list."
Ferndandez was arraigned the next day on one count of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and two counts of assault and battery, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.
Also this morning, the board heard:
- Around 11 p.m. on Oct. 14, a man suffered a broken nose when he was head butted in the face by a guy he had accidentally bumped into on the way to the men's room at Empire, 1 Marina Park Dr.
- A couple started a brawl on Oct. 11 at the Paradise, 967 Commonwealth Ave. They were escorted outside and refunded their money the next day after they claimed three women started the trouble.
- A woman wound up face down on the ground outside Tavern on the Square, 161 Brighton Ave. in Allston around 1:10 a.m. on Oct. 6 after getting into a fight with another woman that was broken up by a man.
- A woman walked into the Sports Connection Bar and Grill, 560 Dorchester Ave. shortly before closing on Oct. 8 and upon seeing the man she'd broken up with the month before sitting at the bar, went up to him and punched him in the face.
The board meets Thursday to decide what action, if any, to take on these incidents.
Innocent, etc.

The perpetrator, a former
The perpetrator, a former local hockey player who goes by the name Happy Gilmore, was quoted as saying about the broken bottle: "Oh, uh, I was just looking for the other half of this bottle...and there's some of it, and there's some of it right there, too."
The Who
Pete Townshend, of The Who said it best in 1978…
Who are you?
Who, who, who, who?
Who are you?

Who are you?
Who, who, who, who? (I really wanta know!!!)
Wow. No other substance
Wow. No other substance brings out violence and stupid behavior in people more than alcohol. And it's legal!!
Cocaine
I take it you didn't live through the Cocaine era.
Amazing work by the Board....
The police state the that bar staff performed admirably in dealing with this jackass. Yet the Board Chairwoman still thinks it reasonable to chide the bar with an impossible demand.
This board is a joke.
We need a reality show for this
One where the Board Chair and Dennis Quilty run a bar together.
OK, now I'm curious
"demanding to know if the man realized who he was"
said " he was a higher up in human relations, and, well, the cops should know who he and his father are."
Who are they??!?
Oooh, human relations
He might have the power to indicate whether you've taken the sexual harassment training course.
At least everyone knows who David Fernandez is now—an asshole prone to violence. Maybe someone should make him talk to someone in HR about that.
Does anyone actually know who
Does anyone actually know who this David Fernandez dude is? Is his father someone "important"?
Neighborhood
It's Fort Point Channel like when the residents here want their own Resident Parking program unlike South Boston's RPP.
They post on Facebook
On the South Boston Community pages when it's convenient for them to report their scooter has been stolen and be on the lookout. Fort Pointers, post on your own community page after all you aren't living in South Boston.
"Wait, you mean you're David Fernandez? THE David
Fernandez, 32, of Dorchester? Oh my goodness, sir, please step right this way so we can get you a massage and a glass of Champagne.
Naah, just kidding: you're a no-account nobody from nowhere. Happy new year to you: IN JAIL!"
Fantastic Suggestion...
..Addressing Lolita's attorney, Dennis Quilty, board Chairwoman Christine Pulgini said "You should have a list of people who should just not be allowed in establishments, and he should be number 1 on the list.".
This should be done for all bars, in every neighborhood in Boston.
Well, given how many bars ...
Quilty and his firm represent ...
Bars already ban people like that
I assure you that the state's involvement in such a non-transaction is wholly unnecessary.
