Faced with a deluge of complaints from the Hub, the food writer who said a new Wahlburgers would let Californians "eat like a Southie" has apologized for the gaffe, but not without adding:
Although in all fairness Southie does sound like a person and not a place.
Via the Globe.
How "Oval Office" of them.
She could have used "Southron."
They should have said "eat like a Masshole" We can't argue with that.
...that Massholes eat somewhat differently depending on the part of the state. Eastern Mass people, for example, are a lot less likely to have had the experience of fried dough with maple cream, which is perhaps the grand ultimate junk food.
Southie is pretty much of the Capital of Massholedom. We take our orders from there!
Southie works as an adjective. Although they'd still have the problem that it's entirely the wrong neighborhood for an article about the Wahlberg clan.
Eastern Mass drivers are the ones who earned the name Masshole. Not people from other parts of the state.
An apology that comes with an "although" is not an apology.
And, no, Southie does not sound like a person.
We had a South Dorm at my college, people who live there are Southies. It works.
Your use is more colloquial and speaking about a dorm thus it works better. In regards to saying someone is from somewhere such as a town and/or city, better to say, I am from South Boston or wherever. Using clearer language, in that instance, means less misunderstandings.
If you don't know, I can see that it might (if you base it on ending-vowel sound).
is worse than the original article:
"Southie" is the correct term for anyone from South Boston. Anyone saying that's not, like that bow-tied bumkisser Spencer Buell, is lying. My Grandfather & my Father were proud Southies. My Grandmother was from Dorchester, which was a pit then & still is, but being from Dorchester does not make you a Southie."
Dorchester kids are called 'Chesties'.
I remember when I was a kid and us Millies (Mission Hill) got into a jam with the Westies. We were expecting a bunch of little terriers but that didn't happen.
Actual Hell's Kitchen Westies showed up. We had to ask the Parkies for help.
This sounds like a scene from "Neighborhood Formerly Known as the West End Story".
TBF, never put THE in front of ever road reference as well.
If you actually were offended by that, you need a hobby stat.
He's from San Jose, right? So that makes him a "Jose"....after all that IS a name.
he, and all others from San Jose, should be "San Joses". But there are a lot of them, and very few of them are saints.
Wahlberg is a despicable person, I wish we had someone else representing "southie food".
I will never understand peoples fascination with Southie. Is it that green sweatpants are considered formal wear? The fact that until 5 years haute cuisine in Southie came from a convenience store? That the neighborhood pastime is complaining about parking?
Someone’s had their full glass of haterade this morn!!
Stop trying to understand it and just accept it. I sense a bit of jealousy and envy.
All is right in the world. lol
Have a fluffernutter on the back porch of your 3 decka and chill out.
Nobody got hurt and it just makes them look dumb.
