Very surprised Lolita opened in the basement of that Summer St building. How do they not get flooded on a regular basis?

I walked down there - they are below Summer St., but higher up than you would think. They also have the wall, it is down a ramp to the surrounding flood zone.

I also took a look at the doors - they are set up to seal out the water if necessary.

Due to the snowy weather, I carpooled with the Mr. this morning.

I very specifically warned him to park in the garage above level 2, not the lot!

Tide's in ... dirt's out!

...going to build it on piers?

Pilings?

It was a wry comment on the increasing frequency of flooding in that neighborhood. So...building on a pier, aka a raised structure that extends over water.

I think anon knows that and was pointing out the fact that piers are built on pilings.

Piers, pilings, whatever. I was thinking of a picture of a building that I saw recently, where the lower levels kinda...aren't. They're just massive pilings or piers or whatever you want to call them. It was an interesting design.

Fill in the channel and build on it. Problem solved.

Considering most of it has been filled in over time is there really any reason not to do this at least up to Summer Street? You'd have land for housing, increased transit and road access into seaport (no need for northern ave bridge replacement). Is there an environmental reason or just cost?

There are at least five stormwater outfalls on this part of the channel.

It drains a lot of downtown.
