Headline
The headline here doesn't help. There's a whole bunch of different dogs that fall under the terrier label. I was picturing something like a Staffordshire terrier. After following the link it was clear that a cat sized dog was killed which doesn't seem like such a shocking piece of news.

When I think of a terrier, I think of a little thing. The shocking part was that one of the dog's owners was right there when it happened.
They aren't afraid of humans
See wikipedia for complete listing and descriptive circumstances of coyote attacks on humans in the U.S. The overwhelming majority have occurred in California but several here in NE and in Nova Scotia, where the last lethal attack on a human (adult female) occurred in 2009. Adults and children have been attacked, and a striking number of cases do involve the presence of domestic animals.
Familiarity with humans' passivity has dissipated their fear. Makes for sobering reading in the wee morning hours!

Safety in Numbers
These creatures have adapted to killing deer by teaming up.
Sounds like they are applying the same techniques to getting dogs.

Terriorists and Chasers
A I noted in the other post, coyotes know that some dogs will chase them. Like my neighbor's Jack Russell terriorist. They will lure the dog into a chase and then the flanking group will attack.
Terrorists are bred to do this ... to chase things.
However, some coyotes tried this with another neighbor's pibble, but she laid down a perimeter and stayed to guard her people. Not all dogs do this, so it is best to know your dogs preferences.
This is an important dynamic to be aware of ... perhaps the coyote populations have taken note of the off leash recreation trend?

Ohhh, reading it again, I assume you meant terriers? Makes much more sense. To your larger point, that's pretty smart on the coyotes to come up with.

Yes, I think she meant terrier when she wrote terrorist. I assume a "pibble" is a Pit Bull.

Although it is a bit redundant.
The Jerk Russell does try to terrorize my Maine Coon, but she knows that white dogs can't jump. He did get more wary of her after she perched on a stone wall that she knew that he couldn't get up on, taunted him into barking and snapping at the base, then peed on his head.
Meanwhile, I can't bring myself to call sweet Sally a pit bull. Not with that permanent smile and ever ready kisses! She's the best behaved dog on the street.
Terriorist is a common nickname for Terrier
Spelled either Terrorist or Terriorist, it is / was a term of endearment for the owner of a terrier to demonstrate the... terror they inflict upon the household. In the same way a parent would describe a rowdy child. It was more common before 9/11 but I still hear/see it from time to time.

Like when potential landlords wanted to know what kind of dog I had, and I told them "Alsatian," so they wouldn't react like I had a German Shepherd. Which of course, I did.

Bitches in heat
Out in California, it was a regular thing for coyotes have a bitch in heat ramble through the neighborhood to get horn dogs to follow them back to the pack to become a meal.
