Great update. Saved me five minutes! Totally worth the subscription price.
Who needs bridges?
Is the Mass. Ave bridge work critical? Since the Longfellow should be coming back fully in a couple of months, couldn't MassDot wait until the other major bridge was fully functional before shutting down a second bridge?
Different bridge. This is the
Different bridge. This is the Comm Ave overpass, which has been in need of repairs. They found asbestos and had to do weekend remediation work to stay on schedule to be done for Marathon.
Not the Mass Ave bridge
This construction is on the overpass over Comm. Ave. The Mass Ave (Harvard) Bridge is open, there's just a detour as you travel on Mass Ave through Back Bay once you get into Boston.
This is not the Mass Ave bridge over the Charles River
This is the small bridge over the Comm. Ave. underpass in Back Bay.
As long as we're on the
As long as we're on the subject, when will the Comm Ave underpass repair work be complete? It seems like it's been under repair for somewhere between 18 months and 2 years. I'm sure it's only my cynical nature but I can't help but wonder which official's brother-in-law got that contract.
Yes, it's your cynical nature
Yes, it's your cynical nature.
Looking at the presentation packages and update they've put out, it seems like they're on or close to schedule.

They do some of these bridge replacements by spreading out prep work - foundations and retaining walls and ummm... technical stuff... - in low-impact installments. That (and using prefab pieces) lets them do the maximum-disruption stuff (like closing Mass Avenue to demolish and replace the bridge deck) in the minimum amount of time (a long weekend).
If I read it correctly, this weekend's closure was some sort of necessary prep stuff, and the demolition/replacement will be in a couple of months.
The current work to stabilize
The current work to stabilize it and remediate asbestos is complete as of this morning. Replacement will happen in May, after Marathon.
Will Marathon run through the underpass
or stay on the surface this year?
