He soars like an eagle - after staring down at a photographer at Jamaica Pond

Eagle at Jamaica Pond

Erik Pettaway reports he was walking his dogs around Jamaica Pond on Jan. 30, near where Perkins Street and Francis Parkman Drive intersect, when:

I saw what I thought was a big Hawk. When we got to the tree it was on I looked …and sure enough there it was in the tree 20’-25’ above us. Beautiful Creature.

A fuzzy bunny is adorable. The MIT coyote is adorable.

This majestic eagle is looking at you like you owe it money.

Or her, whatever. But the local church holds an "adoration", which I assume they all sit around a statue and "adore" it. Good enough for God, good enough for Eagle.

p.s. the female raptors are the larger badass ones

First, the fact that this eagle is even around is a big deal, considering that they were nearly extinct when I was a kid.

Second, he/she looks like a bad Mutha, know'm sayin? Keep the small pets and children indoors....

....yesterday about 5pm flying west past the north side of Mission Hill then north over the hospitals. It was high in the sky and seemed to be riding a thermal for a bit.

Can't we please just look at some cool nature pics of an eagle flying around and doing it's thing in JP without having to think about politics? Pretty please?

Exciting to hear of all the eagle sightings throughout MA! I actually saw one flying around the Acton/Littleton line one night last week, too, and snapped a quick cell phone photo- it was my first time ever seeing one of these majestic birds in the wild. Hopefully a good omen of things to come...

No eggs yet this year but both adult eagles are spending time at the nest. Camera and microphone operate 24/7.

Last night I wondered if there was a larger size of the picture available so I did a Google Image Search on the bottom photo and it came back and told me that there were no other sizes and
"Best guess for this image: beak". I thought that was pretty amusing, as though doing the same thing with a person's portrait photo would come back with "Best guess for this image: nose".

Thanks!

The main reason I wanted the biggie last night was to be able to say hey, look what was at Jamaica Pond and just turn my laptop around to show my wife from across the room.

I bet this is one of the Newton Eagles (Go, B.C.!) along the Charles River who moved to the city to gentrify J.P. and cause so-called lesser raptors to leave for more affordable territory.

The kids gotta move somewhere, y'know?

What a majestic-looking eagle! He's beautiful! It would be sad if these birds became extinct. Let's hope that doesn't happen.

in the United States, they're rapidly making a comeback. I think they'll be OK, although with a population bottleneck there's always the increased future risk of disease, since their gene pool became so small.

(Note that DDT is still *produced* in the US, last I heard, and used in some other countries -- wreaking environmental havoc there, and destroying other species at least as well-loved as our bald eagles. So we've got a ways to go.)
