Brighton could get its first legal BYOB restaurant

A sushi place in Brighton Center goes before the Boston Licensing Board on Wednesday for permission to let customers bring in their own wine and beer.

If the board grants approval, customers of Asahi Sushi Bar, 418 Market St., could bring in one 750-ml bottle of wine or a 64-oz. bottle of beer.

The restaurant is only the fourth in the city to apply for one of the BYOB licenses, introduced last year as a way to help smaller restaurants in the city's outer neighborhoods. The first restaurant to get one of the $400 annual licenses, Seven Star Street Bistro in Roslindale, has since gone out of business.

The licensing board's Wednesday hearings begin at 10 a.m. in Rm. 809 in City Hall.

Place is run by one of the nicest couples who will ever prepare your lunch/dinner.

Agree 100% with Will. This couple is exactly why we should have more expansive license opportunities. Run a great small business (maybe 500 sqft?) on a corner desparate for them, and shouldn't have to shell out 6 figures to stay competitive. Great win for the City and Brighton if this goes through.

We'd have far fewer vacant storefronts in Boston if BYOB was the default status and not a special permit only allowed in certain areas.

So I had personally hoped it would be MDM Noodle, but this is welcome. Will have stop by there.

Also, do we have to bring a growler, or could we purchase for example 3 20oz bottles?

Or a smaller bottle, but either way, just one bottle.

So we'll know Wednesday if they got it? And when it will take effect?

Asahi is excellent sushi at great prices. Better quality fish than many places that cost much more. It'll be nice to be able to have a beer here.
