Boston firefighters responded around 8 p.m. to 31 Mercer St., for a two-alarm fire that started on the third floor and spread to the roof.

The Boston Fire Department reports one person on the third flood was rescued from the flames and taken to a local hospital. Another resident and three firefighters also required medical attention, but none of the injuries are considered life threatening, the department reports.

The fire was reported knocked down around 8:25 p.m.

The cause of the fire, which did an estimated $800,000 in damage and displaced five people, is under investigation, the department says.

I'm a Dirty Old Bostonian and it was always a "Triple Decker" in my neighborhood (Dorchester Lower Mills, where we had a few.)

Nautical as in the clipper ships

It's always been known as a "Triple Decker".

Me mom was born in mine over 100 years ago.

Back in the day, it was an excellent investment, live in the first floor and collect the two rents above, to pay the expenses and the mortgage. Many were heated by the stove in the kitchen and fireplace in the parlor.

A cold water flat with a dumb waiter in the rear staircase for sending up the coal from the sheds located in the front of the cellar. That's why there are three windows in front bricks, for coal delivery from the Coal & Ice man. You would put a large green card in the middle window showing what you wanted delivered. Hence, the origin of the refrigerator being referred to as the "Ice Box".

"Ah, that's a grand life, living off the pig's back" as they said in the old country.
