Eileen Murphy spotted this thing parked (head in, of course) at East 5th and K streets in South Boston today. Looks to be an Estrima Biro, from Italy.

How cute!
I didn't realize golf carts were street legal. This might be practical for puttering around in town, but I can on imagine the terror-inspiring experience taking that little beeper on the highway would be!

1. It has a plate and what looks to be an inspection sticker. Mirrors, seats, doors, wiper(s?), lights, presumably seat belt.. why can't it be legal?
2. It's probably a fantastic vehicle for puttering around small, urban spaces. It is obviously not meant for highway use.

Limited Speed Vehicle, LSV

It qualifies as an LSV. It is highway-restricted. It can be plated and driven around legally. It requires a license.

You can take that up with the owner, the manufacturer, and the fucked up state laws we have for vehicles that aren't cars.
The state just keep making new designations and ignoring reality and leaving gaps between designations (it sure isn't a LUV, trust me). For now, basically the registry takes their best guess and then you get pulled over by some numbnut cop who doesn't know the laws and starts handing out "justice" to let the courts sort it out because our legislature is crap when it comes to keeping up with technology.
Interesting.

Almost 16k for a car that maxes out at 45km/h ~ 28mph?
I don't think you have to worry about the highway in that thing, that can't be an option.

To take that vehicle on the highway in Massachusetts, or, according to the state law regarding low-speed vehicles, on any public way (except to cross) with a speed limit greater than 30 mph. State law prohibits operating that vehicle at speeds in excess of 25 mph as well.
I don't know if Boston parking regulations permit parking perpendicular to the curb even if the vehicle is short enough to do so without blocking the travel lane(s).

the city of boston speed limit is 25 unless otherwise posted. and theyre talking about making it 20. must make southie parking easy. good question on perpendicular parking ... wonder what the real law is? couldnt find it at first google.

other than Interstate highways and expressways, so why shouldn't this be allowed too? It is faster than a bicycle.

The smart is also short enough to park sideways, but Boston's laws specifically require wheels to be parallel to the curb, so it's sadly not technically legal to park this way.
