Walsh vetoes landmark status for Citgo Sign, but signs agreement that will keep the beacon up for at least 30 years

The Boston Business Journal reports on a deal between Walsh, Boston University, which owns the building the giant red triangular flasher sits on and Related Beal, which has a deal with BU to knock down much of the block and put up new office space.

If only the people so concerned about presrtving
a cheesy advertising sign would put the same effort into preserving the period buildings that are around it.
It's a suburbanite thing.
the majority of the people that care about that silly sign are suburbanite sportsball fans.
take that crap down and put up something that represents Boston.

about the sign getting landmark status, the lead here is another shining example of developers having Marty in their pocket.
Somehow we've gone from "Build nothing" to...
"Build anything you want."
I'm pretty sure neither one is good for our fair city.

No doubt looking to ear-mark a city structure to memorialize himself a la Ray Flynn Bridge... Citgo shall outlast them both!

Meanwhile, the guy who served between Flynn and Walsh had, off the top of my head, a wing of a library, a community center, and a wing of the hospital he gave to Boston University named after him, all while he was in office.
Flynn got a part of the Marine Industrial Park named after him, 20 years after leaving office.
Fair enough
Each side gave a little bit and in the end we get something that is good for everyone. I know this is unfamiliar these days - compromise that is - but it's how things are SUPPOSED to work.

How about a contest for artists to submit even better neon designs including local art schools? Compare the current design and possibilities for an even better design!
