Police save man from car taking on water in the Muddy River

Boston Police report a man drove his car into the Muddy River at Charlesgate West early Tuesday evening, but that officers got into the river and got him out.
Officers observed the operator of the vehicle seated in the driver's seat sitting up to his chest in the water. The driver's window was open and the vehicle appeared to be taking on more water. An officer entered the extremely cold water without regard for his own safety and pulled the operator out of the driver's seat and out of the water. The victim was pulled up the bank where he was treated by Boston EMS.

Such a weird decision anyways
oh look, here's a river - let's build a road interchange over it! Seems like the whole works should have just been located a 50 yards further to the west. I'm sure some building owner blocked that at the time though.

They built a highway right through the middle of the city (and many other cities), and you're surprised that they didn't reroute this road to avoid the river??
I think you've got the answer
Building next to the river would have entailed land acquisition costs, whereas the river was already public land.
Also, the bridge over the railroad tracks was already there, making the extension that way easier.

The car was facing the other direction (toward Beacon St), per eyewitness account
Not to mention that the depth of the Muddy River is about 2 ft.
Or at least, this chart says that's the depth of the infamous Muddy River Delta just across Storrow.

In a weird coincidence I
In a weird coincidence I walked by the Muddy River on Commonwealth Avenue early Tuesday night an noticed that not only were there no guard rails blocking the River under the Charlesgate Overpass, the area is paved and sort of looks like a parking lot or Road.

Must be why I saw two TV trucks parked on the grass under the overpass.
