Waterfront club ordered shut for two nights after manager refused to do anything about patron's sexual attack on server
The Boston Licensing Board yesterday ordered the Grand, 25 Northern Ave., to close for two nights because of an incident last fall in which a manager let a table of men finish their drinks even after their server told him one of the men had grabbed her and inserted his finger in her.
The club can choose when to serve the punishment, but the closure has to be on a Friday and a Saturday - typically a club's busiest nights. The club can also appeal the suspension to the state Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission.
At a hearing on Tuesday, a lawyer for Big Night Entertainment Group, which owns the Grand, said the manager was fired and all other managers and workers retrained to ensure something like this never happens again.

Wow
Two whole nights.
I can't imagine how that server feels about going to work there. I mean, apart from wanting to set the entire place on fire.
Ironically, if the server
Ironically, if the server still works there, then she (and everyone else that works there) will now essentially be docked a weeks pay due to the place closing for a weekend.
What a Jerk
I would have dumped the drink on his head !
excellent idea
Whenever the City is found to have mishandled harassment and discrimination, it should also give itself a two day timeout.
Key Question
Is the manager facing charges of obstruction or accessory to rape?
The club picks the weekend?
The club picks the weekend? Like the way all criminals do?
really now
two days for covering up a sexual assault on an employee?
Sometimes the licensing board needs to get a clue.
What cover up? The manager
What cover up? The manager was fired by the owner. It's hard to see what the owner (who's the one being penalized) did wrong in this case.
I think
I think 2 days is not enough. That manager should have not done that and training and policies come from the top down, the owner included. Owners of places do not get a 'ignorance' pass. You know and train your employees, you should know what they are up to.
Half true
I guarantee you every large bar owner in this town, quizzed on the names of every member of their doortstaff, would go maybe 3/10 at best. They work while owners hide in their suburb.
Looking at its website, looks
Looking at its website, looks like one big sexist ball of shit. I love how one of their advertising captions on their website says, "The Grand isn't for everyone....." . LMFAO. Yeah, no shit!
How
Is that sexist? Are women being forced to visit this club?
I sure as hell hope not!
I sure as hell hope not!
It doesn't have to be forced
It doesn't have to be forced to be sexist.
You should have scrolled to the bottom
where they were called a Top Place to Work six years in a row, by none other than the sexual harassment cover-up paper of record, The Boston Globe.
Penalties
I don't feel the owner's of the club should be penalized in this manner. It was assault, and that specific manager was trying to cover it up. He technically was an accomplice to the crime and he should be the one going before a judge for criminal behavior.
Instead of having the club close for two nights which hurts all the employees, including the young lady who was assaulted and still works there, they should be forced to take their earnings from those two nights and donate to an abused woman's shelter, or some sort of charity that works with victims.
The licensing board is so backwards sometimes it is infuriating.
Better yet
How about they get shut down for longer than two days, and have to pay all their employees while they're shut down, and have to make a case for why they should be allowed to continue to operate?
How about
Giving the proceeds to the actual victim?
Did you really just use
"Forced" and "charity" in the same sentence?
How did this happen?
If I was that manager...
Why are so many egotistic slime?
Always back your hot wait staff like a
The unfortunate nature of this business.
Asshole managers with prostitute-like servers.
What could possibly go wrong?
Everything.
Because you sell alcohol
Which a lot of people demand. And you have a license issued from a finite quantity of them to do so. I guess you have a veneer of invincibility. At least right up until your response to a guy (expletive) your employee is anything other than putting him through the door headfirst.
I'm impressed
that this was taken so seriously. We've had stuff like this happen at my work a zillion times (fitness sector), and once we submitted the reporting documents to the boss according to protocol, nothing was done and we were told not to call the police and also to shut up and go away.
Kudos to the licensing board for standing up for the employees, since apparently no one else does.
