Alleged restroom video taker will await trial at home

A clerk in US District Court in Boston yesterday released Eric Tran Thai to "home detention" as he awaits trial on five counts of sexual exploitation of children for the videos he allegedly took in Boston Latin School boys' rooms on at least ten occasions in 2017.

Under the order issued yesterday, Thai is allowed to leave home for work, religious services, medical appointments - including mental-health treatment ordered by the probation department - attorney meetings and family visits. He was ordered to stay away from Boston Latin School in particular and other places in general where minors might congregate, including parks, playgrounds, libraries and fast-food restaurants.

Thai was also ordered to keep his hands off any video cameras - and to notify probation officers should he come into possession of other devices that are not primarily meant as video cameras, but which can shoot video, such as smartphones.

His federal charges come after he was charged in Middlesex Superior Court in January on one count of photographing an unsuspecting nude person for two incidents in February, 2018 in men's rooms at Boston College.

In that case, a Middlesex Superior Court judge released Thai on personal recognizance at his arraignment, according to the Middlesex County District Attorney's office. The judge also ordered him to turn over his passport and to stay away from BC.

Officials said yesterday that investigators are continuing to comb through the "26 computer hard drives, 20 thumb drives, 27 covert and regular cameras, 14 computers, iPads, and cell phones, and multiple SD and Sim cards," they say they found at Thai's Dorchester home. In addition to the Boston Latin and BC incidents, he is also a suspect in similar incidents at a variety of colleges and public places in the Boston area and abroad.

All of the media reports, including this one, are not reporting the whole story, perhaps because it is so lurid. Almost all the boys referred to as underage victims in the FBI agents report (link provided in Uhub's original report) were masturbating.

So boys were masturbating in a school bathroom, as boys have been known to do, and the alleged perp was taping them. And to make things worse, the pictures of the boys were shared with parents in order to identify them. The alleged perp is also charged with "enticing", so it appears we have the masturbating boys "performing" for the camera?

Lurid doesn't begin to describe all of this

How do you know the lurid details???

First but certainly not foremost, I didn't know boys masturbating in the school bathroom was a common occurrence. But more importantly what kind of sicko gets off on something like that? Lurid and disgusting.

How are those "facts" about whats on the video going to help the kids who were victimized? They've got enough on their plates already so to spread these "lurid" deets will only add to the shame (even though they did nothing wrong). Were you sharing b/c this was somehow important for the public to know or some other reason?

It is unsubstantiated, *and* anonymous, *and* irrelevant to the case. His alleged crime would be just as illegal if the room were continuously empty during the time his camera was operating.

All the details are available in a public report. It was attached to the first blog on this topic.

This smacks of rumor and being fake. I think it's doing more harm than good.

It's right there in the indictment which I read because it was linked on UHub. That said, I wish the previous poster had used a little discretion. These are children we're talking about and this whole situation is horrific.

There's nothing "lurid" about the detail of parents confirming that their children were victims of these alleged crimes after viewing evidence collected in this case.

Wanna know what's "lurid"? In another UHub story in which an adult is alleged to have behaved in a lewd, sexually inappropriate manner towards minors...there were so many comments about the suspect exposing himself to "women" when the Transit Police report detailed that the (alleged) victims targeted were teenage girls.

From January 2019 through March 6, 2019 Transit Police detectives were actively investigating reports of an adult male committing lewd acts directed at teenage females on MBTA buses and subway stations in the Dorchester area.

Wanna know what else is "lurid?" The creepy curiosity "for the details" of Olivia Ambrose's alleged rape and similar comments:

At least I'm fitting into my skinny jeans better because reading many of these UHub comments are downright vomit-inducing.

What I'm not going to do is discuss these "performances" of alleged child pornography and the sexual exploitation of school children. You are on your own with that one.

What I am going to do is again emphasize that these were minors who are alleged to have been victimized and exploited by the suspect's actions.

not just Boston College, but also MIT, BU, Northeastern, Bunker Hill, etc ?

The suspect is facing federal charges. When this case is tried and all the evidence is presented at trial, it would not be surprising if he was added to a Sex Offender Registry and ordered to stay away from these schools and pretty much any college campus, among other restrictions. Maybe he will take a guilty plea?

Also wonder if any state charges will follow the trial on federal charges. Especially with Bunker Hill being a state school.

is he an employee ?

I wondered that.

But, at least when I had reason to go into BLS (up until, oh, three years or so ago, which covers the time this guy was charged with being in the boys' rooms), it used to be fairly easy to get in after school hours, when there'd typically still be a lot of kids there doing, well, after-school stuff.

The main door would almost always be open the times I'd go there after hours to pick my daughter up from some after-school thing, and the times it wasn't, I'd just wait until some kid came out and go in.

Folks are saying they don’t want any Trans in the boys bathroom, right?

Until you brought it up. Let's keep it that way.

Assuming your comment was attempt to make a pun of the suspect's name...nah.

No need to resort to thinly-veiled racism to express your views on this case.
