West Roxbury man gets life for shooting his father to death

Mark Regan, 38, was sentenced today to life in prison for murdering his father, also named Mark Regan, in their Perham Street home on March 14, 2014, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.
Because a Suffolk Superior Court jury found Regan guilty of second-degree murder, he would be eligible for parole after 15 years. If he were paroled, he would have to serve two years in jail for unlawful possession of a firearm, the DA's office says.
Prosecutors say the younger Regan fired several shots while his father lay in bed. Police found the son hiding in the attic after somebody called police to request they check on the father.

Premeditated cold blood murder?
Why isn't serving life without parole?
Because
The jury found him guilty of second-degree murder, which allows the possibility of parole.
Why would a son kill his father?
This case is so weird. There's next to nothing online about it. In fact the 2014 uHub report below is about the only meaningful thing I could find.

Hiding in the attic
Probably some sort of mental illness. And unmitigated anger at parents is an age old problem. Sad, but not exactly uncommon though.
