If a driver can plow into a parked car and push it up on the sidewalk, it doesn't sound as if bike lanes would rectify the situation at all.

No, bike lanes in and of themselves don’t make roads safer. Narrowing the road makes everything safer. That intersection is dangerously wide. People accelerate through it like it’s a highway ramp. There’s no need for it. Tighten the travel lanes up, mark them well, and you get a safer intersection for driving, walking, biking, whatever.

More traffic congestion with narrow road. The complaints would never end.

It looks like the white car was going up South St. towards Centre, where the road is pretty narrow, not part of the intersection.

Yea, the road itself, but the right turn from Centre onto South needs to be narrowed badly. It’s effectively a highway ramp people accelerate onto South street with. Makes crossing there hairy. But, yea this happened on the other side going towards Centre. Calming overall will help. And it won’t add to congestion. It’ll limit the race car driving from one light to the next.

and have never had a problem. This happened on South St. which is one lane each way. No matter what they do to make roads safer, there are always going to be accidents. Perhaps the driver had a medical emergency? Or was on a cell phone?

or sun glare and couldn't see the parked vehicle.

It’s news because it’s needless danger on a neighborhood street caused by an unsafe design. Easily correctable. It was fortunate timing nobody was on the sidewalk when the car was sent up there.

South St. is one lane each way. Doesn't get much safer than that. Sounds more like and unsafe driver.

As someone else already pointed out, the "one lane" road is extremely wide. This is typical throughout the Boston area where streets haven't been re-engineered since the 60s. Some douchebag was probably trying to pass someone on the right.

Driving along, hitting a parked car, and pushing it up on the sidewalk? Seriously, how stupid can one get?

My parked car got hit by a moving truck driven by a college kid, hard enough to drive it into the car in front of it, and it would have driven them both up on the sidewalk, but the curb stopped them and so all four right-side wheels were destroyed (along with a lot of other stuff). Moving mass...

Nothing smaller than an Expedition is an SUV. These are just regular cars in an SUV wannabe shape. There wasn't even a rollover here.

I saw someone do the same thing on the arborway. Car was parked. No traffic. They were texting and really damaged the other car while the poor other car owner was walking in the arboretum. It was the most stupid thing I ever witnessed and thankfully no one was hurt.
