Pair of Mass. residents charged as SIM swapping, social hacking cryptothieves

Was going to write up an indictment of a pair of Bay Staters for allegedly doing various bad things with crytptocurrency, social hacking and Twitter accounts.

But the Register did a good job explaining what they're charged with and we here at the UHub Technology Desk were impressed with their use of "Massholes" in the headline, not because it's original or anything, but because they're British (they've got a section of their site devoted to "data centres"), and it's kind of impressive they'd know the term, so we've linked to them instead.

Just think what they could have done with all that talent if they took the legal route. Perhaps they could have been in custody accountanting at State Street.

Or rather the talent was as actors with lots of time on their hands. Nothing about this is technically hard or uncommon knowledge. A lot of the fault lies with the fact companies make it easy to reset accounts if you have a phone number or email address on file with them.

BTW, these guys aren't Massholes. They are thieves and thugs. A Masshole is just your typical asshole who happens to reside in Massachusetts.

Amazingly simple, and the success rate seemed pretty good (at least for a while). But what caused them to take a hard right into the ditch and threaten murder and why aren't they charged with extortion or some such? (or did I miss something?)
