Marty Walsh and the CEO and board of Tufts Medical Center will eat lunch at Jade Garden on Tyler Street today and then stroll around the neighborhood to show it's a fine place to go and to send a message to cut the crap about COVID-19 already, that you're no more likely to contract the virus in Chinatown than anywhere else in Massachusetts, which is to say hardly likely at all.
Their repast comes after city councilors from Boston and Quincy ate dim sum at China Pearl on Saturday.
Tom Menino went on a similar Chinatown walkaround during the SARS outbreak in 2003.

I'd say almost half the people I saw were wearing surgical masks, most live or work there I'm sure, so he can try to dismiss their concerns but I think they will continue to wear the masks regardless of where he eats.

To be honest, I do not think I have ever seen a non Asian person wearing a facemask like that outside of a hospital setting ever during any of these major hysteria's. Maybe I am looking in all the wrong places but that has been my experience.
Not saying that people are not avoiding these zones but it does not help when you show up and everyone is behind those masks.

I go through Chinatown almost 7 days out of 7, and the idea that "half" the people there are wearing masks is simply false. I also ate in Chinatown on Saturday, and approximately zero of the people in the restaurant had masks on. I also use the Chinatown stop on the Orange Line several days out of the week, and have seen maybe 2 or 3 people with masks on at the stop.
So I'm lying?

The problem with this approach is that you are looking at places where people choose to go. Anyone who is in enough of a panic to wear a mask is not eating in a restaurant!
If you want an accurate count go to places where people HAVE to go.

Anecdata - I've been in Logan and two other large European airports in the past two weeks, twice each and saw only a handful of people wearing masks.

H Marts around town, and I do see a lot of the staffers (though not all of them) wearing masks.
I don't know if that makes Asian and Asian ex-pat customers more comfortable or not, but I wish they wouldn't do that. It's based on quackery that doesn't help quell the hysteria.

There is the custom in many Asian countries to wear masks when one is sick or when one thinks they will be around others who are sick. It's a nice gesture to discomfort yourself in order to prevent a stranger from being infected when you are ill.
I speak as someone who works with people from China on a daily basis.
It was unsettling when I first saw it years ago but I quickly became accustomed. The practice has media focus now with COVID-19 but it's hardly new.

Walsh and his team have been working with Chinatown Main Streets and businesses for the past few weeks on this and assisting them with what they need. They just don't make a big social media show of everything like Wu does. The people in the community know who is actually doing the real work. Get off Twitter and talk to real people there.
