Mayor to eat lunch in Chinatown today
By adamg on Tue, 02/18/2020 - 10:00am
Marty Walsh and the CEO and board of Tufts Medical Center will eat lunch at Jade Garden on Tyler Street today and then stroll around the neighborhood to show it's a fine place to go and to send a message to cut the crap about COVID-19 already, that you're no more likely to contract the virus in Chinatown than anywhere else in Massachusetts, which is to say hardly likely at all.
Their repast comes after city councilors from Boston and Quincy ate dim sum at China Pearl on Saturday.
Tom Menino went on a similar Chinatown walkaround during the SARS outbreak in 2003.

I wonder if he will take the T
Or even walk from the State House.
Nah. Big black SUV will be double parked illegally in Chinatown.
The mayor’s office is in City
The mayor’s office is in City Hall. Not the State House.
Would be a little weird for
Would be a little weird for the Mayor to be walking from the State House since that's where state government conducts business. The mayor is over at City Hall...
I think it's great for elected city officials to show support for the community and prevent any mass ridiculous hysteria.
This was not a post about how the mayor chooses to get himself to the restaurant.
Good for the Mayor in doing
Good for the Mayor in doing this.
Went on Saturday
and Chinatown was packed...
Politicians must just love this kind of stuff
"You mean I can just go out for lunch and walk around and it will be a big photo op? I just have to support the opinion that it's ok to eat at a delicious restaurant and that's a big deal now? Fantastic, where do I sign up?"
And if people
didn't act like morons, these kinds of photo ops would be unnecessary.
I was in Chinatown Sunday
I'd say almost half the people I saw were wearing surgical masks, most live or work there I'm sure, so he can try to dismiss their concerns but I think they will continue to wear the masks regardless of where he eats.
To be honest, I do not think
To be honest, I do not think I have ever seen a non Asian person wearing a facemask like that outside of a hospital setting ever during any of these major hysteria's. Maybe I am looking in all the wrong places but that has been my experience.
Not saying that people are not avoiding these zones but it does not help when you show up and everyone is behind those masks.
Umm...
I go through Chinatown almost 7 days out of 7, and the idea that "half" the people there are wearing masks is simply false. I also ate in Chinatown on Saturday, and approximately zero of the people in the restaurant had masks on. I also use the Chinatown stop on the Orange Line several days out of the week, and have seen maybe 2 or 3 people with masks on at the stop.
So I'm lying?
OK, If you say so.
I couldn't tell you
if you're deliberately saying something false or not, but I'll meet you in Chinatown at 4:30 PM today and we can count together. Deal?
The problem with this
The problem with this approach is that you are looking at places where people choose to go. Anyone who is in enough of a panic to wear a mask is not eating in a restaurant!
If you want an accurate count go to places where people HAVE to go.
Still not a thing
Anecdata - I've been in Logan and two other large European airports in the past two weeks, twice each and saw only a handful of people wearing masks.
Wash your hands and never go on a cruise ship - you'll be fine!
Approximately zero of the
Approximately zero of the people in the restaurant had masks on??? What does that mean? Approximately zero?
Possibly...
...that they didn't scrutinize every single person in the place and can't swear that someone wearing a mask wasn't seated behind the potted plant.
Correct.
n/t
Is there anyone saying not to
Is there anyone saying not to go to chinatown? or saying not to buy anything there?
Maybe Im not paying attention but where are these people saying shit?
Ah, looks like we've found somebody ...
Who doesn't follow anybody on Twitter or Facebook. For a, um, taste, look at the replies to this tweet.
Life is great
When you stay off Facebook and Twitter. Although it's probably still the best place to find Trolls now that ToyRus closed.
I looked at the tweet
And there wasn't one comment stating people shouldn't go to Chinatown.
You're not paying attention.
Business in Chinatown has dropped off significantly, whether anybody has said anything to you personally or not. WBUR had a story on this last week.
I frequently shop at C-Mart
I work nearby. Was there yesterday early evening. I've noticed considerably fewer customers over the pass few weeks. And most of the cashier's wear masks.
I shop that C Mart, and Ming's / NY Mart(s), and a couple of the
H Marts around town, and I do see a lot of the staffers (though not all of them) wearing masks.
I don't know if that makes Asian and Asian ex-pat customers more comfortable or not, but I wish they wouldn't do that. It's based on quackery that doesn't help quell the hysteria.
Nothing new
There is the custom in many Asian countries to wear masks when one is sick or when one thinks they will be around others who are sick. It's a nice gesture to discomfort yourself in order to prevent a stranger from being infected when you are ill.
I speak as someone who works with people from China on a daily basis.
It was unsettling when I first saw it years ago but I quickly became accustomed. The practice has media focus now with COVID-19 but it's hardly new.
DING HO - Best Deal in Town
SAVE MONEY - EAT AT DING HO!
I have to admit, while it's not my style of Chinese food,
the prices are tough to beat.
Trying to keep up
Another day, another chance for the mayor to tag along on Michelle Wu's advocacy. She brought a huge group of folks to dim sum brunch over the weekend and talked very candidly about the challenges facing restauranteurs in what should be their busiest season.
Walsh and his team have been
Walsh and his team have been working with Chinatown Main Streets and businesses for the past few weeks on this and assisting them with what they need. They just don't make a big social media show of everything like Wu does. The people in the community know who is actually doing the real work. Get off Twitter and talk to real people there.
YOU CANT CUT TRANSIT SPENDING!! YOULL REGRET THIS!!
I just wanted to appreciate how much this headline sounds like a SimCity headline and i'm extremely here for it.
Come eat with me
I'm bringing people together for small, family-style meals in Chinatown. Thursday's at China King has one seat left as of this time. If you're interested in future ones, follow me on Twitter (@JCCraves) or my Boston Chinatown Tours FB page .
