State shuts parking lots and spaces at beaches in South Boston, Dorchester, East Boston and Quincy to try to keep people away

Starting tomorrow, DCR is closing the parking areas and spaces along the water from Constitution Beach in East Boston to Castle Island and down to Wollaston Beach because too many people were showing up at the beaches and not spacing themselves out enough.

Affected areas:

Dorchester: Malibu Beach, Tenean Beach off Conley Street and Savin Hill Beach off Denny Street.

East Boston: Constitution Bech, Barnes Avenue, Porazzo Ice Rink parking area.

South Boston: Carson Beach, M Street Beach, Pleasure Bay, Castle Island and Day Boulevard (on the ocean side of the street from Columbia Road to Farragut Road and all parking from Farragut to Shore Road). The parking lots at the McCormack Bathhouse, the World War II area and Murphy Rink are also shut.

Quincy: Wollaston Beach.

Sullivan's at Castle Island had announced yesterday it was closing for at least April.

State closes Nantasket Beach in Hull, opens 5 seasonal parks early (Patriot Ledger)

Adam's list appears to be limited to DCR beaches in the cities of Boston and Quincy, but Baker's order goes beyond there.

I’m curious— Boston has the DCR, but who would it take to close all the beaches? Towns like Gloucester or Scituate or Plymouth? The state? And isn’t the Cape Cod National Seashore part of the National Park system, so not even under the jurisdiction of localities like Truro or Provincetown or the state? I’m wondering because I think a blanket closure might need to be considered. Boston can close but what prevents anyone from hopping in their car and heading for the North or South Shore? And there is also the warm weather migration which will begin next month as people return to their seasonal homes from places like Florida and the populations of many seaside communities boom.

... that has closed its beaches is Manchester-by-the-Sea. Gloucester’s beaches are all open, same as Boston. It’s the parking lots that are closed.
Gloucester’s chief of police has encouraged everyone there to get out and get fresh air and exercise.
It makes some sense to close parking lots. None to close parks and beaches.

This is the full list, which Adam might want to link to. It includes beaches in Hull, Lynn, Nahant, Revere, Winthrop, Newburyport, Salisbury, Westport, Sagamore, and Mashpee.

Covers more than Boston. They have property all over the state.

Duxbury has closed both parking lot and beach as of yesterday while Marshfield selectmen just voted this afternoon to close parking lots at noon tomorrow but keep the beaches open for now

Pure Shite. I go there most days to eat my lunch and look at the water (never Get out of the car). There’s never more that 5 cars there. Nobody is sunbathing, I see maybe 2 or 3 people MAX Walking dogs over 10 feet apart. Chuck B is grossly misinformed on this one. Kind of like how he keeps kicking the “peak time” can down the road. Typical.

These parking lots should be permanently closed. Maybe the DCR could rip up the asphalt. It would make the beaches cleaner and safer. And think of all the pollution eliminated from all those pesky cars.
