Lunacy or brilliance? In midst of pandemic, Popeyes opens new outlet in West Roxbury

New Popeyes now open in West Roxbury

Popeyes opened its newest fried-chicken place this weekend, on VFW Parkway northbound in West Roxbury, between the McDonald's and the Burger King.

Takeout only, of course.

MMMMpapis, who alerted us to its opening, commented early this afternoon:

And there's a line right now for take out. Crazy times with other small businesses forced to close and losing thousands but someone else can open up a franchise in the middle of this pandemic and still make bank.

It's just up the road from the Chick-fil-A in Dedham, which was, of course, closed today. The location used to be home to the failed Bagelville - the skeleton of whose sign still stands. Before Bagelville, the site was home to a failed Dunkin' Donuts and before that, a failed Arby's.

How does that even happen? The only time I ever knew a DD to close, it was because a wall of the building started to shed bricks on the adjoining side street.

I've seen the end of the universe, and it happens to be in the United States and, oddly enough, it's in Houston, Texas. I know - I was shocked, too. Imagine my surprise when I left a comedy club one day and walked to the end of the block, and there on one corner was a Starbucks, and across the street from that Starbucks, in the exact same building as that Starbucks, there was - a Starbucks. I looked back and forth, thinking the sun was playing tricks with my eyes. That there was a Starbucks across from a Starbucks - and that, my friends, is the end of the universe.

doing a round-up of fried chicken places for Boston Magazine back on 2007 -- RIP, Poppa B's and Pat "Packy" Connors Tavern, two of my favorites from that piece -- and had to slag the Kenmore Square Popeyes outlet for it terribleness: dirty after only being open a few months, and its fried chicken sat in huge mounds under heat lamps, no way to treat a bird.

I like Popeyes as fast-food outlets go (haven't had the famous chicken sandwich yet), but that one was grim.

On Sunday the line of cars for Popeye's was back PAST the entrance to McDonald's. People had to social distance their cars to keep the Mickie D's entrance open.

When I went to Ocean State Joblot on a tp quest, the line for Chic-fil-a was super long. Popeye's was less long for better all around better chicken sandwiches.

Lum's was never at this spot. Lums was further up by the Long John Silver/Taco Bell next to Uhaul. It is hard to call it a failed Arby's as it was in business there for 40 years. The franchise ended at the location.
